A wireless lan can be tapped by anyone with a radio and some electronics skills. The only way to secure it is with encryption. But of course, as we saw with ssh, even encrypted protocols arent totally secure. Wireless lans would probably be useful, but for a security minded user, they are completely useless. Of course, that won't stop high sales from people who just don't care about people downloading whatever they happen to be saying on IRC, but i'll be sticking with ugly wires for now =)
For some reason, whenever companies make partnerships to make a superproduct i get nervous. I can't really see much wrong with this, but i have that little feeling the DC2 will have some little thing in it that will restrict users' abilities to do something in some way. I'm probably just being paranoid, but I've seen too many of these little partnerships end up as major problems.
At least until some crazy American smuggles a wireless net setup into the country. The most fitting quote i can think of is "The tighter you squeeze, the more star systems will slip through your fingers...". -Princess Leia, Star Wars
You can spend a lifetime designing the perfect game, porting it to last weeks release of technology every week, and making sure you can push the resolution capabilities of any monitor. Let's just hope that this doesnt take as long as Tribes 2 (which must be pretty damn good considering how long they've spent on it)
If people start to learn to build their own hardware, they are forced to learn other things, like how the electronic signals work. Things like HDTV will no longer be closed to public eyes, as more and more people would learn how to build hardware designed to reverse engineer the HDTV security. If this gets to be widespread enough, things like DirecTV's electronic warfare act would be more of a hit to them than to the hackers, as it would take out a high percentage of their customer base. Of course, this would most likely never happen because joe blow doesnt know the difference between a resistor and a refrigerator magnet, but it's nice to imagine =)
The mirrors won't be overflowing because half the linux community is at the Linux World Expo in NYC for the next few days. Too bad I'm stuck in !@#%$%$!#!@#$ school, otherwise I'd be using my ticket and be on my way there right now =(
90% of the users are cheap SOB's like myself. They won't pay anything, mostly because they dont have anything. Lots of em are kids. And yes, thanks to napigator for windows and built in support on gnapster, very few users will NEED to pay to get music. Thank you opensource.
One program is speakfreely. I believe the website is on freshmeat. It sends voice messages compressed over any net connection (not quite like a phone convo, more like IM). Works nicely on my 56k, if you have a little T line than it would be great.
Are we honestly expected to believe the privacy policies of people who have signed the paychecks for people who were convicted of espionage? Yes, I'm referring to just about every national government on earth.
The thing that transforms from a bot into a handgun that looks so real you could hold up a seven eleven and steal the rest of the transformers off the shelf. The cost of megatron and the small fine for robbery is probably cheaper than it'll be to get them off ebay =)
If profits are falling, yeah, cancel the most expensive thing. But what some people don't see is that this will drive up prices of the remaining stock of dreamcasts through the roof. People will be scrambling to buy one, just as the people in the 1930's were scrambling to sell stock. Retailers can and will make a fortune if production stops.
Opensource programmers seem to be getting treated like the athletes of the geek community. They show their talent, get a sponsor, and continue doing even better than ever. This is a prime example. Opensource programmers than can get sponsors will probably not become rich, like our friend Bill, but they're able to become much more motivated now that normal people are really starting to see what opensource is.
There will never be quote "perfect" software. As the title says, it can only suck less. Many features that some people love, other people hate, and some really important features can simply not coexist with other less important features. Someone will always be unhappy with a piece of software, which is why we have variety.
This would probably be a great resource for anyone interested in writing drivers, as this would show how the kernel itself looks at things, and probably how other drivers work. This is the kind of information that really needs to get out there if the Linux community is to benefit from users writing their own drivers or even from companies writing drivers for their own products in an environment that they are unfamiliar with.
If a crusoe can be plugged into a server, what's preventing them from plugging them into a mid tower as well? I'm sure that overclockers would have a field day with low power low temp processors like the crusoe.
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt in that you may be an experienced computer user, but as for linux's alleged unreliablity, all i can say is, prove it.
Now i can finally fill up all that unused closet space. How many nodes should i get? Oh wait, i forgot, i can't even afford _one_ server...maybe some other time =)
Yes, it is. It's called the tux kernel poster. Big penguin thing, top left corner.
Does that mean that if i can port msadc.pl to a blackjack table i win the jackpot?

But will it really matter if the admins of SMTP servers are too lazy to setup the blackhole list to make sure that the spammer relays can't send mail?

According to the article, the film that they were actually writing to was not plain silver, but Ag2O, silver oxide.

I'll bet its an underclocked P3 or a brand new chip that needs 2 more years of work.
What do they mean by extreme programming installed? If you're looking at it, isn't it already installed? Shouldn't it be explored or something?

So much for doing calculus homework all day. Reimann, eat your heart out.
Finally i can see that without mistranslated subtitles and bad bootleg quality!
