I'm a senior at a Catholic High School in New Hampshire, a Catholic School for Gods sake, and just about every single person in my class has tried smoking weed, I guarentee it. I would guess somewhere around the 99% mark. I can't think of anyone in my school who's tried anything harder than weed than maybe 2 or 3 people. Most people at least know doing hard drugs is taking a risk that they're probably not willing to take.

Here's a good example of how bad ATT is. Where I live, the DNS mail and what not are all located all the way accross then into another state. Needless to say, it don't work so I use a local university and warn anyone that wants a cable modem.
One week, the university changed the IP of it's DNS, and just for grins I tried to use ATT's DNS for a while. My wife got fed up with it after a few days of piss poor service and somehow convinced me to call ATT to see if they could help me. Without giving too much away, I can tell you that I found the university's new IP.
Calling ATT was a 2 hour waste of time. Not only did they not have another closer and perhaps working DNS, they probed my machine without mercy, told me that DHCP would help (as if!), and were smart ass in general. I talked to a local clueless dude, his boss and the elite team in Washington. All the same, useless.
The local wait was about 40 minutes. Then I explained that my DNS was not working right and it made surfing very difficult. He ignored me and tried to probe my machine for a while. "Uhh, are you running Windows with our software installed on it?" Well yes I was in fact behind a fire wall with deny all paranoid set, so the correct answer was "yes". He tried some more, gave up and listened, then got his boss so I could explain everything again. I asked him if I had the right sever address and he told me that I did. I told him that it never worked well, and that it rarely responds to an IP address ping. He sent me off to the folks in Washington.
Same song and dance from them too, but one more piece of information. To get another, not neccesarily better, DNS I would have to move. They would not provide me with an address that worked.
My wife had been right though. ATT should provide those basic services to all their users and I should not be burdening everything between me and a decent Sun machine on campus.
Even more on topic is this notion: a company that has been granted a monopoly had better think twice before they attempt to censor and intimidate their users. Where on Earth did they find One Billion users? There are some 125 million net users in the US. Did I miss something in China or India? Did every computer user in the entire world log on? Did Novel simulate 10 users on every US computer for a minute while I was not watching? Did that server just imagine a billion users while overflowing?
You forgot two things, Mr. Piccolo. Linux works and it can be all free so that you can fix it.

Some things are slower, some things are faster, but everything seems to work. If it does not, you might be able to fix it with one of the nice free GNU compilers that every Linux distro comes with. I've yet to come across that one, everything has worked and I spend much more time using my computer and less time fixing it. You can never get anything done when the OS goes under. Of course, you know that.

Here's a good example of how bad ATT is. Where I live, the DNS mail and what not are all located all the way accross then into another state. Needless to say, it don't work so I use a local university and warn anyone that wants a cable modem.
One week, the university changed the IP of it's DNS, and just for grins I tried to use ATT's DNS for a while. My wife got fed up with it after a few days of piss poor service and somehow convinced me to call ATT to see if they could help me. Without giving too much away, I can tell you that I found the university's new IP.
Calling ATT was a 2 hour waste of time. Not only did they not have another closer and perhaps working DNS, they probed my machine without mercy, told me that DHCP would help (as if!), and were smart ass in general. I talked to a local clueless dude, his boss and the elite team in Washington. All the same, useless.
The local wait was about 40 minutes. Then I explained that my DNS was not working right and it made surfing very difficult. He ignored me and tried to probe my machine for a while. "Uhh, are you running Windows with our software installed on it?" Well yes I was in fact behind a fire wall with deny all paranoid set, so the correct answer was "yes". He tried some more, gave up and listened, then got his boss so I could explain everything again. I asked him if I had the right sever address and he told me that I did. I told him that it never worked well, and that it rarely responds to an IP address ping. He sent me off to the folks in Washington.
Same song and dance from them too, but one more piece of information. To get another, not neccesarily better, DNS I would have to move. They would not provide me with an address that worked.
My wife had been right though. ATT should provide those basic services to all their users and I should not be burdening everything between me and a decent Sun machine on campus.
Even more on topic is this notion: a company that has been granted a monopoly had better think twice before they attempt to censor and intimidate their users. The end of local cable monopoly franchises is only an expiered contract and a vote away. Bussiness model (buy monopoly and fuck your customers) goes to shit when the premise evaporates. In the mean time, their market share is not going to grow unless they can do better than AOL.

Alone is right. Are there any other US cities that have more than one cable company? I don't think so.
ATT is buying up competitors like Microsoft buys up software firms. If they keep up poor service like this they will find out that their bussiness model, BUY MONOPOLY AND SCREW YOU, will fail. Their mail, DNS etc are run off an MS box in another state and never work. Their "software" is extreemly invasive and intolerable. Their sevice is also piss poor and has all the bad attitude of the +5 blame the user posts above. The only solution to a problem like this is to demand an end to local cable monopolies. Shutting down critics is just more fuel for the fire.

Really. The source article is a rather inflamatory piece written as an editorial. What does Dan Miller realy want? Does he want the census people to cross reference or does he want raw data?
It makes a differnce you know. The census folks ask what they ask to let us know about it. If they found out how many toilets there are in the average hispanic household, I hope they publish it. If the IRS wants to know how many toilets Abby B. Normal has they are just going to have to ask someone else.

cntrl-c killed the useless attempt to get an answer after 5 pings and zero returns. Of course, this won't work if you depend on the @home DNS because it won't be working most of the time!
You will be better off if you can get mail and DNS elsewhere. I use the local university.
