I am all for enforcement of laws, when they are reasonable. But things like this stink of nanny state. Child abuse is horrible, we can all agree, but pretending like it doesn't exist is sad, and ineffective.
I agree that iPods are debatable (though I think the touch is certainly not), but I specified the PC space specifically to remind the GP that his statement was absurd.
Yes but how many people will actually install this "fix"? Is that worth creating malware for between now and the official patch? I would venture it is a no. Security through obscurity at its best.
The advantage is security through obscurity. Assuming the patch fixes this problem, even if it creates others so few people will have applied it, it is hardy worth developing malware for. This is a very nice stopgap until Adobe gets the real thing out the door.
Yes, you have to pay to edit PDF's. Sure Word costs money too, but there are lots of good free alternatives, plus a lot of people buy Word anyway. If you only edit it once a year, that is a lot of money to be paying Adobe just to use their software a single time annually.
I get this all the time from my shipping agent. Like you said, these are not forms meant to be printed and faxed, no they have 3 32-54 character strings of numbers and are submitted digitally. It kills me what a pain in the ass this is and is my main motivator for moving my business elsewhere.
While I agree the GP is making a silly argument, I also think that you are not evaluating this correctly either. You state that your license should not be restricted in any way, I agree, because you are not a convicted monopolist who has been caught leveraging that monopoly illegally. Face it, MS is forced to play by different rules. Now if you don't agree with the law have it changed, but as it stands, they are on a totally different playing field.
Amen brother. Without kidding, I would like to point out that there are quite a significant number of MS zealots with mod points. My comments pointing out problems with Linux are almost always modded insightful. When I point out problems with MS -1 troll. Yet these same folks are always the first to whine about how slanted Slashdot is. Oh the irony.
Open Source zealots still use IE to post to Slashdot.
I would bet those are 99% work users who only have IE installed. I'm one of them, I would never in a million years choose to use the IE7 forced on me at work.
One of the reasons people buy iPhones is for integration both on the phone and desktop. You know, all your music in one place. This will also have limited use for Touch users who wan't to listen to music without be near wifi. I for one do not want 100 apps from various artists scattered across my phone.
I really love the new Call of Duty, but is is a great example of rewarding the top players with better weapons, "skills", and accessories. Now they do provide newbie areas, which is great. But between levels 10-20 can be just brutal. It takes the fun out for a lot of players. Thankfully I'm in the 30's now so I'm OK, but I would prefer that such a system didn't exist.
Yeah its kinda sad to see that franchise die. I always liked the Unreal series because I thought that unlike the recent Quake/Doom's that they actually cared about the game not just selling the engine.
While I am usually the guy who buys games after a few months, the one exception is games with strong multiplayer. I just can't stand coming in and getting murdered for being a newbie who is unfarmiliar with the controls or maps. Getting smoked for hours on end is not fun.
Google dominates some spaces, that is certain. But what makes them different from say MS, or many other companies is that they don't leverage one product to "help" another. For instance Google Chat/Video- open standards. No Google services require Chrome, or are dumbed down like MS often does with competing browsers. Heck even most of Google's apps are multi-platform. Now I'm not all pro-Google, I think they are big enough they should be watched, carefully, but so far I think they are doing a good job of not illigal leveraging one biz segment to prop up another.
UT3 also sucks pretty hard. I mean all of the points you make are valid, but the end product really is the biggest issue.

Am I missing something?

Really? Name Apple's desktop monopoly. I'm waiting
Not to mention that putting a disc in a Wii and installing PC software are about as far apart as changing the oil and just putting gas in the car.

there's nothing in this sort of result preventing Microsoft from packaging out of date crappy browsers.
Dude they already do that. IE 7, while better than 6 is still a nightmare to code for.
Last time I checked Apple had a monopoly on nothing computer related.
I'm proud to be in the 1% of people who haven't been penetrated by Flash.
I knew Flash was a pain in the ass, but wow apparently Adobe is not just happy raping us virtually.
Sadly the iPhone does not allow folders on the "Springboard".

I don't play to win, I play for fun. Winning is just a nice bonus.
IANAL, but I think you guys have a case for deceptive marketing- of the class action variety.

You omitted the part where he said "if they have no replay value"

I've had enough, I'm backing up all my Slashdot comments. The world can't afford to lose them!
