They fear that if too many people export then they wont buy the other region releases.

Sony says "hey! too many people are exporting ps2s and selling them" (as the demand is super-high.) Then they re-sell them at an inflated price and sony is unable to get the profits from selling to the person in the states.

This is a common misconception. DVDs and VHS are released at the same time, however.. VHS has two releases. The first VHS release is highly-overpriced and basically for rentals.. but you can buy them if you look hard enough, usually its around 100$ a tape. Jane M Healy addresses this issue in her book "Failure To Connect." All about schools and computers, she outlines some of her own personal experiences with computers and schools.

One of my favorite anecdote's is when some buisness involved in "Educational programs" came to visit her school and sell their product. When she asked the person-behind-the-desk how their programs would improve on the current system, they were at a complete loss and said "noone has ever asked us that."

There isnt a valid reason to have laptops for 7th graders, everything they need to do on a labtop can be done on a public terminal. And even then, its rare that the computer becomes more then a glorified toy. Im sure the student being able to change the color of their text in Word is a great contribution and huge advancement in the writing process. Not to mention the evils of spell checkers when introduced at a young age.

She also goes on to mention the problem with alot of educational software. Most education software is wholly developed by the programmers without even getting advice from an educator. The quality of educational software is poor at best. I mean, how much did you really learn from the oregon trail? (who else used to kill off their characters just to leave a dirty message on their tombstone for future players to see? "miss jane died here, she was a filthy fuck.")

BlackDouglas is right, educators are being sold on the flashy-ness of computers and the idyllic fantasy that comes along with it

Save the money thats being wasted on such frivilous expenditure and buy the students some better books or for-dues-sake give the teachers a fucking raise! Teaching is the 2nd most important job in this country next to doctors, and they are all paid piddly-shit. When did it become ok for our children to be taught by 2nd or 3rd rate teachers because everyone with a proper background in education can find a better paying job somewhere else?

  11. I dont think hes asking the wrong people at all :) on Social/Technological Implications Of Nanotech? · · Score: 2

Im a sociology major and I graduate in May. I've been working on a novella covering this topic exactly. (although recently ive been quite lazy in those regards)

First and foremost you must realize that social change is gradual. The ultimate ends to nanotechnology is the ability for anyone to have anything they want at the push of a button. But that wont happen for a long.. long time. Using today as an example, it should already be possible to access any song with a click of a mouse (or a few clicks) but basic marxist theory states that the people in power want to stay in power and will fight for that power to the bitter end. They actually reconstruct society in order for the people not in power to think they have opportunities to advance, but the opportunities for these people to excel are next to nothing. (spare me the story of your great grandfather working in a coal mine, those are outliers usually based on luck.)

So when nanotechnology comes into play, look for billions of dollars being spent to -fight- the introduction of this technology to the general public (similar to the RIAA's spending now). Once the ability to reconstruct matter efficiently and effectivly gets in the hands of the people, there is no -need- for a true power structure anymore, and that scares alot of people.

There would be no need for a governmental system beyond regulating abuse of nanotech (but then again, who cares about that when i can make a cheeseburger out of a rock? Or have natalie portman walk out of my wall for a quick shag.) Puritan morals would be, well, crushed. With everyone being able to recieve instant gratification, we must look towards the other human abilities.

I imagine you would see the division of society into a few categories.. Artists, Explorers, Scientists and Nanobums.

Artists figure out new things to create with nanotech. Explorers travel the universe, as humans are now immortal. Scientists continue thier pursuit. And nanobums live in utter physical extacy or just have fun.

I think there would be alot more nanobums then any other group

I want to again stress that to reach this form of society will take centuries, even after efficient nanotech is invented.

Keep in mind the above are merely the opinion of a sociology student, and are based on my applications of basic sociological theory with a few assumptions on what super-advanced nanotech will be able to do. I dont consider myself an expert in either field, I just find them fascinating.. I wish you the best of luck and feel free to plagerize my ideas.

First, let me apologize for this post being off topic, but I'd really like to get this issue/idea out there.

In startrek, all it takes to listen to any song is for Picard to request the computer to play it, and the song is played. Imagine, if you will, if music was non-propriatary (sp?) Now that studio equipment cost has gone down a significant amount, Its not uncommon for people to have small music studios in their house. Hell, ive got a friend who se got a studio in his dorm room.

Moving right along, the main thing that is preventing us from having a full database of all the creative works in history is greed. There is this amazing resource that could be distributed worldwide, but corporate greed is slowing down a massive transition in human history. We have the ability, the means, and some say a duty to give as many people access to these musical expressions as possible.

Let's face it people. The future is in widely distributed creative content for free. Now many say that if its free then the artists will be discouraged from their creativity, but society will find a way to continue to create. It always has.

I know I'm being Idyllic, but the internet could be making many more fundamental social changes if it wasnt for corporate greed and a fearful government who both know that the internet threatens their power and status.

If these institutions do not conform to the new system there will be a social revolution. How it will go down i dont know, but it will happen eventually.

Ill stop with the katz-esque revolutionary blather now.

Basically these institutions are trying to halt an extremely socially benificial system, and that is a Bad Thing. They could pull their head out of their collective asses and realize that this is not something to fight, but to embrace for the good of society. (wow, how cliche)

    Ok I'm done.

If the judge allows this to happen, he cannot have much knowledge about the internet.

This proposes another question for me. How can these companies (arnt they publicly traded?) justify such an expenditure? They cannot stop something once it gets on the internet, this has been proven over and over again. Pamela anderson came to recognize this when she attempted to stop that sex tape from being distributed from the internet.

With an extreme commitment to the stockhodlers, they must be using some twisted logic to think that this whole case is in their best intrest.

Or i could be wrong and they arnt publicly traded.

Allright, even if they arnt publicly traded, how can the people behind this case justify such a foolish notion that they can stop distribution of something on the internet. Its impossible. Period. There is no way to remove something on the internet once it gets out there.. its the nature of the beast. The expenditure of such a large amount of money on such a fruitless effort is, well, stupid.

Sounds to me like the lawyers have been giving the buisness owners some false information on the way the internet works. The Internet is a more powerful freedom-of-information tool then ever before. Even if the courts do make everything about DeCSS illegal, guess what. It wont go away.
