While Napster may have made MP3s popular, you heve to remember that they didn't create the format, they ust use it. Microsoft couldn't buy the MP3 format from Napster because they never really owned it. =\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\= \=\=\
To put PVC pipes in you have to dig up the ground. These pipes are already in place, ust send in a little robot to pull the fiber through behind it and you don't have to bother breaking ground. The article says it would cost several million to put in a system of conduites that mimic these ald tubes, several million dollars isn't a small amount of money to be saved. =\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\ =\=\=\=\
You also can't use the telephone over your cable coonnection (Not counting VoIP). With DSL you get to use 2 different things over the same line, just like cable. It's like getting 2 phone lines. =\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\ =\=\=\=\
I have almost the exact same setup as you, 2 blocks from the CO, Verizon DSL,and for the same amount of time (I'll assume you ment october of 2000). Although you havn't had any problems yet be prepared for a tech support headache if you ever do. Verizon has about 90% idiots in the tech department. I'm generally happy with my service, although would KILL for a static IP address. Verizon seems to have the odd idea in this area (South east PA) that if you want to switch DSL providers you can't. A few of my friends have tried to switch, when they canceled thier accounts with verizon they placed a "hold" on all thier lines for 6 months. No other DSL providor could access the lines because Verizon is the local Company here, they controll the wires. There is another provider here that offeres static IPs for the same price as Verizon, I would love to switch but I'm affraid of getting cut off from my bandwidth. =\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\ =\=\=\=\=\=\
Dude, my comment is so not insightful. Not that I don't like being modded up, but I want it to be for the right reasons. =\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\ =\=\=\=\=\
I would estimate that close to 90% of all Open Source advocates are also advocates of private file-sharing (which Napster facilitates).
I wouldn't really call Napster "Private" filesharing, since it has no access controlls. Once you connect to the network your files pretty much become public, since anyone with a napster client can grab them. =\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\= \=\=\=\
On some of the recent video games I rented there is something in teh manual that says it can't be rented, or transfered. I'm really not sure if that would hold up in court though. The video games that are rented at blockbuster have been licensed especially for rental. I DO agree the that there is a very blury line here as to what counts as fair use. I'm not familiar with Aimster's use, but is it possible to restrict the people that can download songs from you? You couldn't really limit it to your friends if that wasn't the case. =\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\= \=\=\=\

I really dont find the voice ads that annoying. They are only a few seconds long and play only once before each call. You can talk as long as you want on each call too. I really hope they can manage to stay free the way they are because I relly on them for my longdistance service now:) It's great to be able to talk to my girlfriend, who lives across the country, for hours and never have to worry about the bill. =\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\= \=\=\=\

Once it gets to that point they will be able to controll everything you do with the internet. They can block ports and many other things. You can't really do anything about it because your only option will be to leave, but tehre won't be any other ISPs left. Can you really live without internet access? Hmmm... let's jsut have some fun following your example a little further. Planting evidence will still be a crime, so the guilty police officers will be arrested by the ones trying to make a living. That will cause the number of police officers to drop. If there are less police officers then actual crime will rise. It will eventually reach a state of equallibrium. This brings up visions of a computer program I wrote in highschool for a test. It delt with populations of rabbits and wolves, and made all kinds of interesting graphs. =\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\= \=\=\=\=\
As the demand for skilled network admins goes down less people will get trained in that area. This will eventually decrease the supply for them. There will always be networks that these servers can't handle. I think that this minght just serve to "weed out" the people who really arn't good admins. For example, the people who sign up for those "get your MCSE in 25 days, no computer experience required" classes. =\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\ =\=\=\=\=\
If the goverment didn't controll the airwaves who would? The huge megacorps, that's who. Radio stations run by the public now are very few, but if huge companies are allowed to buy up the airwaves then they will become extinct. =\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\ =\=\=\=\=\
I'm not. The goverment should be using the software that is best for the job that needs to be done. If that happens to be free software then so be it, if it's windows then that's fine too. If they require a piece of software that has no free alternative then they wil have to have that software designed, which will cost money. In short what I'm saying is, "Use the best tool for the job". =\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\=\= \=\=\=\
