I'm 28 and have run basically the same course, with the addition of a divorce, kids, and a factory sell out with a lay off. Google is my choice provider of email and maps. My Gmail has about 6 years of emails, and anything beyond that is just for reminiscing. No college degree, but spent 5 years running a factory with mostly linux servers and one SBS server for MS-SQL that the ERP system ran on. I hosted everything on-site with the nice Adelphia / Zito Media fiber run into the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania.
In the last 2 years I helped my sister start an art giclee print shop. 12 color printers are a huge headache with rich, picky artists demanding perfection. For the art shop, hosting email on google for our domain and business has "just worked" and "for free".
Then I moved back home to start flying. Meanwhile I'm working cleaning jobs, dish washing, and delivering food, while earning my Private Pilot's license. We've got some high unemployment, and people just don't have money for computer tech help.. commercial or private.
What does Yahoo! have to offer?? Their messenger never was that great. Trillian has an account on there.. along with my old ICQ number and AIM account. They just make me think of a "hey, me too!" type of company. More hype than "wow, cool, that's the best i've seen that done!" sort of thing.
Oh.. maybe yahoo games are better. but that's because MS bought Zone and ruined it, just like hotmail. Every now and then I'll play chess with a friend waiting for a flight at the airport.
Whenever I "fix" someone's computer with all the Yahoo toolbars installed, I just wonder if they like the color purple a little too much. Other than the color.. there are better solutions that are simplier, quicker, and just plain better.
BTW, FireFox now has its own sync, much like chrome. Xmarks used to support everything between browsers, but their stupid dropping of password syncing and company sellout lost my interest.
raffle off your own copy.. I'm keeping mine. That's all I signed up for was the free legit copy of Win 7. This RC version is gonna expire at some point.
I had an MS Office class in college.. it was half geeks and half marketing idiots. I wondered why, then I got a job in the real world.. and now i know how to deal with these computer idiots.
Backup Server, Old Compaq DL380, 4 x 500GB SATA drives ($350) SATA 4 port card ($20) LTO-3 Drive ($1500) LT0-3 Tapes 30 x $30 = ($900) SCSI 160 card ($25)
I've got Disk2Disk2Tape, 1.3TB online, 400gb x 30 on tapes.. nightly rsync from 4 different servers, weekly full backup to tape. Complete DR data backup (and windows system state bak's).. under $3k.
And if you set the blocksize to 256k, and use STAR, it'll fill a 400gb tape in 2 hours. That's on dual pentium 3's.
I had an English professor that learned to use the mouse upside down. She said it happened in the lat 80's in LA.. and "NO" we weren't going to teach her the correct way. Whenever we used the projector computer, we had to flip the mouse around...
Now I know why all the FPS games have a "reverse mouse aim" checkbox.
I always start with what seems to me as the dumbest possible problem. Usually I'll mention it jokingly.. as in.. "Is the power cord plugged in and the power strip turned on?"
I've downgraded at least 6 computer in the past 4 months to XP. Media Center edition works great for the average home user, and the Royale Noir theme makes it slick like vista
Is anyone using these large (750gb+) hard drives for backup? More specifically small business backup.
At work we have (4) x 500GB SATA drives RAID5 for our main file server, and (2) x 500GB RAID0 on the backup server. I'm backing up to DLT7000 tape drives, that only hold 70GB (advertised). We have about 300gb of real "data" that needs backed up.
What would be the better choice? LTO tape or 1 TB drives? The DLT tapes and drives are getting old.
I've had some DLT tapes physically break.. and some 250 GB hard drives that were bad. Ideally this is on the cheap... but this data cannot be lost.
You too? I bought RH 5.0 in a box in a store. Then after figuring out the NeoMagic X.rpm for my Thinkpad, 5.1 came out and included the support for it.
Everytime I boot a new OS release, I'm just happy if I can see X windows!
Yes, we default to OO saving in MS formats, being a small office we need compatibility. We're also getting away from Quattro Pro & Word Perfect. But OO won't open a Quattro Pro wb3 file !!! ARGHH. So I had to put MS Office 2000 on a new computer today to convert/open their old spreadsheets.
So.. if it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have had to install MS Office at all!
I use the same metaphor for "memory". It really helps a normal person understand the difference. Then they're even happier to have more "counter top space", which is what makes their Windows XP work a bit faster. (OK, so if they understand the upgrade being done, they're EXTRA happy/satisfied about it).
I love my RAZR v3i. Sure it sucks that the earphones connect to the same mini-usb port that charges it. But I have yet to drain the battery on myself. My wife is a different story though.
I get the most use out of it at about 2-2:30am after the bar turns off their music. I didn't need an iPod.. but i did need a new phone and the RAZR is pretty dern cool and has a better camera than the first v3's. and a transflash memory card so i can actually take some pictures. I also use the thing as a jump drive too. It does it all for me!!
VH1 is preparing to run a show in February of 2006 called "The Top 100 Toys of All Time". My favorite is Wooly Willy. The man with "magnetic personality". He's still around after 50 years. Check out their website
I finally found an online Dutch translater. Ik ben aan het leren nederlands lately.

Don't forget about schools. The media put Columbine on the map, and now schools are becoming more strict, more prision-like procedures. Metal detectors for courtrooms, fine. Metal detectors before homeroom, uhm, I think we've got a problem. Tobacco free schools? War on Drugs? Seems more like a Parent Republic, and I don't want Uncle Sam anywhere near my family tree. Free Speech just isn't enough, I would definately like to have most of my 4th ammendment rights, too.
I did a couple screen shots and made the Mario Bros level my facebook cover picture

This is a FELONY charge. how is that "minor" ???
http://www.oakgov.com/prosatty/index.html
Seriously.. Gmail gives a free phone account. Call the "prosecutor's office" and ask them if that's a felony crime.
A felony crime means no guns, and no voting for life in some states. It also means no job. Or good luck finding one.
BTW, a REAL person answers the phone !!!! please reply if you called and asked
...StarCraft 2
A toy company I used to work for

Any cute girls have my phone number?? Please do call me
Ha-Ha!!
Take I-95 south from DC on any weekday after 2pm. You'll find plenty of problems there. Even the HOV comes to a stop when it merges back in.
If I'm going north around 5pm, I'm better off doing 95 or the parkway to Baltimore, and hitting 83-N to York.. rather than taking 70-W out of DC.

err.. Fairfield, IA. Close enough. Point is.. Iowa had some awesome state laws that let communities jump ahead years ago.
About your sig..
Cedar Falls got lucky with fiber years ago.. PA is lucky to have DSL in the rural spots.. after the whole Adelphia thing.

I agree. Amazon is large enough to use force. My small little website isn't. I have enough fun collecting tax in my own state.
