Also the 2D performance virtually doesn't matter anymore on any of the new videocards, them all being "fast enough that you won't notice any difference".
Actually if you want to do anything with alpha channeling or high bandwidth video codecs you will NEED a modern, fast video card.
As well your video card is only running these newer games (alot now are cutting support for that age hardware) because it doesn't support any video quality features newer than a gforce2 card, and so doesn't look anywhere near as good as anything with even entry level pixel and vertex shaders.
Also note that windows vista requires a fx57xx+ or a ati9550+ graphics card to look any better than bog standard windows XP, for GLASS, you need a decent 3d card. Not even going to mention (dang, too late) games such as battlefield2, or "in beta" games that will not work on this card, and never will:)
IMHO virus problems (assumeing the PC was sent out with a fully updated (as of shipping) virus scanner and ALL windows "critical" updates were installed at the same time, the onus is on the user to keep the thing clean.
Although i do believe soniq MyDVD installs a rootkit, not sure where i heard it, but i have been avoiding installing it as much as possible since i found that.
Yeah, the few largeish companies that the store i work for deal with have a "special" way they want their systems setup, they don't want virus scanners (their own? restricted/no net access? who cares, its their choice) or adware scanners, but strangely enough love us putting firefox on, and are very happy with our "all windows updates and patches" policy.
And yes, we supply ALL install disks, we work from microsoft OEM shrink wrapped cd + sticker packs. Even if the average user doesn't notice the differance, word gets out fast if you stint even one customer on what they are paying for... although aparently big businesses can get away with it:/
Good point, just replace the user side "copyright" driver with a dummy that does its thing and just nods its head to everything and life will be grand again:)
I could probably eliminate some steps between boot, crash, and reboot too...
What? like running windows, if it is really working as intended, it should crash on boot, saveing all that valuable work time you could have spent so you can look at buying a new PC:)
No, actually it means BitComet is a leeching HOST, not client, since it is doing more shareing (over DHT and the original web tracker) than other peers on the original tracker.
So basically BitComet users are being punnished for shareing and seeding TOO MUCH... damn and i though these were the kinds of people that were fostered in these communities.
As an aside, all the torrent sites i use (gotwoot, baka-updates, others like these) use uncapped tracking, and rely on user honesty, which is usually pretty good as i allways see over half the peers being seeders, maybe these communities that have to RELY on ratios need to look at a better incentive/method for getting seeders onboard?
Yeah, some good ol' fashioned payloads would be good to see, who can remember the one that would drive your moniters refresh so high it would destroy your moniter? or "flash-upgrade" each and every piece of hardware it could find?
However we won't see any of these anymore, virus writeing is now a proffestion, you do it to make money not to see how many peeps you could piss off.
All jokes aside, the biggest bottlenecks in AV scanning (and anti-spy) is cpu performance and ram, now most of us now have 1-2G of ram (thanks to its price) so CPU is the next problem.
Only real problem i have with firefox is their lack of a network/silent install (can DL a free MSI compiled version, thanks drakenpern). Since our company started pre installing firefox on ALL new pcs sold, our reports of spyware from new customers has dropped dramatically (1/5 of what it was) which, when the recent increases of destructive (read rootkit) spyware releases this is particularly good.
We service about 3-4 PCs a day where i work, 2 main techs and an extra (omg, our manager actually does work here:) ) this is the setup
3 benches CRTs ps2 keyboards and MS optical mice phone leads to each desk net cable to each desk (10mb/s coz its all we got) A super long cross over cable to our main rig (1Gb/s cat6) 3 cordless screwdrivers 1 multimeter 1 power supply "tester" with status lights for all rails 1 usb-ide box, with a dvd burner that sits near it all the time
on secondary bench we have crt and another ps2 rig, with 4port KVM, 1 phone lead, 2 lan cables
Software is something we pride ourselves on, we build all our new PCs on this desk too and use a DVD to install windows (quite a bit faster), same disk also has all drivers, programs, etc needed to setup, repair, reinstall a pc. Few coppies of knoppix floating around too:)
The usual bits go without saying of course, about 4 spare PSUs, 2-3 vid cards (pci, agp, pci-e), ram bucket:)
Room to spare? tried a clamp meter on your rails to test that? have seen many systems with basic amd 754 chip (semp2800w/64), half a gig of ram, small (120 is small these days right?) hard disk bork at a 6600GT with a 350W psu.
I believe (as i stated elsewhere) most suplyers are recomending a 500W or higher PSU for SLI systems.
Not of course to forget that the prospect that nvidia (and ati for that matter) will be allowing more than 2 GPUs to be slaved together (think SLI "dual" 7800 ultra cards eating 220W each) could tip power requirements toward the nasty 1kW mark soon:)
"I can't even imagine how you could build a desktop system that would ever need much more than 1/2 that PSU's possible output."
Nvidia recomend (and after testing, so would I) that you use at least a 500W PSU for ANY SLI system, of course forgetting peeps who like to have a mini raid5 sata setup in their gameing rig:P
Yeah, its going to sting a little (well, to the tune of $200 for os projects, more if you are makeing cash from it) but i see this as a "Good Thing"(R)(C). Not only does it help to stop some of the more iritateing "linux" mags/sites out there that just run doom/gloom articles about linux, but I am assumeing the funds raised from this will not only go towards bettering the protection of the linux trademark, but i would hope that it would also be spent on some awareness programs (read: ad campeigns) to help spread the real information to those that should hear it.
All comes down to if this is a money grab by Linus or if it is some grand plan. I would hope the latter.
A great (and I admit, one of my favurite) features in mozilla is being able to "accept", "reject", "accept for session" and remember the above prefs for the current site.
I don't NEED to delete cookies, I only have cookies for the sites I want to store them (message boards, internet banking, etc). Sites that don't let me continue unless the cookie is set (some scum are doing this now) I usually just close the window and don't go there, if they are really nasty about how they word it, I tell mozilla to block images from them as well (so i can remember them in future).
We have the tools, use them. Once you have most of the sites you visit regularly set, you will barely notice your privacy being protected.
Not at all, trend micro/mccafee/kesperski are the only real choices for windows boxes, pick the one you like/are fan of :)

Theres customes, if they find things in your luggage that are not allowed to leave the country, they will do nasty things :)
But yes, its stupid, code should be "free" even when you have to pay for it.
As for replaceing passwords, just use EBCD, it does it all automagically for any user.
Get yourself the EBCD (*sigh* google it if u want to DL it) and just remove the password lock from that account.
The only time you need to crack the crypto is when the box is remote or can't be restarted.
There is a way for it to be put on /. without going through the front page?

Maybe we should make up some music CDs that run the "google registry" patch on insertion.
Don't look at me, every computer my store builds has google as its IE home page and search page, as well as firefox :)
If the price was right, and it just forwarded the results from a google search, i may even give it a try :)
Integrated cpu/northbridge/southbridge on a 12,156 pin socket, some say it will support 4 channels of ddr4 and be able to heat a large home :)

Goodluck with the redesign

Good series, love the anime too, SAC and SAC 2nd gig is awsome :)
If Laughing Man Fansubs is reading, thanks ^_^
