Can't believe this got modded up up to +5 informative instead of funny. Have the moderaters so few brain cells left as to not see this as a classic troll? (albiet a funny one).
Come on folks, if you were not rolling in laughter at the gay porn lover turned NT administrator, you're taking life much too seriously.
I just love how people will complain that Yahoo started selling porn, but don't complain that they sell porn banner ads based on keyword searches for for sexual terms. If you're in the smut biz, your're in the smut biz. What's the difference?
I always wondered why we never heard more of this. From my understanding, the basic concept was dragging several mile long tether through the earth's magnetic field, generating electricity. From what I heard, they energy produced was so much greather than what they expected, the tether broke and the circuit breaker tripped (is was supposedly rated at a very high rate too). The experiment was not a failure, they just underestimated the energy that would be produced.
This experiement seemed to have shades of Tesla written all over it (ie The earth is a giant capacitor), but I never heard anything more.
Just kidding. I seem to remember another piece on this. Basically, it came to what storage medium had the longest life. Microfilm was out as film degrades. I seem to remember CD's being ruled out as well. Apparently they don't last as long as I thought. I can't seem to remember what the preferred medium was though.
Under the direction of Imhoff, the licensing department has already attracted key
licensees such as Toy Biz, which has the master toy license; Electronic Arts, which is developing and distributing video games based on the franchise; Applause Inc., which has the master gift license; and HarperCollins UK, among others."
Did anybody really expect any other outcome? This was a very cool ideal, but I never thought it could work in today's market. That's probably more a testimate to the state of the industry rather than the validity of their plan, but true nonetheless. Too bad either way.
The original Dune II game was the granddaddy of all RTS games. I can't rememver how many hours I spent on that game. Westwood released a remake of the game, updating the graphics. It's basically Command & Conquer with a Dune feel, but it was still a great game.
I never finished the original, and it always bothered me. I can't tell you how much satisfaction it gave me to finally beat the new version. Any Dune afficianado should check the game out.
Westwood is also working on a new Dune RTS game with a 3d engine. Sign me up!
For consideration, Sony Computer Entertainment will acquire from Connectix all assets related to the VGS emulation technology. Connectix will
continue to offer the current version of both CVGS for Macintosh and Windows until June 30, 2001. Connectix will provide continuing support
to existing users. All further emulation development for the PlayStation(R) game console will proceed under the auspices of the joint agreement.
IBM currently produces PPC chips for Apple. I wonder if they would base this on the PPC platform. If so, it certainly would be a boon for Apple (and who has not been doing so well in the Mhz war for the past year).
How about a little clarity here. What is this supposed to mean? Did Microsoft try to beat MySQL benchmarks? Maybe they tried to beat their own numbers?
How about:
MS suppreses SQL Server benchmarks
or something else that actually comminicates the meaning of the story.
Someone should set up a site with a database of song codes for files and make a shitload of cash from the page views. Page view whores of the world... run with it.
How long do you think it will take for a coded alternative naming system to be developed? Someone will create an index of codes that matches songs/artists and post it on the web.
Want to download the latest Metallica hit? Just go to the index site and you'll find that the code is MX459. Then hop on Napster and search for the code. They'll never be able to police this.
RTFA... the investigation was led by the FBI. I'm sure the raid was under the authority of the Swiss law enforcement. The "computer experts" were probably just added to the team to search the hard drives. Also, all they did was raid the damn ISP.
The trend is moving away from individual rights. This stuff has been going on for some time, and the marketing droids are just getting better at it. I'm sure MS uses this to "make their sites and products better" but it's a bad sign that users just don't seem to care.
Get ready for hooks in the os that work with web site tracking tools. Not far away.
Bad analogy. People do it all the time. How many rice burners do you see on the street? Bunch of idiots buy an econobox and spend 10 large suping it up so they can impress their frinds. Gotta wonder what makes some people tick...
The article missed one of the coolest elements of the overclocking phenomena. Overclockers today are like the hot rodders of the 50's and 60's. Ask them why they spend hours and dollars to crank out that extra 2-5 percent and they will look at you like you just don't get it.
There will always be a base of people who want to push their toys/hobbies to the limit. We've moved from cars to bikes to boats and now PC's.
I wonder if any research has been done as to whether the evolutionary changes brought about by this impact had similar effects as the impact that killed the dinasours. Some researchers claim that without this impact, mammals would never have become the dominant life form on the planet. It would be interesting to see how this older impact may have affected lower level life. It's rather amazing that these impacts, at just the right time could be responsible for the develpment of life as we know it.
What I find ironic is the fact that he ended up ordering a pair of shoes with another ID anyway.
This guy's dediction to the ideal he was bringing attention to obviously was not important enough to prevent him from buying from the supplier he targeted.
Sometimes the only real protest is not doing business with the company whos practices you oppose.
When did they change the plan? Last I heard, they were planning on crashing into Eros at very high speed. I seem to remember something about scanning the debris splashed upward by the collision with some type of spectrographic telescope so they could determine the composition of the asteroid.
The way around the driver issue is obvious. Apple will release a Intel box and support OSX/Intel only on Apple branded hardware.
It will also run Windows. The perfect box. People would pay a premium it. But they won't do it until there is a critical mass of solid OSX native apps.
"I've found that much of "classic" literature is just crap foisted upon generation upon generation by an elitist few..."
You have a point, but you miss the fact that the interpretation of all great literature is very subjective.
For example, I'm a big reader of Dostoyevsky. His stuff just makes sense to me. However, I'd rather host a Barry Manilow marathon than read another book by Emily Bronte.
Both appeal to different audiences. I just find the dark idealism of Dostoyevsky more interesting than the in-depth expose of the perils of provincial life as seen from a woman's perspective that seems to pervade Bronte's work.
Personally, I think you are wrong about Hemmingway and Dickens. But I don't think you could pay me enough to read Moby Dick again.
