This is the same man who said "God does not play dice with the universe". Not inconsistent. It's tough for one to play dice if one does not exist, yes?
So. Based on that, how does one compress video using a single chip (the patent has absolutely NOTHING about its implementation)? Clarification: do you mean "How does one take this description and turn it into an implementation?" or "How does one implement such a basic and obvious task without infringing on this patent?"
Me too. I worry about what the future of video gaming holds for me when I read review after review forgiving a game's insubstantial single-player mode because "online play is what it's all about." What about those of us who play video games (as opposed to sports, board games, etc.) as a way to have a bit of fun without human interaction? It looks like the best I can hope for is that I'll become too busy to play before everything becomes a foul-mouthed back alley wrapped up in a thin MMO tortilla.
Would mod this up again and again. Why do we have so many parents and schoolteachers who think that it's okay to ban Harry Potter from the library? Because their parents and schoolteachers taught them that it was okay to ban books from their libraries when they were kids. No amount of civics lectures or self-esteem-boosting mantras will undo the very real ACTIONS that kids see and, sometimes, are the victims of.
2. I'm most able to write about what I'm an expert in. That's also a conflict of interest.
I've seen this statement before, and I just don't understand it. How is it a conflict of interest for one to hold forth on a subject in which one is experienced?
Having gone through several prefab Windows boxes in my time (Gateway, Dell, Sony mostly), it seems to me that the volume of crap applications that come pre-loaded and all of which run at startup time has increased dramatically, to the point that the first thing I have to do with any new brand-name PC is either uninstall all the bloat one-by-one or else wipe the drive and start from scratch with a fresh OS install. For a desktop PC, I can understand everyone telling me "build your own, then it will only have what you want on it." Fair enough. But what about portables? Is there a good laptop manufacturer who will sell me a "blank slate" laptop?
Ordinarily, I would expect this sort of performance-hindering bloat to reflect badly on the manufacturer. I think MS is right to be worried that the PC makers might jump at the chance to shift the blame onto the new OS, rightly or wrongly.
The US still has better internet access than much of the third world.
You say that like it's an achievement to be proud of.
I applaud your efforts to raise the level of discourse with strongly documented arguments free of invective or baseless claims.
