At this point, they can add support for any feature or format that they want and then they can start using that feature or format on youtube or piccasa or one of their other sites and basically strong arm other browsers to support that feature because google controls some of the most popular sites on the internet. I could see how this might turn into an issue especially if chrome takes a sufficiently large chunk of the browser market.

While I like this solution on the iPhone, where every bit of screen counts. I'm not sure that I would want this on my laptop or desktop.

I'm already a little annoyed with the way tabs work on chrome. I can easily open enough of them that I can't see an icon for each tab and only get the first letter of the name of the page, also there is no list of tabs anywhere. It makes navigation more difficult.

I also don't browse full screen most of the time, which is pretty much what chrome focuses on. Thus far I have not been very impressed with Googles UI development outside of web applications (where they seem to do at least a decent job) but hopefully with time they will start to consider other ways people might use their browser.

    That is unlikely.

First off, what the Australians (and South Americans) do would be properly called "grilling" here in the US. Sure, there are plenty of people here who think that throwing burgers on a grill is BBQ, but it really isn't. While there is a lot of debate over what is and is not "true" BBQ the type of cooking I am referring to always has one characteristic. The food is smoked, not grilled. BBQ in America is just not the same thing as it is in Australia.

As for the Australians inventing it, grilling meat over an open flame, or charcoal, is a really really old activity and most cultures have some variety of it. I'm not sure you could honestly trace it to a particular origin.

I can't speak to the number of people who would go bankrupt, but given how nasty things got in the housing market I think a lot of people are closer to being over their heads housing wise than I ever would have thought before and mostly its people in my tax bracket buying houses that are 2-3 times more expensive than the one I own.

So while 75% sounds crazy, it could easily be a lot higher than you might guess.

I do wonder how many people screw it up, but I get a thing in the mail every year from my bank and turbo tax asks for a particular box off that form. I would think that anyone capable of owning a home would be able to handle that... but, just like above I would probably be surprised just how many fuck it up

  16. Re:Simple solution on Can Computers Be Used To Optimize the US Tax Code? · · Score: 1

Generally speaking, the money I get back from my mortgage deduction gets rolled right back into my house every year and its usually not enough to cover all of the maintenance necessary to keep up the house.

The problem is not really the first home exemption especially at the 200K level, it encourages home ownership which tends to encourages people to be more active in their community. The thing is, you can get that same write off on a 2 million dollar home, and now we are taking 25K a year. You can also get that write off for your first vacation home ( maybe another 2 million dollar home ).

Personally I think that, rather than eliminating the deduction we should simply cap it at a maximum yearly write off for mortgage interest on all homes. We could cap it at, say 30K a year or something like that and it would benefit the people who are on the bubble for buying a home without rewarding people for buying insanely expensive homes.

    Bullshit!

BBQ, at least as it is prepared here, is most certainly an American invention. Much of the native South and North Eastern food is American, though admittedly influenced by different parts of Europe (but then, who isn't, there was a time when the Italians didn't have pasta). The western states have been developing and refining a cuisine all their own over the past decade or so.

As for Cheese, America produces world class cheddar cheese never mind some of the other varieties.

Sure, Americans might eat a lot of fast food but all you do is show your ignorance by claiming there is no "American food" that isn't crap.
