  1. Funny Story About that.... on Canadian Border Tightens Due to Info Sharing · · Score: 1

I actually know a guy who was on an organized trip who was turned away because they had to inspect the entire bus....he had a drunk driving conviction at some point apparently. He got stuck in no-man's land for a few hours before leaving and then being smuggled back across by another friend of his.

What I mean is that if they fail to act according to stereotypes, they are considered to be "not black" or are accused of acting white. There are natural differences between races of course, which one would expect to see but here I am referring purely to negative stereotypes.

  3. Reverse Racism? on A Criticism of Race Portrayal in Games · · Score: 1

Keep in mind that often when a positive black character comes along, he is accused of being an "oreo" or something to that effect. Even if you had something like a black cop as the hero, people will call it "stereotypical" if he still says "whats up, dog?" to an informant or fellow cop. But if he says "Well there my dear friend, do you have any news on that narcotics shipment coming in a fortnight?" he would be accused of "not really being black." Its like people are EXPECTED to act according to the stereotypes to be a "real" member of their race.

  4. Labs on The Death Of CS In Education? · · Score: 1

I am a psychology major right now at a four year university in the US. I have no interest in being a shrink and want to go into experimental work. Needless to say as a /. member I am also very much into computers. Working in AI or on CNNs (Computer neural networks) would be a pretty sweet fix for me. However there are 2 problems: 1. I suck at math, this has been addressed in other posts. 2. Labs. As a psych major I have to take a ton of em. In fact, the way my schedule and timing is working out, I'll take way more than most psych majors do. If I were to double major or minor in comp sci, I'd have to take more labs. Thing is that I don't have room in my schedule. This is painfully ironic as all (most) CS labs are is showing up to do your hw. This means that CS majors don't actually go to their labs. So this means I have to pay for a lab I won't go to and that will possibly be a scheduling conflict with something else. Needless to say this frustrates me to no end.

  5. Ye Olde Times on MySpace Worm Creator Sentenced · · Score: 1

Whenever I hear of people getting in trouble for exposing security holes, I always think of how in England (and many feudal societies, I'm sure) in the days of yore physicians could be executed for telling royalty just how sick they were. "Your Majesty, you are going to die" was considered a death threat. "hey myspace, your shit is broken" seems to yield a similar response, minus the gallows. As a previous poster said, (to paraphrase) "just because my house isn't %100 percent secure doesn't mean you should break into it to prove it." While I agree, how can one prove that there is a hole in a system's security without breaking into it? Perhaps an email just saying "hey, you left this port open and these lines of code are weak..." or something would suffice, but something tells me that would be a EULA violation.

  6. Dystopia? on Can You Be Sued for Quitting? · · Score: 1

Anyone read Max Barry's "Jennifer Government"? Excellent dystopia about a hypercapitalistic future, one of the features is that corporations sue over everything, to include employees who quit on the grounds of "lost profits."

  8. RAM on Why Do We Use x86 CPUs? · · Score: 1

As we approach the maximum supported amount of RAM for 32 bit CPUs, the computing world will be forced to transition to 64 bit. When this happens, there could be a chance for another architecture to take off, but in all likelihood AMD64/x86_64 will be the winner and not PPC64, IA64, or anything else.

  9. Re:Easy on Why Do We Use x86 CPUs? · · Score: 1

People always want to save disk space. There are programs for OS X today that strip it of extra languages (which is a gig or two IIRC) and remove PPC code from x86 machines and vice versa. The average person running office apps and a few other common things really isn't going to care (or know) about lost disk space to fat binaries. However, I like every byte I can get since my ibook only has a 40gb HD, so I use them. In addition, the more architectures supported, the fatter the binaries and all the more reason to use these utilities. That or the developers couuld just have the programs autostrip themselves of unnecessary code.
