As someone who lives in a rural area, even though I'm not rich, I can tell you that the quality of phone lines in rural areas are pretty much crap and you're better off going with a mobile phone. If the phone companies are being paid per active line, this whole thing will go away in a few years anyway.
Wow, 4 hours of extra work during initial setup. How do you stand it!? Of course with your course material online, getting setup for the next semester's course should take no time at all. Students are now able to access course material when and wherever they are, and can take their course work with them into the field. But let's focus on the 4 extra hours of work you had to put in
Moodle HQ (run by the founder Martin Dougiamas) manages the project, though MoodleRooms does contribute a lot of code. I wouldn't fear about Moodle going away any time soon.
I haven't used sans before, but going there and searching for Moodle brought up a list of issues. The most recent was just over a year ago. There were only two in all of 2010, and 4 in 2009. You've got some pretty high standards there dude.
Even if we shut down production now, the "dangers" from nuclear energy are not going anywhere soon. Spent fuel rods stored on-site at the reactors and piles of nuclear waste that don't have a planned home will not go away by shutting down the existing plants. 20% of US power comes from Nuclear and it won't be easily replaced in the short term by renewables, so that means Coal or Natural gas. Neither are a panacea. I recently wrote an article to try and clarify some of these issues for myself and found the research to do it right really informative. Might help clarify some of the angles for people. http://www.baxleys.org/in-defense-of-nuclear-energy/
I'm someone who lives in the sticks and would benefit from this, having only a WISP now that charges $60 for 765k down. I'd love to have some real competition out here. That being said, access from a cell carrier that is capped at 5 GB a month is not something that's viable. Sure it's enough to check your email and surf around, but if you want to watch movies and backup your files with services like Netflix and Mozy, it just won't cut it. I've been contacting my local rep and I'm just not sure what to tell them. How do you think the government (state or national) could better spend to move forward access for everyone?
I have to agree with you. The people who need GPS in a rural area are the people visiting, not those who live there. That's the only thing I can think he meant. Or he assumes that people who live in rural areas get lost easily.
>>>the White House IT people dropped the ball. When the Obama staff walked in at 12:01 to take over, they had phones that didn't work, computers that didn't work, users couldn't log in >>>
So things have improved.
When the Bush staff walked-in 8 years ago, they had phones that were glued "shut", computer keyboards with keys missing, users forced to stare at walls covered with offensive language, and messages etched into wooden desks and cabinets with knives. $17,000 dollars of damage.
The Clinton IT staff didn't just drop the ball - they left behind vandalism and chaos. Obama had it much easier, thanks to a cooperative president.

