I can!!! Too many users assume that if you are a part of the IT Department you know everything there is to know about a computer (in my case I am the IT Department). All too often I am used as a "Help Desk" for software I never have used, is not part of my job to use, and will probably never use. It is assumed that because it is part of my job to maintain the network and its security that I am the see-all-know-all of my company. What most fail to realize is that there are different disciplines with-in the Technology field and to be well versed in a small handful of those disciplines does not predispose the "IT Guy" to have all of the answers. Titles were meant to reflect an accurate and short summary of exactly that person's responsibilities.
I definitely would've told the truth about checking Slashdot. I make no attempt to hide listening to podcasts from Buzz Out Loud, checking my rss reader for new stuff on/., arstechnica, or any of the many other websites that have nothing to do with anything immediate to my job. The point is it shows an interest in the field that you work in; to make a conscious effort to stay up-to-date on as many points of information as possible and shows the boss (prospective boss) initiative.
There are murderers out there, but not hordes of them just waiting to kill people... should we do away with life sentences and let them out on parole???
The politicians aren't as stupid as we think they are. They know that the offenders who intend to repeat their crimes will just get a new e-mail, so for what the proposed bill doesn't prevent, if (or more hopefully when) the repeat offender gets caught, there is yet more ammo for the Commonwealth to use to keep the offender behind bars longer. Failure to be in compliance with registration requirements is a major offense and a serious felony in Virginia. Sexual predators are serious criminals, and while I do agree that the Government does a little too much "Big Brothering" over us, failure to act could be seen as negligence by a few Americans and can cause more harm than good, ie... "If the Commonwealth was tougher on this offender, he would've never raped my 10 year old daughter!" You'll never hear someone say, "Awe, this guy would've raped someone no matter how great our justice system was." Oh yeah, and by the way, those offenders who do not repeat their crimes have nothing to worry about.

I overheard something interesting right before I hung up the phone with Dell the other day... "Thank you, call again"
