While entirely laughable, I'm glad this story is in the New York Times. Getting the Spanish Inquisition-esque ways of the these enforcement agencies out into the media is going to be one of the few ways to make it stop. Hopefully people (meaning the general public, and not just us here on /.) will soon realize just how ludicrous these methods are.

The game was amazingly done, and it has many qualities that would bring me to expect it to do well. Mainly:

-It is for more platforms that most mainstream games (Mac/Windows/Linux/Xbox360).
-The animated cutscenes were brilliantly done, especially how they used an animated version of the character you created at the start.
    -The script was hilarious.
-The popularity of penny-arcade lent to easy advertising.
    -It was only $20

This is a step in the right direction. Hopefully the US patent system realizes that it's messed up, and now that companies (especially ones that hold as many patents as red hat) are asking for limits on those (which would inevitably annul some of the ones redhat holds) it might be the push that's needed to spark reform.

Google is just the company to give them this competition, and Dell's equally enormous resources will surely fuel the hardware side of the development.