Parent doesn't seem trollish. I'd mod you up if I could. Not everything about W was evil. At least not the first year:)
Before we go giving free internet to everyone, let's spend a little money on building out the infrastructure in the underconnected areas. Sure it's still giving away some money, but by taking on some of the startup costs, the government can encourage new businesses in areas that could use more connection options. At my house, I currently have 1 option for getting online at decent speeds. And that is expensive ($50 for 768 down and 200 up). Competition!
I'm showing my ignorance here, but I hold faith that I can still learn something from posters on Slashdot:) Can you explain what the difference between power and energy is? Is it electricity vs energy that is the distinction? Also, in your last sentence, you're saying that megajoules per hour is the same as Megawatts? So a watt is equal to a joule per hour? There's so much I don't know about electricity.
Well, I don't think I'm going to change your mind, but I'll try to explain myself better one more time. I don't say that faith steps in when we don't know how something works. I'm saying that if you follow science's search for origin, you are continually looking for something earlier. That's how it should be. But that search can't go on for ever. Existence must have a beginning and that beginning must come from outside the system. Conservation of energy says that energy is not created or destroyed, so where did they initial energy come from? Outside the system. Outside the system means a higher power. It doesn't matter to me where that line is drawn, and I applaud science for all of the new work in pushing our knowledge ever closer to "the beginning", but logic says that it has to end somewhere.
Why is it that faith, which is by definition not "proveable" laid along side science which is by definition proveable. (Disprovable would also apply in both cases) Why must science always be the opposite of faith. Haven't we moved beyond that point of view? Maybe in the middle ages, you could get away with that argument (the Church certainly did), but it doesn't hold water. Faith (my faith) is the belief in a higher power that created the world we live in. Science is the understanding of the world that we live in. In your science, where does all this stuff come from? What happens a split second before the "Big Bang", or if you prefer an ever expanding and contracting universe, what started it all off. Those are questions that science can not answer, because and some point you are left with the question of where did it all start? Something outside the system has to put it in motion. Call him the clock-maker, call him God, call him Thor, whatever. But at some level you have to admit that science does not and can not have the answer.
Mock the faithful if you must, but in the end, somethings must be taken on faith if you wish to understand our true origins.
Why is it that all of the solutions to "The Health Care Crisis" involve Health Insurance? OK, let's follow this problem to the root.
1) Health insurance is expensive 2) Health insurance has to be expensive to cover high health care costs 3) Health care costs are high because research is expensive and because, health care companies want to make... 4) Profit (sorry)
So, instead of throwing government money at Health Insurance, why don't we throw government resources at Health CARE RESEARCH? Give government grants to health care companies or better yet, to other experts to solve the problems of the day. When the problem is solved, the solution is owned by the public. No more protectionist policies. No more overpricing a technology to make a profit before the generics come in. Research is done on the areas that need to be researched, not just the ones that will make a profit.
The net result? Lower health care SHOULD mean lower health insurance premiums. That will save money for the government (Medicare/medicaid), big business and small business, and joe blow who buys is own insurance. No one seems to be bringing up this approach. What am I missing?
ok, I just want to point out that when you say "All churches are racist", you're making the kind of judgment that you accuse churches of making. Look if you're going to claim superior atheist intelligence, you really should learn some basics of good argument. When you claim that some group offers no proof of their beliefs and then offer no proof to back up your own argument, it's pretty hard to take you seriously. Maybe when you get out of college you'll see that there is more to an argument than shouting.
I think that there is a definite disconnect between the sitting president and the economic situation. The American attention span is far to short and economic trends often take a long time to be bared out. It's hardly fair to give Clinton credit for the dot-com boom and Bush credit for the dot-com bust.
Well, as others have pointed out, this is much heavier than the earlier rovers. But just as important, is that this helps determine a good way to land humans on later missions. There's no way you could land humans in the beach ball. Even if this method doesn't work flawlessly, hopefully much will be learned about how to land large "delicate" cargo on mars...US!
You make a good point, but I would guess that getting a system to slow the decent just enough to achieve a soft landing is pretty complicated. Plus the whole process has to be automated. This isn't like the moon landings where you have an astronaut controlling things and reacting as things change. The "no time to fix it" you mention is the same no matter how you land. There's like an 8 minute radio delay between earth and Mars, so no chance for humans to be involved.
Besides, while this is complicated, getting the whole thing to Mars in the first place is a bit complicated and if they can pull that off, they can probably get this figured out as well.
wow, it's nice to know that there are only positive personality traits about liberals and only negative ones about conservatives. It must be very nice to live in your simple world.
The fact that the national debt is so large proves the point that the Republican party has veered so far away from true conservative values that they are more like Democrat Lite than the republicans of old. A more traditional conservative approach is to reduce the size of government. Maybe not to the level that Libertarians would but in the past 30 years, we've seen a decided move of Republicans to much more liberal tendencies. Remember, Republican and Democrat are not the same as conservative and liberal.

Speed? Really. You're going with the speed improvements of paper? Wow, how can you stand to be so progressive.

Well, that's not making a sweeping generalization and failing to think beyond stereotypes. Bravo for your clearly thought out remarks.

Wait, I thought child obesity was only a problem in America! There are fat kids in the rest of the world too!?
