  1. Cogeco on How Does Your ISP Handle Top-Usage Customers? · · Score: 1

I'm using Cogeco cable in Southern Ontario, and I have a cap of 60GB (up and down combined) per month, I've gone over it several times, the first time they sent me a notice to let me know that I have gone over, but with out charges. Every other time past that I haven't gotten even an email let alone a charge. Also the service is quite good.

  2. Huh? on States Seek Laws to Curb Online Bullying · · Score: 1

Is this a joke? Someone above said that some fat chick cried because she was made fun of online. His comment was "is it too hard to block them?" or something to that effect. And he's dead right. How is this even happening? Ya, if you decide to send your picture to someone and you're ugly, you might get made fun of, so don't do it. If you get bullied in a chat room, guess what, there are a fucking million other chat rooms. In REAL life you can't just click x and go somewhere else in a second, on the internet you can. This is a NON-issue. NEXT.

  3. So what? on Canadian ISPs Send Thousands of Copyright Notices · · Score: 1

They can send as many letters as they want, hell I've got 2 of them, almost everyone I know has atleast 1. Doesn't mean shit. They send my ISP a letter that says "this ip address is a pirate, do something about it". So out of interest I call up my ISP and ask
    "What happens with this letter?"
    "Nothing."
    "Can they do anything?"
"We are not allowed to give them your name or any information."
"And will you guys do anything about it?"
"I haven't seen it happen, but you would get atleast one warning before anything serious happened."
    "Ok.... thanks."

Done. No need for proxy setup or anything. Your ISP can't give them any info, so unless you're drunk enough to email them directly to appologize/fight then you're fine.

Companies upgrade their computers bi-yearly, they get rid of all of their old computers. What's going to be different about Vista? I think that most people who want to use the Aero desktop for Vista will already have computers that can run it due to the games they play already. I am using Vista with an on board P.O.S video card, runs smoothly.

Besides the video card most computers will not need to be upgraded. Even if they do, chances are that even if they kept XP they would need to upgrade for future software bundles. I agree with the people above, this is not news, and hardly /. worthy.

  9. Vista on Windows Vista Launches To Mixed Reactions · · Score: 5, Interesting

I've been using Vista at work for just over a month now. I personally like the sidebar, not that it's anything that I couldn't have downloaded seperately anyway, but I enjoy having the CPU usage meter right on the side, along with a calender, the weather and a currency converter. I do not have Aero installed since this computer would not handle it, nor would I want to use it even if it could. The operating system itself has not crashed on me, and it has run suprisingly smoothly. I've got everything I need for work installed without a problem. There is one thing that drives me absolutely mental though ... in the windows explorer there is no "up" button, and back does not do the same thing, and yes, I am aware that I can just hit backspace, but when I'm in "mouse only" mode, this does not cut it.

I like the added shortcuts (ie windows key+0-9 to launch quick launch programs) but I hate having to use the "search" method in control panel to find the things that should be in the obvious spots. Also the defrag is terrible, while the command line version is significantly better, I would still like a visual display of what is going on.

All in all though, it has worked for me quite well at work, however it will be a long time before I would use it at home, it's simply not worth the money IMO.

  10. Douchebags on Professors To Ban Students From Citing Wikipedia · · Score: 1

"You mean there are Profs that accept papers citing Wikipedia? Wait a minute, this story must be a joke because when I looked up Middlebury University on Wikipedia, it said it said the college went bankrupt and was closed... For four years it has been my policy to give an F to any student paper that uses Wikipedia as a academic source (students may cite it as a source of folk knowledge). But I go much further than this, sometimes I project wikipedia above me and enter convincing but bogus information into existing entries (change dates, killing spouses, or adding the influence of tidal forces of Visigoths or plagues throughout history) to show students why they shouldn't trust this public graffiti board. Believe me, not even Mott the Hopple is safe..." ^ Comment From TFA It's douche bags like this who fuck up wikipedia. Not only does he change it to screw his students, but then anyone else who checks out that site.

The users who know Windows very well can get any program they need to do for free, they know what they need and what will do it. There is TONS of free software for Windows. It's easy to use, and it's cheap, what's the problem? If Windows crashes on you all the time then you've screwed up, either installed software that's crap or something else. Someone mentioned Vista, I've been using it at work for a month now, and it hasn't crashed once. The hardware for windows is cheap too, I can buy a used computer for 150 bucks that will run windows 2k and all the software I need. What would a $150 mac do? Nothing.
