  1. There's nothing magic here on TurboLinux to Sell Wizpy Media Player Worldwide · · Score: 1

I just wanted to point out: why does nobody else provide this? A separate bootable partition can be added to (almost) any mass storage device and boot on (almost) any (modern) computer. There's no magic in here (just a LiveUSB distro), so why is this device presented as a revolution ? The same will come within OpenMoko, discussion is open: http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/Wishlist:LiveUSB_dis tro

  2. Re:Croquet? on Second Life To Open Source Server Code · · Score: 1

It may be an "old-fashioned" p2p, but SL has nothing P2P (except, maybe, internally, more something like clustering among their server farms). I'd add that croquet is considering adding DHT-based fixed/slowly-changing content delivery. The distributed router is a huge challenge too (partly related to NAT issues), but this may change in the future. As far as i know, it may be the only one computation replication peer to peer application...

Plus, croquet doesn't concentrate on massiveness, but emphasizes local collaborative islands. Just try the croquet collaborative demo, and you'll see things that make you say "hey? THIS is weird, but cool !". The MMORPG aspect may come handy on top of these islands.

    SL is appearance-driven
    Croquet is collaboration-driven

I guess the metaverse will come true when the various instances of 3D virtual worlds become interoperable.

"I'm sure you must be aware that if you don't want to use iTunes but want an iPod, there are plenty of third-party tools to copy the songs over from your HD and have them be playable." Of course. Still, you have to digg and tune and tweak etc... And what you're saying mostly applies to computer apps, not on the device itself. Why didn't i buy an ipod? Because the only *really stable* app running on the device is... itunes. Neither ipodlinux or rockbox seem really equivalent or superior in terms of features, stability, autonomy etc... Apple hardware is "sexy", but more open vendors lead to more open alternatives. That's why i use rockbox on an iaudio X5 for my daily music needs :) I was mostly criticizing the lame excuse for locking the users out.

  5. Take the network down? This is stupid on No Third-party Apps on iPhone Says Jobs · · Score: 1

All modern smartphones have a dual OS/processor/memory: - an applicative one (linux, symbian, ...), sometimes open (greenphone, ezx) - a real time one, with all phone GSM features, which is always totally closed The GSM part of the phone is connected (at least on ezx phones) to the applicative OS using USB serial, and all the intercommunication is done using AT commands. So there's no way to mess up with the GSM network, except using gprs (but if the network is correctly secured, nothing should happen in the GSM part of the net). Still, it's not a surprise that the iPhone isn't aiming at people who like freedom: you don't like iTunes? Don't buy an ipod...

Reasons? - Maybe the over-paranoic legislative and administrative system that bloats everything here (France); compare it to japan or the US... In japan, they dare adopt technologies fast? In the US, they invest. Here: they deliberate - the fu****g price we pay, everything's so expensive in here - french people are *not exactly* geeks, in fact we are 5 yrs late (in terms of products adoption), and 20 yrs late in terms of mental ability to communicate with machines

Indeed, i just wanted to say something negative ^^ What annoys me and all others europeans, is that everything happens in the US; we still have no hdtv here, so ubiquitous wifi.... Is a nice dream.

No, skype won't really be an option: EDGE has way too lenghty time responses... Push to talk at best. If it was 3G, indeed.
