If we're going to talk "worth" of people, I'd say character is orders of magnitude more important than intelligence or expertise in specific areas.. Guess who's projecting and the weakest link? Have a nice day.
Honestly, the lesson is that this is why we can't create laws against burning the Koran - because it is fucking hypocritical for there to be protection against burning something one group holds sacred, but not things other groups hold sacred and having people hence burn them. This really is a case of the slippery slope in action
It's still utterly nonsensical in response to what it's a response to -- so yeah, take your sophistry to someone who falls for it because I surely don't. Clown.
Why would anyone responsible for these computers (running devices whose operation is dangerous to human life) ever connect them to the internet??
How many millions of dollars a year do you want to spend to maintain that isolation? [proceeds to list a lot of stuff that goes WAY beyond the requirement of "don't connect it to the internet"]
First, on absolutely no account try to write your own from scratch. The best projects now available have been in development for almost ten years (more in some cases).
Which means they have a gazillion features (and risks stemming from those) you don't need. I mean seriously, what pitfalls are there? Don't be a derp when it comes to storing passwords or SQL injections, disallow HTML/Javascript, (simply bulldoze over the < and > implement a subset of the stuff from bbcode et al you need, more or less done..). Limit the max post size, throw some unicode at it during all stages, etc. -- the rest, the actual complexity and risks, seem to come from advanced feature, like templates or uploading files and whatnot (or "user-contributed addons", which you, like many things, simply assume to be a factor -- they're likely not IMHO). But a forum, like the one we're using now, for a much smaller site? Come on... it just pulls text from a database -- if you can't do that what can you do, really?
Holy fuck how did this get modded up? As someone else said already, money IS (one form of) power.
To me, Nineteen-Eightyfour is first and foremost about language that deceives and cripples critical thought, not about televisors and war with Eurasia. Those things have been made possible by the actual subject matter of the book, namely the obstruction of the ability to say 2 and 2 make 4. But don't feel bad, most people seem to miss that.
Certain backward areas have advanced, and various devices always in some way connected with warfare and police espionage have developed, but experiment and invention have largely stopped.
I guess one could/should expand that to "various devices always in some way connected with warfare, police espionage or distracting entertainment".
Aladdin Bad Axe Bad Axe 2 Batman Batman's Revenge Big Laurel Black Pine (a cute name for anal sex I guess) Black Rapids (I don't want to know) Bonetrail Caneland Cougar Canyon Glidewell Tanglewood (sounds bi to me) Warm Springs
As another poster pointed out, male breast cancer is more likely than penis cancer. Would you also be mad at your parents for not removing all flesh above your rib cage after birth?
Also: what are the rates of complications including death resulting from circumcision, what are the rates of penis cancer? Before you know both those statistics, stuff like "unsympathetic, unscientific and frankly reminiscent of the whole anti-vaccination movement" just smells like projection.
And of course, that some people say circumcision should be banned for even consenting adults doesn't constitute an argument for allowing it to be done to children, Mr. Logic Thinker Man.
Even if those "benefits" wouldn't conveniently overlook the risks (did you know that virtually NO KID EVER died of penile cancer, but a bunch die every year because of complications after a circumcision?), it wouldn't justify doing it long before it can provide any benefit. After all, before your sex life starts, none of this even applies. So how about raising the age of consent to circumcision to 12 or something?
Some people would still say 12 year olds can be easily pressured, and they'd be right; but at least some would have a fighting chance. As opposed to babies, ffs.
Oh, and if keeping your dick clean is some kind of annoying chore for you that needs to be made easier, I don't even know where to fucking start. Just eww.
You're right, let's make an actually valid comparison.
How about tattoing random stuff on them as babies? I don't mean swastikas or penises, those might get you shunned or beaten up; how about some random squiggly lines all over the legs and upper body? It's not like it would harm them...... other than in their dignity of human beings who can decide such things for themselves of course. But that's not a factor here, is it.
Ouch, I really ruined it with all those typos and left out words. Oh well, it's best to not know too much about these things anyway... you didn't read the parent post, it doesn't exist. I know nothing.
WTF is Judism? And if the reason is indeed the fact you keenly observed, that all Germans are Nazis, how come it took until June 2012 to reach that decision? Sure not because they didn't really dare to earlier, because they KNEW fucknuts would come out of the woodworks, moaning and lobbying or posting BS on slashdot. Nuh-uh. It was because they planned it for over 60 years. It had to be perfect, it had to work this time. Restricting non-medical irreversible procedures to adults are not only just as sinister as concentration, they are way more effective at hurting Jews (and of course Muslims, but that's just a welcome side-effect).
Following widespread criticism largely from Muslim and Jewish groups, most fractions of the German parliament and Chancellor Merkel are calling for legislation to make religious circumcision of boys legal.
