Well according to Slashdot Everything Microsoft does is evil..NET isn't an evil business strategy, it is actually a good platform. However Microsoft just Messed it up by leveraging the disadvantages of the two idea. Microsoft Platform Only and Slower Operating speeds do to virtual machine..NET could have been huge if they made their VM and kept it up to date for Linux, Mac, and Unix systems. But because it only works on one platform Microsoft didn't attract any new developers just developers who needed an upgrade from Visual Studio 6. or Microsoft could make it a clean compile language with no VM and have all the robust library set and structure and have it run a full compile speeds. So MS Word, Excel and other applications could run native off the platform and developers who need higher performance systems have available tools.
Why Microsoft was eviler then Apple. is that.NET was crippled to keep sales of Windows OS's vs. Apple who's goal was to sell its main product and not cripple it to to say keep Mac Sales up (The did that for a little bit with the original iPod but quickly allowed windows to use it too)
In any movement there needs to be a degree of professionalism to the movement. The problem with a lot of these modern movements is the vilification of their opponents, because doing it this way is the easiest way to get a quick (large) group or radicals together. But in the grand scheme of things it does little to solve the problem because the moderates thou opponents are feeling personally attacked by the group.
The idea of "I don't believe in what you are saying, but I will fight for the right for you to say it" concept is going away. They take opposing view then vilify the opposition. Eg. OWS: A bunch of Lazy Bums who are whining because their liberal art degrees wont give them a good job. Tea Party: A bunch of racist Red Neck Hicks who controlled by those big oil corporations. In really both groups are actually more diverse and complicated then the other side wants to admit. But they disagree with their message so they will do anything possible to make them seem like one sided idiots.
No experience has shown me that people without degrees make those mistakes even after having a lot of experience. The degree program does what experice wont do... Tell students that they are wrong. Professional won't tell people they are wrong they may fire him or not promote him, but not give him a failing grade for doing it wrong.
When you are self taught you often teach yourself to do it wrong, and make the wrong assumptions while you are learning.
Here are some self taught developers misconceptions that are common, that are cured by a few years of computer science. 1. Less lines of code the faster the program will run. This is false some algorithms that take more lines of code actually improve speed. While there may be more code the logic allows for less looping of data.
2. Language x is the ultimate langue, if I can code in this then I am truly a great programmer. I have seen some VB Developers who can Kick the butt of some C developers, they understand the OS Better and know when to take a shortcut and when to go and redo what seems easily available. And their programs operates faster then the C counterpart.
3. If I Jump to the last chapter in the book/manual and understand the programs then I am a master. The last chapter stuff are often the stuff that is more of the exception to the rules. The stuff in the beginning is usually your bread and butter things you need to know. You are not impressing anyone with the advanced low level system calls when you could have done it much easier.
4. I am an top programmer although there are areas that seem impossible, where I must need a third party library. I am not dissing third party libraries, but you should know when to use them and when not too. Most people with a BS Degree in computer science should have the skills to research and make those third party libraries, but they know that doing so will waste more them then they need, and other cases what some of the libraries are they are better off making it themselves then trying to figure out how to implement the library. For the average computer scientist there isn't too many areas that are not out of their ability, it just may not be in their focus.
So is your analogy. You and your sister have the same family name so when you too are compared together by name the assumption will be that you are part of the same family. Where the same family values and traditions are shared.
Computer Hardware has the rules and logic built straight into the equipment. In theory you can make any programming language when compiled except for creating opt code it can create a circuit diagram that can be made into a chip. Once it is created it cannot be changed, without replacing the part.
Computer Firmware has the rules and logic built into a flash chip, that simulates hardware. It is not quite hardware because it can be reflashed, it isn't quite software because it is required for operations of the device.
Computer Software has the rules and logic saved in a method that is changeable and movable. Unlike Firmware or Hardware this can be changed while keeping the device functional and its job is to use the hardware and firmware in different methods.
But Hardware Firmware and Software are all methods of storing Rules and Logic. The creative process in making all three is about the same so legally they should be treated equally.
As for Patents I am under the impression that too many of them are getting passed because they are obvious where someone would come up with the same solution when faced with same problem.
However there are some (Some that are easy to code after you see it, and some that may be a major project) that are really a unique approach to a problem that wouldn't happen otherwise, and the inventor should have rights to the idea. Yes freedom for the developer to choose how he wants to use his invention is against the Open Source Software agenda, however I think you should reward inventors and innovators.
That is the problem with a lot of companies who are first to market. They are ahead of their time and they feel comfortable in that fact so they don't do much to keep innovating, then when time catches up they are stuck with an old technology. What makes it worse, when they do that they have a huge customer base who is resistant to change as they learned the old technology. So any attempts to make improvements will meet with resistance from its user base.
Compared with Apples method. Enter the market Midway take all the lessons learned and mistakes that their competitors made, create a new product using newer technology and market the hell out of it, to make it seem like they invented it first. Forcing all the other adopters to play catch up with them.
I don't want to see Unions go Away. I want to see them redesigned to actually work well in the modern economy. I am sick of Union men telling me about the how much unions helped us a hundred years ago. Old news. Some thing have changed. 1. Now longer a 1 factory town. Back in the old days you had 1 or 2 factories that were a major hiring force. The employee never traveled much (some didn't have cars, other just didn't think about traveling so far) So where they lived and set their roots they had few choices for work. Getting canned or injured means you will be poor for the rest of your life, as replacement jobs are hard to find, and you got a bad name for getting canned.
2. Improvement in technology. Unfortunately those easy to do jobs have been replaced by technology. We no longer need Elevator operators, or Print Type setters like we did before.
So what Union is funding this research with the money taken out of each full time worker, to do this research that we already know.
You will find mixed messages against Contractors from unions. If they are communicating to the general public, their argument is that contractors are too expensive and their tax money is wasted on them. If they are communicating with the union employees they state that they are a threat because business can hire them for less to do the jobs. The real contention is the fact that contractors are not Union Employees thus not paying them dues.
The real costs and values. Contractors are valuable when there are projects that need a particular skill set and need either part time work or is a limited time line for a project.
Contractors are expensive when you have them working 9-5 Mon-Fri year around for projects that do not have an end to them.
Contractors are valuable when you needs something done that is politically sensitive that none of the full time employees want to get their feet in it because failure could be disastrous to their career.
Contractors are expensive when they are not shown or allowed to do things too far outside your organizations standards where they build them self's a long term job.
Well Microsoft really kicked Netscape butt. But at the time Netscape wasn't about Open Web Standards, It was two sides trying to win their own priority web standards. A new browser would have came up with more force if Microsoft killed the Linux ports of the browsers. Probably Konquer (that both Google Chrome and Apple Safari is based off of) would have became more used then Mozilla and got a big community support to make it on par and better then IE, just because the Linux users needed a web browser.
Proven iOS alternative = Consistently not getting consumer demand
WebOS seems to me to be the BeOS of the 21st century. Techs seem to really like it however never fails to reach critical mass.
