One thing you forget is that our national security is heavily tied into economic security and growth. If another country is disrupting our ability to do business, then our national security is in danger. USA has always been tied to economic growth before it was even a country, heck that's why the colonies were founded. Why would that stop today?
He's being sued because Cisco contracted ISS under NDA to help clean up code. He worked at ISS on the project, then quit and released ISS' findings. It would be the same if someone worked in a corporate R&D lab, created a product for the company, then quit and tried to sell the product as his.
"Cisco seems to suffer from the same stupidity that most other large corporations do. They'll take a report, and sit on it for weeks, and sometimes months. Full Disclosure is usually the only way to get them to actually fix the issues in a timely manner."
Why was Cisco working with ISS in the first place? Maybe Cisco was pro-actively looking for and cleaning up security vulnerabilities before someone else found them? Ever think of that?
Not sure if you really are Mike, but your facts are 100% correct. It wasn't a new vulnerability, just a new way to exploit a known vulnerability which has already been patched. Also, if I read correctly, you need to be directly connected to the router to execute the vulnerability; it's a not a remote attack.
True and I would add that *most* me-too companies that "race to the bottom" usually have small margins and little market share (Dell and WalMart not included, but their market share isn't because they have low prices but because of their buisness model, which allowed them to offer lower prices). And the price-based companies are always battling other price based companies on price and cutting costs, hence why we say they "race to the bottom."
Innovative companies usually control the market and profits.
It's great that he jumped on another technology, but all he did was create a me-too product using open source standards. What we need is new innovation in the voip world, not "me too".
What about things like integrating with email software, so I can click on a contact and automatically call them, create video conferences as easily as I can an IM sesssion or leverage presense to know if he's on his cell phone or office phone before the client calls him. These are the types of things I'd like to see.
Doesn't "getting Gizmo working with other SIP systems" just sound wrong. Last I read, SIP was an open standard and in that perfect world all SIP products should work together. Call me Pollyanna, but something's wrong here.
They probably snuck that satellite reference in recently so they can claim the right to regulate Howard Stern. Won't work, but they'll try anything it seems.
That's why you need Cisco Security Agent. It stops Day 0 attacks, virii, spyware, worms, etc.. Does not use signatures and has never been compromised yet.
An application aware firewall like Cisco's PIX 7.0 will kill anything running over a standard port that isn't using RFC compliant commands. So Skype can be killed by firewalls now (or any IM program or anything that tries to tunnel over say port 80).
I just can't imagine how a computer-generated voice produced from this technology would be better than the current text-to-speech engines (which aren't 90% as effective as human voice) that have the words in plain english before generating the speech. And it's fairly uncomfortable to listen to those programs, never mind converse with. So conversing with a program with less accuracy might make some go insane or casue wars due to some mis-understanding.
At the same time, it's interesting application for people who can't talk, but might have enough movement left in their necks to generate this speech.
It's a myth that VoIP phones don't have market penetration. The first thing to remember is that a PBX's life is like 5-7 years. 2nd, most companies spent a lot of $$ for the Y2K upgrade, so a company isn't just going to rip out a system for a new VoIP system just for the sheer coolness of it.
In terms of new phone systems being put in, VoIP is winning hands down. It's usually cheaper, hardware wise to move to a VoIP system, maintenence is cheaper, PSTN charges are lower.
Nortel and Avaya are getting KILLED in the enterprise market right now. Both have PBX sales down 25% and their stocks are almost rock bottom.
If they would do a color screen and support skinny, they would make a fortune, especially if the phone was sub $300. Also, the phone would need to support html/xml, ldap and that would be the ultimate. Finally, it a web cam option ca,e with it, you could corner the market in phones.
Call Manager, no matter how much money, can never use SIP. There's a seperate SIP server for sale, but it's not Call Manager. It's for Service Providers who want to replace H.323, and there's no compelling reason to do it, as H.323 is more feature rich.
Cisco isn't going to include SIP in CM until the end of the year, and when they do, it's to target hotels and other public areas with the IP Tel and the 7905 phone.
All of the phones put out by Cisco and Call Manager (the server that runs everything) don't use SIP, they use the open protocol SCCP or Skinny. If you hook up a SIP phone and try to register with Call Manager, it won't even work, as Call Manager dosen't support SIP. Nor is Cisco too hot to trot on SIP, as you can do less with SIP than with SCCP or even H.323. I've spoken to Cisco about SIP (including CCIE's) and SIP isn't anything special, especially in the enterprise market.
Not that I'm doubting you, but how does one TAP huge fiber pipes? I know how to do it with a few strands, but dwdm? Also, is this legal and thirdly, how will they store the incredible abount of data flying through the pipes?

Cisco's got about $19b in the bank. Yahoo Finance is wrong for some reason.

Criminal behavior if you ask me.

I haven't been on this site in a while, can't belive there's nearly a million registered users now. I'm just an old time troll with high karma.
What's wrong with plenum rated?

they already have it:
r _ip.html
Symbol Technologies and they work pretty good:

Also check out IP Blue, a company that sell IP Phones for your IPaq. It works over an 802.11b connection.

At least with 802.11g coming out, the bw will jump to 54 MB (A's speed), be backwards compatable with B clients and use B's range and frequency.

You can always use VPN's between the register and central computer. Then you bypass WEP.
g.729 does use 8 k, but then you need to add L2 and L3 headers, and your looking at aroun 16K, dfepending on the L2 protocol.
