We have this e-prescription system in Estonia for over 2 years now, nation wide.
The good - It's easier to get some recurring prescriptions that you have to take all the time, you just calle the doctor and say you are running low on the meds, he checks your previous prescriptions and can easily see that yes, you should have only a few left... (to detect you are not attempting to scam extra medicines for black market or something).
Also another good thing is that combined with an electronic pharmacy database, you can check online exactly which pharmacies currently have this medicine in stock in the right quantity(My partner takes meds that come in 10, 20, 30, 50 and 100mg forms, She only wants the 100mg ones).
The bad - Initially they had performance problems because they forgot one basic simple thing when calculating peak usage - All elderly / pension receiving people(They are also the ones who require a lot of prescription medicines.) get their pension on the same day in the beginning of the month. This gives them a reason to leave the house and go to the city, and most of them also buy their medicines within the 2 days period following it, causing a massive performance bottle-necks for that moment(This problem was later fixed by adding more servers + optimizing).
This is super! This means that a lot of companies will finally bother, or at least consider it, to pay the development companies(and consultants) to replace or patch their old web based intranets and business softwares. This my friends means pretty soon we'll have a lot more work, which means we can bill them adequately(because you can say that this time we built it on the latest and greatest HTML5 standards)!
Unless of course some manager decides it's simpler to let their IT department just opt out of the upgrade and pretend they will be OK for the next 10 years using IE6.
This solution what the parent is suggesting is a rather good one actually and can be used in the PHP world also, although you still need some good library to help you handle the json objects but that is trivial. It does involve a rather big paradigm shift as you end up with coding a lot of your business logic in javascript on the client-side and using a lot of short ajax requests. But it does allow you do be more dynamic on the front-end in any way the customer sees fit. The down-side is actually that you are writing big parts of your code in javascript which can be a problem if you want to keep your code hidden from the prying eyes. Security as mentioned can be an issue if not properly handled by the backend. To sum up the parent commenters post: The best framework might just be a HTML5 and a powerful javascript library combo. ExtJS, JQuery and Dojo are all rather good.
Having a separate subdomain for images, video and content can actually improve speed when those subdomains are cookie-less and properly cached.
Although having one subdomain like that would be preferred. Also, many developers are using Google(or others) CDN for javascript frameworks and popular API's to improve loading speed(You are very likely to already have the Google CDN JQuery in your browsers cache) and reduce bandwidth usage.
Depending on static/PHP/Python/WhatEverYouUse engines, i think 16GB is a bit overkill for 1000+ users per day, but it all depends on the application ofcourse.
Umm, They do actually! But it requires that you know the hardware, which is why we have very nice and handy things called PS3, Xbox360, Wii and all the other nice consoles...
Well, Someone posted the Titanium Rings link before, and i found that they actually make something similar to the One Ring... + You can have something engraved inside also! Looks nice, but not that similiar to the real thing...
http://titaniumrings.com/GOLDaccents/oneB.html
Hehe.. My Advertisement showed "The Titanium Spork"
And my first idea was Naah, that would be strange to wear.. and only then i realized that it's actually not a suggestion by typical geeky slashdot user but a random ThinkGeek adv...
I don't get it, they are awarding CPU-hours... Lots of them of course but wouldn't the projects be way more happier with X brand new PS3's? Because it's already a proven fact that PS3 is twice as useful as a research computer rather than a teenager playing equipment.
I'm sure Sony lawyers could think up a way to Sue them for this also! After all, they are the most leading and on the cutting-edge on this type of... ee... Technology:)
Umm... I've been using Vista for 6 months now, and i have to admit, it ain't perfect - not by a long shot. It's full of annoying bugs, stupid ideas etc, But unsecure? Far from it(Assuming the user has at least a bit of a common sense and logical thinking).
I've been using my Vista without any anti-virus anti-spyware etc stuff all the time without problems. Now, i do scan my machine from time to time throughly, but i don't keep the software constantly monitoring etc.
Basically, the way i see it, Vista is at least as secure as any other OS out there, assuming the user doesn't download and run any strange niceboobs.jpg.exe files(The same goes to linux with shell scripts for example(assuming chmod +x)).
Anyway, what i really wanted to point out is, Vista is crap, it's resource hungry and annoying sometimes but it sure as hell ain't that unsecure as most of you seem to think. This ain't 2003 anymore and it ain't XP without service packs.
Excuse me, but i believe Russians are the DDOS attackers, specially lately, when they are bombing Estonia IT networks because of their stupid monument.
I live in Estonia, and no, i don't speak Russian language.
Now, maybe a big part of the world doesn't even know where Estonia is, but We are quite advanced IT country, here's some examples: * We got National ID cards - and loads of services that use it as identification * We just launched a cellphone based ID service, that basically replaces the need for a smart card reader and allows identification from anywhere in Estonia. * We have E-Government * Our internet banks are surely in the top 3 world wide from feature perspective * And last, but not least, there's Skype
... and i'm about to go back to XP today. Why? My Hardware is not supported and valuable software does not work.
Hardware: I own a HP compaq nc6220 laptop with 2ghz cpu, 1GB memory and intel 915 graphics. No WDDM Drivers for my graphics card, No Aero - No WoW effect. Strangely, Sleep doesn't work either, so i've gotten used to hibernating all the time. Bluetooth is acting strangely, canceling transfers etc..
Software: I never got Rational License server running, so i can't use Rose and other Rational software, because i can't get my licenses to work. Also, we use IPSEC VPN at work, and damn it took a while to get a client working. I think that the biggest problem for me is big HDD usage. Vista constantly touches something on HDD. My laptop has a slow hard-drive and it really slows Vista down to crawl... XP feels twice as responsive. And, as an extra quirk, more HDD and CPU usage means Less battery time.
But it's not all bad. I love that all Copy progress windows have speed indicators. I love that when i click the clock i get a calendar! Finally! I also love that My Computer has HDD capacity indicators as Bars. Voice Recognition was fun to play around, but it's only useful when you are alone and your hands are tied.
Just my 2 cents PS: I've used Vista for 2 months straight now...
I looked at TFA, and i watched the video and images in there, and came to a question:
If my cellphone has a 3.2Mpx color camera built-in it, Why can't an expensive spacecraft like this have a decent COLOR camera?
If you don't like the site then just stop visiting. You don't have to be here.

Please do send me an ad / job posting about what you are hiring as I'm looking for a job?

Well actually, i think it DOES work! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_voting_in_Estonia - It's a way smaller country than the USA, but that's the benefit actually on this type of project.
I don't really understand why you're modded insightful, but it sure as hell made me laugh :)