What is that about? She's German, ergo she's a Nazi, so what horrible trap can it be? Oh I know, by having to register a circumcision as religious procedure, religious observant Muslims and Jews can get tracked more easily. After all, those are the ones Nazis really care about, since racism was never their thing, i.e. they don't mind Arabs or non-observant Jews at all. Ah, I was unsettled there for a sec.. pieces that don't quite fit raise questions, and questions make my brain hurt. Good we cleared that up then!
However, it seems lately being a Nazi isn't just exclusive to Germany, read and wheep:
This whole thing is transparent as fuck if you ask me. Doctors get money, religious peeps feel better about forcing this on babies instead of making it a voluntary thing. And of course, the people who have no way to get their foreskin back either way rationalize it.
So, yeah. Whatever makes you feel better *tips hat* haha.
"Add-ons commonly hold extra copies of sites in memory when they don't need to, and the browser now has a mechanism to detect this and reclaim the memory"
Yes, the same memory leaks that weren't their fault to begin with. They STILL fixed them. What part of this do you and the other ano-trolls not understand?
Ridiculous. Robots don't replace engineers, they replace laborers.
Which is what an engineer is. Doing it with the hands or the mind isn't as big a difference as people seem to think.
The modern engineer basically exists because standardized people were needed for us in industry. Engineers don't decide the technical details of their implementation; they don't decide what to implement. Hence they're mental laborers.
Not to mention those generations of robots that will be too complex for any amount of humans to design.
Robots won't replace groups of people who own monopolies and give orders, unless those groups mess up or are subverted; but anything and everything below that will become unnecessary, a commodity, a pet. Don't fucking flatter yourself.
And by the way, I never disagreed with teaching science. As Orwell said, freedom is the right to say 2+2 make four. But when I exercise that right, I also realize that what we consider objective simply isn't. And what is "rational"? Rationally, considering the likely heat death of the universe, there is no difference in the outcome, no matter what we do. It could be argued that a fully functional entity would stop living, it certainly would not be driven in all sorts of ways like we are.
I agree that it's good to learn about logic, and about how the the world around is works in parts, at least in approximation. But if you take it too seriously and think you're actually going to find THE TRUTH, you're a madman IMHO, and should be kept far away from kids. The world is a mystery, kids still know that; leave them the fuck alone. I see no difference between making plans about turning kids into engineers, and turning them into soldiers for christ, or soldiers for oil. Unfuck the adults first, then the kids will come up just fine.
However, thinking we're likely to get any of this (good leaders or good voters) is pure folly.
Where did I make any such claims though?
I'm just saying, fuck "evolution vs. creationism", nothing of value can be won there. The people fighting that "battle" have more in common than they realize, and about things that actually matter they agree to a high degree.
I'd even go so far to say that people in general aren't nearly as big morons as their leaders usually make them seem to be. They're just too many, they don't effectively organize and are so easily divided and conquered; while the cliques that exploit them are much more tightly knit.
Also, advanced newspeak tends to be cooked up in academia, not the pub. Lack of intelligence isn't even the problem, lack of integrity is. Stupid people with a big heart (read: lots of wisdom) don't fly to the moon; but they also don't need to, because their home doesn't lay in ashes.
I guess the typos should be obvious enough, fix and parse accordingly, if you can. Otherwise, don't even tell me, I don't give a fuck... I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything, I'm telling a bunch of people why I find them lame and mediocre and dumb, and brownshirts in spe. In turn they don't care about that, either, so all is well ^^
"but if you plan to live in the real world then you are going to have to accept induction and science even though the logic to do so is tough."
Why? Why is it needed to assume something that you know for a fact you cannot prove?
I know free will likely doesn't exist, I still live as if it did. I also know that everything I have a word for doesn't exist in the way I perceive them to exist either, and to my best knowledge everything is everything. Yet I still say "I" and manage to eat food and whatnot. I still have them, I just don't have too much stakes in these illusions.
Which of course pisses people off who don't enjoy that luxury.
The Real World, an objective view of existance, is impossible from within it. So what you're really talking about is delusion and insanity. It's okay to not know, but it's insanity to pretend you do.
Which is, of course, the irony in all this. Lots of comments here by not really bright people who are proud of not being blind believers, as if that would make them smart in the least; they have no impatience for the unsolvable uncertainties of our existance, and would like to replace them with webs of words which ultimately all fall down when inspected.
"But we're not doing that, they [e.g. religious people] do that!!eleven". Awwww, cute. Here, have a false dichotomy medal.
If we're going to talk "worth" of people, I'd say character is orders of magnitude more important than intelligence or expertise in specific areas.. Guess who's projecting and the weakest link? Have a nice day.
I have 4 words for you: "Bill Hicks" and "Fuck You".
I'll just leave this here: Don't Get Me Started - Stewart Lee - What's So Wrong About Blasphemy?
It's still utterly nonsensical in response to what it's a response to -- so yeah, take your sophistry to someone who falls for it because I surely don't. Clown.

Well, both groups are beat by a junkie who pulls up water from a puddle through a used cigarette filter. That's not only useful, it's also smart.

Well, there's this "swords to plowshares" thing. Shouldn't that be, like, a slight bump in that particular road?
