    I'd much rather use a 386 then a new 1.33Ghz machine. Those 386 chips were build like tanks, you cun run over then with a car and still use it. The fan could die and it would run months without it. The opperation of the 386 is well known, and studied, any bugs in the chip are well documented and can be programmed around.

    Any OS can crash, even linux has kernel panics. The only OS that I would be willing to trust on something like the space station would be something custom built for it.

    When the CD player in this box goes out, or the hard drive. You will end up with a pretty useless box. Sure we geeks could probably fix it with ease. But what about everyone else? If one component dies then the entire box has to be shipped out for repair, taking everything else with it. One good lightning strike and every piece of your entertainment system is one smoking hulk. I don't want everything to be built into one unit. I like modularity, I like having cables that I can run from one box to another, controlling the way things talk to each other.

    You could no more prove that the light has been travelling more than 6000 years than you can prove that you weren't created 5 seconds ago complete with all your memories.
    Ummm.. sure I can. Aim a telescope at a light source, when the earth's orbit is at the oposite end do it again. The difference in the angle of the telescope, and the distance between the 2 spots in orbit can be combined to show how far away a light source is. It's called triangulation. Try paying more attention in geometry class, ok?

    Well, they are pretty darn big, and were found almost anywhere. I think they minght grab someone's attention. I think a T-Rex would be kinda interesting and should have been there.

    Just because the colors are not real doesn't mean that what is being looked at doesn't / didn't exist. When you look with your eyes what you are seeing is not really colored ether, it's just reflecting a specific segment of the light spectum, but that doesn't make sight any less fantastic. I'm also sure that the "colorfully innacurate" data isn't what is being used for research data ether, it's just made that way for posters and stuff.

    I tried the beta version of Mandrake 8 and I loved them, they got all my hardware working perfectly. Then I downloaded the release version of Mandrake 8.0 and I'm having some interesting hardware problems. USB refuses to work after getting through about 5 steps of the install which takes out my mouse. I'v had erors partitioning a hardrive on a slightly older system too. The beta3 seemed to work almost flawlesly, but for some reason the release seems to have added a lot more bugs.

    The biggest problem with NT isn't necessarily the security holes. It's the idiocy of the admins.
    Is that really a problem of NT? All OS's have some stupid people running them. Let me pull some number out of by butt for a moment for the sake of argument. Say 10% of the people administering a network are idiots, no matter what the OS. It may seem like there are more bad NT admins, but that's just because there are more NT networks. It isn't a flaw with the OS, it's just human nature.

    What about taking that huge set of random data, representing it as a number. If you break that number down into say, a series of smaller numbers that when one number is raised to the power of the next number gives you the orriginal number? I've been thinking about this problem all morning, and this solution hit my while driveing to get lunch.
    It may be a dumb idea, it may not even work at all. If it wouldn't work could someone explain to me why it wouldn't work?

    think about this... what happens when you try to zip a zip file? Compressed files make pretty good random numbers.

    If I lay out out complete blueprints for the space shuttle, you're not going to have that much better an understanding of it (unless, of course, you've already know how to deal with situations like that).
    Almost everyone already knows how to deal with adition, subtraction, multiplication, and the like. By breaking down something that they don't understand into something that everyone undestands it may become easier. I wouldn't want to look at extreamly complex equations this way though, because you lose yourself in the scale of the problem.

    I doubt the problem with putting Quake 3 on a school computer is specific to Quake 3. I work in the Computer Services department on a school district and we don't allow ANY games on the computers. Except for a small few "edutainment" games. The more software that is installed on a computer, the harder it is to support. Plus the school doesn't of a license for the game and could get into legal trouble for having unlocensed software in a lab. We don't even alow non game software for the same reason.

    Even using as a "preview service" are stil breaking the law. If you don't own the CD, and you don't have permission from the artist, then It's illegal to piracy to download the music.

    If I go into a chat room with a fake name and start saying things thinking that I'm anonymous, does that count? If there is a way to trace someone then they are not really anonymous. These people went into a chat room and started saying things, the servers have a record of thier IP that can be synced with thier ISP so they weren't really Anonymous. I do agree with this ruling but it made me think, how hard to you have to try to keep your identity secret to truly be considered anonymous?
