I use apple gear every day in my line of work (mostly the mobile stuff). They may be stylish, but they also PERFORM. So many of you marketing haters forget that their gear actually fucking performs, esp. in the hands of a skilled user. I hand built my own (very high performance) computers for over 15 years, yet im typing this on a store bought mac (screaming fast PC right next to it)...... Techies wouldnt buy the stuff if it didnt do work for them.

Sort of true. If you want music that is part of the library on the device then yes, you are stuck with itunes, but thats not the only way to get media on a stock iOS device. I use a Synology Diskstation and their app and can load anything that is on the NAS onto my iOS device, the caveat being that all that data is only accesible by the DiskStation app (with the appropriate hooks for the built in apple media player). Even does Airplay no problem.

Im sorry you see the Library of Alexandria at your fingertips to be a mere source of entertainment. I live in the reality of my time, internet is VITAL to surviving in the modern era. Cant even file your taxes in the U.S. except online now. We arent talking about hypothetical post apocalyptic eras. Im fully aware of the PRIORITY SHIFTING that would occur if we entered a mad max scenario. Even then id be working on long range radio, re-establishing packetized data transfer, and start work on a library that can be easily shared as soon as more basic survival needs were met.

Actually yes it is a big deal. After heat, internet is #1 need in the modern age. You can run a workstation, router and modem easily from solar. Maybe not all day, but enough to get a day of schooling in. I dont think you understand the importance of the internet in every home. EVERY HOUSE should have the option for affordable or free internet, its that important.

I think Tivo screwed the pooch by not including LOCAL streaming to its device. Im dumping my Tivo soon and switching to Xbox/MCE with CableCARD. No monthly fee($2 card rental), WAY better video conversion (Tivo 'highest' conversion setting is a crappy ipad resolution.) and streaming for everything. (with transcoding if needed). If they had jsut been able to make it stream to and from the device, I would own it forever, but all the nice streaming service integration on the Tivo is for naught if I cant also inject my own streams.

No matter what you think you were sold, what you were actually sold remains at the discretion of your provider and can change at any time unless you have something other then a consumer grade connection. While i certainly dont agree, this is the reality we are now faced with. I can transfer 10 GB of TV a day from my in-laws house (we swap surveillance vids), all of it in-network on the same ISP, yet it still counts against my cap and theirs. I have to live with it and compress down to 4 GB a day.

Microsoft had over 90% of the world's computer running its OS at one point in time and no viable competition.
