  1. Re:AT&T and Uverse on Verizon, Fiber Or Die? · · Score: 2, Interesting

AT&T Uverse installation is a joke. Here they have thousands of techs that can install the service in under an hour or two & what do they do? They hire total noobs (cheap) that take 10+ hours(not kidding) to install & it still doesn't work! True story, it was over 12 hours in our home & it barely worked. 2nd attempt was 8 hours & it was improved but still had problems. The only reason their 3rd attempt worked was because my brother (installed phones for 20 years) came over & told them what to do!

Blazing fast? Well, sure... for one computer, 6 meg down a bitn under 1 meg up. 2 computers 3 meg down a piece, they split the bandwidth. We have a houshold full of computers. Not a deal breaker but annoying. Could not get my VPN to work through their router (deal breaker), & the techie appeared to have total access to that router with out my permission. Oh & torrents did not work well.

The final: HD quality sucked. Now we have Wide Open West, multiple static IPs, faster speeds (6.5 down 1.5 up, torrents scream, & I can use my own proxy server. Excellent HD! And they aren't Comcrap!!!!!

  2. Love my 21" CRTs! on Obituary For the Sony Trinitron · · Score: 2, Insightful

Got 2 Trinitron 21" tubes on my desktop at home & work. Wife has one also. Got the 3 at home used, dirt cheap. People giving them away because they got their LCDs.

Personally I prefer the image on CRTs over LCDs. They are great for CAD & IMO gaming as well. Plus I require the screen to be the same distance from my eyes so the only thing an LDC buys me is clutter space behind the monitor.

So keep buyin your LCDs & I will keep a lookout for people dumping their Trinitrons! Now if I can only find the storage place for all these monster monitors....

  3. DX10! on DoJ Extends Microsoft Oversight for Two Years · · Score: 1

Making DX10 Vista only really is a crime. The software I use professionally barely runs on Vista (OpenGL), so unless I want to duel boot for games, I can't enjoy the eye candy of DX10 games. The DOJ oversight? Bet they havn't a clue about MS making their 3D API Vista only.

  4. Re:What the RIAA does on Recording Music Without the Recording Industry · · Score: 1

Sure there are a lot of people can sing really, really well... some can even put on a decent stage performance. But a person that can play an instrument, sing, & WRITE greats songs are actually kina rare. Someone really good, with ambition, can tour & will get a following. Unfortunately they gotta be willing to starve for quite some time. Can there be superstars without the RIAA? Well yea, I think so. There were superstars before the RIAA, they just made their money performing rather than selling recorded music. One would hope that this can & will happen in the future.

  5. I can DUMP COMCRAP?! on AT&T To Offer TV Over Phone Lines · · Score: 2, Interesting
After reading almost every post here, I thought it's time for my first Slashdot posting (after lurking for umm... quite some time).

The big beige boxes been springing up all around my area. One very large one was put in about a block away over a year ago. Late last year they ran fiber from it & put up another big beige box right to my condo complex. I was quite excited. Went so far as to bring beverages out to the workers. When?!...I would ask, WHEN!?

You see, I've been stuck with Comcrap, Wide Open West is too expensive, no dish allowed, & DSL was not available. When Comcrap took over Mediaone, service went from barely tolerable to worse. After a few years Comcrap worked out most problems but still has very slow uploads & bittorrent's are way slow. In the last year speeds slow to a crawl during prime time. They re-wired old high-rise apartment buildings nearby & added 1000s of customers. Complaint after complaint & no fix.

Now AT&T is offering this U-Verse thing. Yep, all the same stuff Comcraps been trying to get me to subscribe to for years. Nothing new here everyone says. What's the difference? Up front, what makes this huge for me, is cost. If I switch, I can get the 3 set-top boxes (with DVR), all that stuff that comes with it (like HDTV), all for slightly more than I pay now. Plus 6 down/1 up DSL that might even be somewhere near advertised speeds.

DUMP COMCRAP! Years of problems, more than I care to list but one more "I'm sorry sir, but you need to understand the nature of the Internet, we can't guarantee speeds" & I am going to pull the phone out of the wall.
