Ahh. Ok, I see then. Still, you can share your tunes on your "local" network, which is nearly as easy as sharing with the world as using an open wireless router or public WiFi. It is fun perusing other people's iTunes list when I travel too. In most hotels I can usually get 2 or 3 people's lists. I didn't realize the sharing function, at one point, let you share across a wider network however. I can't believe they even let that happen at all, let alone for a "brief" time. I'm not sure anyone could rightfully hate Apple for changing this though.

Here's a warning to anyone interested in Parallels and/or bootcamp.

I had a Bootcamp partition with a perfectly working version of XP pro that I used for about three or four months. Rebooting is fast. Rebooting into OS X takes about 15 seconds, and booting into XP is pretty quick (in spite of XP) taking about a minute or so until you get a fully working desktop. So I downloaded the Parallels 15 day trial. Worked pretty well, but definitely isn't as snappy as Bootcamp, but barely noticable. Then the trial period ran out on Parallels. I didn't really want to buy it, because I liked the speed of Bootcamp better (and many games didn't work in Parallels at that time). So I rebooted into XP and get the error: Windows could not start because of an error in the software - load needed DLLs for kernel. It seems that the Parlallels demo disabled something needed to boot up XP once the demo runs out.

So I ran out to the Apple Store and bought a fresh copy of Parallels 3.0 and it didn't undo whatever the demo did. Now I'm stuck, because my XP disks are in the UK and my household goods won't be here until December. I guess I have to call Parallel's tech support (because the Apple 'Genius' didn't want to take a stab at it, even though all I was asking is if others have had this problem). I hate tech support. Anyone have this problem? Is there a windows bootup key that I can hold down to get more options?

In anycase, I've used Parallels 3.0 on other machines, and their gaming support is still "optomistic" at best. Bootcamp, on the other hand, works great for games. Warcraft runs with the same FPS in Windows mode as it does in Mac mode, for example. for the record: 20" Intel iMac (white), 2.33 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, ATI Radeon X1600 256MB video Thanks, and now I'll get back on topic.

Pointless? Avoiding 5 minutes of wasted time isn't pointless to me. I'm talking about when you select 3.2gbs of data and want to transfer it to a storage target that only has 3.0gbs of data available. Windows doesn't bother to check. Instead it just starts with the little flying papers bit, then about 5 minutes later, decides to tell you there isn't enough space. Mac OS (or fill in your OS of choice) on the other hand, doesn't waste your time, and tells you there isn't enough space BEFORE it even starts to copy files. Hardly pointless!

Is this somehow related to the stupid inability of pretty much every Windows version ever to NOT start copying files until it can assure there is enough room on the target disk? I've lost track of how many times something has started copying, gone for a few minutes, then just stopped because 75% of the way in Windows realized there wasn't enough disk space to finish.

You are mistaken if you think the price of a PC doesn't include the Windows OS that comes with it. Even if you build your own, you still have to buy a full version of Windows to put on there. I guess you are alluding to building your own PC and putting free Linux on it? That is an option, I guess.

For the record, Mac users don't "have to upgrade an average of every 18 months" either. My G4 tower, for example, runs X.3. I don't even remember how long ago that was, and I hardly miss any of the newer features in the latest versions when I use the old Mac (spotlight being the exception).

Yeah, but they are competing against a company with 25+ years of profits (Apple) and a company that set the standard for digital music downloads (Apple). They are going to have to offer something DRASTICALLY different or better to make a dent. Getting rid of all DRM is a start, but I highly doubt that Amazon has enough clout to pull off what Apple hasn't totally been able to yet.

Well the middle man exists for a reason. For example, I'm a consultant and design Interactive Multimedia Instruction for my company. Other big companies hire my company to provide IMI development, because it is cheaper in the short run to hire an outside party who are experts at IMI. The contract I'm on now pays a whopping $88/hr, but that is far cheaper than it would be for our client to start up their own IMI computer based training division. Same thing goes here. Apple is operating at a loss to host the iTunes library (and only makes money because of the iPod, so they say). How much money would the labels be willing to eat, so as not to have to pay Apple to host their massive database for them? Are the labels going to start selling mp3 players to make back the money they'd be losing?

The reason Amazon gives on their website is:

"Amazon MP3 does not yet offer the complete Dixie Chicks catalog. Not all record labels have approved all of their music for sale as MP3s, but we're working to expand selection. "

Since these same labels haven't approved non-drm sales in the iTunes store either, what makes you think they will on the Amazon site? The same "matter of time" will never happen, given the current greedy culture of the labels.

Well, you are a bit more tech savvy than the average users, given you are on slashdot. I think a more realistic scenario will be people check Amazon out of interest, but the 10th time out of 11 they don't find what they are looking for, they just go back to iTunes, where they know they will find it 9 times out of 10. It is hard to argue against the seemless integration of, say, an iMac with iTunes and an iPod/iPhone, even if you can't stand the concept. The average person that walks into an Apple store for the first time is hard pressed not to be impressed with this model. In contrast (and for fun) go to a Sony store that tries to emulate the Apple Stores and ask them to demo the seemless integration of the Sony mp3 player, music store and Viaio (sp?) laptop. It really is funny to watch the poor salesperson struggle through it, in a schadenfreude kind of way.

I agree with you, but you must be new here. Slashdotters will tell you that ripping a CD causes irreparable file damage rendering the song unlistenable and DRM exists solely to lock consumers into having to buy iPods. I mean, nobody buys iPods because they are the best player on the market, they only buy them because they have to because of all their iTunes songs. And iTunes sucks so hard too, makes you wonder why people need iPods in the first place, since no true slashdotter would ever use such a debilitating business model like iTunes. Yeah, that's my take on it in my first full year of slashdotting, but I'm still here, so I must like the punishment.
