http://www.freeworlddialup.com/ [freeworlddialup.com] Gives anyone a free phone number forever, globally, and you can dial to and from most VOIP services.

That just doesn't have the same feeling of excitement as getting up at 2am in the pouring rain, going to a telephone booth with a 555 timer chip and piezo, making freaking calls with your computer next to you plugged into the 12V socket of your car, then posting abusive messages anonymously on your favourite BBS. And all for free, man!

But I had to laugh at the title. The meaning of the structure of networks is a stupid idea. The purpose maybe, the philosophy behind the structure maybe. But the meaning of? Go ask a Dadaist.

To some it is boring, yet to others it's a sign that not only is Linux not going to go away, but it is available for any business, government institution, school, person etc. to modify and use it as they please

I just read some reviews on Slackware, then Gentoo. I run Ubuntu at the moment. I think people bash Slackware because it's difficult to install and maintain compared to others. But if someone gave me the job of installing Linux onto a computer that will later be difficult to physically access and must work no matter what, say, for example, in an operating theatre, then Slackware is a worthy choice. Seems like it's possible to get exactly the features you desire with slackware and nothing else.

But it seems to me that everybody is thinking that every Linux distro's big wish is to pass the wife-test. Not everybody wants to design, build and maintain their own car. Most people just want a car that works and gets fixed for them, but it would be a sad day if we had no alternatives like slackware.

Where's the source code for Googleearth, or VMWare, or NXClient/Server or the nVidia proprietary drivers? Where's the source code for your router? Exactly.

A lot of what makes a Mac a Mac is the whole "it just works" thing. Many people don't quite get this until they've actually used a real Mac for more than a few weeks. Plug things in and you don't need to dick around with fighting to get it to work right. Sleep and hibernation that work the way they're supposed to. But with a machine like this, you toss all that out the window - which means one of the most attractive things about owning or using a Mac (aside from the joy of OS X) goes out the window too.

You don't happen to work in a macshop or something, do you?

Heaps of computers 'just work'. Maybe not Windows ones. And heaps of Macs just die suddenly. They are pretty, they are easy to use, but they still aren't worth the money.
