No wonder SAP has such a bad reputation.
If it's overly complex then it will lead to problems.
Systems need to be made up of blocks which *can* be understood by one person. And these blocks are then put together to build bigger systems. It's the whole procipal of small, perfect tools which unix is built on.
Once you built a perfect unit you treat it as a black box and use it as a tool. i.e if I'm steering a cruise liner I just want to turn the wheel - I shouldn't have to think about operating every relay, pump, generator, control panel etc between me and the rudder.
If the central data set is not understandable then it has been designed incorrectly. Unless you want to believe the salesman that everyone else uses it and you must be too dumb to understand.
Sometimes I think that the Emporer's clothes should be required reading in the first week of all computer courses.
And if there a multi-verse then in these billions of universes intelligent life would have created virtual worlds just like we're doing.
And they are going to get very 'realistic' - imagine how good the Sims will be in 10,000 years time. The beings in it will not know they are in a universe created for them.
So - an almost infinite number of universes - many of which contain trillions of virtual worlds. This would mean that the odds are that we're in one of these 'games'.
Therefore science has proved that our universe does have a creator somewhere.
Phew! It's a relief that the whole science vs religeon thing is done with!
This makes the next choice of car easier.
Last time I asked my Dad (retired) to research a new car for us.
The only specs I laid down were:
Estate (shooting brake)
Air-con.
This will be changed to:
Estate (shooting brake)
Air-con.
Not a Toyota or Lexus.
When will these companies learn to muzzle their stupid lawyers?
Are we to infer that non-windows operating systems are unhackable? Course not - nothing is 100%.
But Windows is very easy to damage/hack compared to Linux or OS X.
Yeah, that'll last. I'll give it a week before someone finds a manual and migrates their "expertise" to their new operating system. You just don't *get it* do you. Try and install Ubuntu or buy a Dell laptop with Ubuntu pre-installed.
Then try to damage it without using sudo/root access.
It's just not possible. Please - try something other than Windows before you post on a technical news site like Slashdot.
Wonder if 2clix realise that what the combination of terrible publicity and lawyers bills have done to SCO?
Here's a wild idea for them... ummm... crazy I know but here goes....
IMPROVE YOUR PRODUCT!
Still - this is what competition is all about I suppose.
Just what does it take to get fanboys to realise that a fundementally flawed company produces fundementally flawed code.
Let me think...
Say before Vista was launched somebody said - hey, I bet this new OS is so crap it can't even copy/delete files properly. Nah, that would never happen - fundemental to an OS - they wouldn't even dare release such a piece of crap cos they would be laughed at so much.
But they have - and yet the fanboys still forgive and support MS.
What *will* it take you to change to something better?
Having bank account ripped off by phishing/viruses... nope. Costing a fortune for new hardware... nope. Loads of apps/drivers no longer working... nope. Can't copy/delete files unless you can sit there all day... still nope!!!
I beleive natural selection will eventually remove companies using MS cos they are not as efficient as companies not using MS - thank god for OSS and competition.
Software doesn't work like that. The more staff, the more bloat, the more breaking something new. At the end of the day the problem and fix have to be held in a single person's head. If the software is out of control and overly complex then this becomes impossible. Rewriting from scratch becomes the only answer.
Code needs to be elegant to work well. That's why an elegent OS like Debian can be installed on a 386 - whereas a bloated OS like Windows needs a cray to sit there and do nothing.

They've had really good support for Debian for ages. Just go to their site and search on 'Debian'.

The ads were like Vista.
1.Waste of money:
A vast waste of money at $300 million.
A vast waste of money at $5 billion.
Didn't do the basics
Didn't say what it was selling.
Can't copy or delete files.
It would have been better doing nothing.
Has made Microsoft look crap.
Apparently, it would have been better to stick to XP.
Soon to be replaced.
By new ads.
By Windows 7.
And by the way - for all those people who are saying about sticking with XP - and MS should go back to XP:
XP is CRAP.
If you think XP is good then try out Ubuntu - you will be blown away by how much faster it is to start with.
Errrmmmm... Google rankings will be affected by the fact that this story is now being so widely linked to. This is basic stuff.

What web servers are vulnerable? Been looking around but can't see anywhere anything about the type of web server being infected.
You are having a laugh!
