finally we can all see what's on the mind of everyone's favorite e-butler. Jeeves, why did i see this a month ago somewhere else? Why has it taken so long to get to Slashdot? Why didn't i think to turn it in first? Why do you wear women's underwear Jeeves? What will happen next? stay tuned...same slash time, same slash channel!
This is a Really Smart Move(tm) for Adaptec because it appeals to the high end server market directly off the bat, the kind of market that would be their main customers for a while for the IA-64 AND Ultra160. Not many people will be running their Linux on Itanium chips at home at the beginning and the suits that will be running them will more than likely stuff the boxes into giant (pick your flavor here) server(s). Ultra160, coupled with the new chip AND an OS that has shown it's stability on other platforms, would be a perfect addition for serving up whatever data was needed in a timely manner.
These dead media featured aren't necessarily flops but have just been outmoded and outdated. This follows in the never ending cycle of creation. Eventually something will come along to replace what was the popular medium. Record -> Tape -> CD -> who knows what's next. Some could say holographic media some could say DVD. Either way, we find a way to replace them eventually. It reminds me of the race in Alice in Wonderland. There's no beginning or end, no losers or winner. It's just always going. muahahahaha
"...Couple that with the trillions and trillions of terabytes that would accumuliate from each and every person who had the device..."
I don't know about you, but I can remember things that happened to me when I was 5 like they just happened yesterday. Granted that humans have a selective memory (mostly subconcious), the human brain would probably be more than enough organic storage to store the information if it were retrieved by a set time limit......just try to keep those HERFs and EMPs away from your head....
I can hear it now "WILL YOU STOP TRYING TO DEGAUSS YOUR BROTHER!!!!"
This is an excellent opportunity for any fans of these awesome movies. If I had the bandwidth, I'd actively watch all of them but as it stands, I'll only dream of the day i can watch Bruce Lee kick some ass over the internet. Of course if they're all in Chinese, it's even more entertaining. Try making up your own lines to go with the scene.
I think DVD should drop the region encoding. But they never will because it will cut into sales at inflated prices and may also cut into theater time in other countries. It's all crazy but it works out so that large media corporations that produce them make the most amount of money. God bless capitalism!
I live in Mississippi with my parents when I'm not at college (insert teenage angst here). This week, they've been in Hawaii on a business trip and my father had me setup his laptiop with one of the many free ISP's that exist. I chose TheSimpsons.com because I had previously used them. After laying down an instructive text file on how he could change area codes and dial-in numbers, I got an e-mail from his Yahoo account on Tuesday. It worked great. The only hitch is that you need to have Internet access already, but if you're posting to Slashdot then there's no problem there.
why not inscribe all data into twinkies? they last forever and are held sacred in some circles already.....it's the next evolutionary trend in data storage....arranging the molecules of creme filling into bits.....twinkies could ultimately hold exabytes....woo!
i'd better run and patent that!

This isn't about idiot proofing Linux, it's about making it user-friendly. The only way Linux will become commonplace (more so than it is) is if ordinary people can use it and if it does a better job of what they need done. Sure if Linux stays mysterious and difficult to Joe SixPack, then it will remain on the outskirts of what is standard. This is what I hate about the little percentage of assholes in the "linux is sooper leet" group. They think that just because someone needs a little bit (or maybe a lot) of help with some small things that the people asking for help are automatically idiots and don't deserve the help. Ok, so maybe some people don't have the computer aptitude to install Linux and tweak it instantly on the first try. And maybe they don't grasp concepts of Linux as fast as others, but as long as they're trying to make steps in the right direction for themselves, I say "more power to ya!"
As for myself, I've tried Linux several times on different occasions and concluded that it was a neat OS to run but my Win NT box is doing everything I need it to at the moment and it hasn't crashed once since I rebuilt my computer. If Linux offered better performance over NT on most of the things I use it for, then I'd have cause to switch but as it stands Win NT suffices.
Make it user friendly for the masses but first make sure it's what they need.
Novell isn't attacking Microsoft, they're just pointing out that Microsoft gives the impression that W2K Pro and Server NEED each other AND Active Directory. They then offer, in shameless self-promotion, their own little implementation that has been used with NT 4 Workstation and Server. They're just reminding people that they have alternatives other than Micro$oft. The claims of being better just come with the self-promotion. What good is offering alternatives if there aren't any that can rival what is being pushed as a necessity?
I stand corrected as to the history of the GPL but I still contend that those who use(d) the GPL had to make the concious choice of using the GPL'd code.
God forbid someone post something that could go against the GPL. The GPL was created because someone scrutinized licenses that existed and didn't like what was around. They then created their own that suited them and others aoround them. It was so nice that millions flocked to use it. But like anything created by humans, it had errors, and probably still does. Very few people can write tight legal code, so don't get your knickers in a twist over someone having something to say about what's dear to your heart (or your code). The GPL was created so that something that was good could be made better by other scrutinizing it, so why can't the GPL apply to itself? I think if someone can find a "bug" in the GPL, then that bug can be corrected like any software bug. And under the GPL, the new fixed license would have to be shared and distributed in source form.
That's all i have to say...please direct any flames/questions/general rantings to the brick wall behind me. Thank you
Microsoft shouldn't be blamed for the exploitations of outside people. Had it been a deliberate error on Microsoft's part, maybe that would be different. As it stands, I say that the person who decided to exploit the loop hole in the software should be held responsible. With out him, such worries over errors would not exist. Should Microsoft be held accountable for the actions of every person who finds a new way to use their products against others?

As Q, the loveable inventor and mastermind behind Bond's awesome arsenal of weapons designed for him, Desmond Llewelyn charmed us, the viewers, for nearly 4 decades. His scripted innate clumsiness was the perfect foil for his scripted razor sharp genius, with each running rampant through the scenes where he shows James his latest and greatest works. He will be missed dearly by this reader and more than likely by many others. In the few moments where he was in view, Desmond Llewlyn performed immaculately. He will be remembered in the hearts of millions of loyal fans. I think he kicks ass. So should everyone else IMHO.
I use both AIM and ICQ but for totally seperate reasons. Most of my friends are either on IRC or are using AIM. I only fire up ICQ when searching for friends who choose not to use the others. I use AIM to communicate with my girlfriend mainly, but along the way have accumulated a buddy list of local friends. It allows me to talk to them. I use my ICQ for friends who are further away. IRC is for my (semi) global network of friends. I use what I use for the sole purpose of who they allow me to interact with. It might be seen as wasteful by some, but I find it pragmatic. If it ain't broke, don't fix it (but tweak if possible =D )
I personally setup a leftover system from my house for my grandfather right before I started my freshman year of college. I put Windows 95 OSR2 on it because I had assembled a computer that could run it and it seemed the simplest operating system a basic user could start with. My grandfather only needed to write, read, and print e-mails. That's all he uses it for. He's not a power user who needs the most efficient system in the world. He used it for a few weeks before he got himself a book about Win95 and he configured his computer to do just about everything he needs it to do with about 4 clicks of the mouse. He's running on a 486 SX/25 with 32 megs of ram and he hasn't complained once. His computer moves at his speed and is easily adapted to suit his needs.
