If I were MS, I would do exactly that. Or more likely, just start up my own brand new company.
One of the market influnences that will help OSS "beat" MS is that a OS license from MS is getting to be close to the largest single cost of building a computer. See Walmart and Lindows..
Extending that further if MS starts selling computers then they can put whatever they want on the desktop right? No more AOL installs. Service and support contracts everywhere!
Unfortunatly the reality of the compiler world is that everything has there own unique extensions to ANSI-C. And for that matter, there own unique bugs related to there implementation of ANSI C as well.
Any peice of software as large, complex, and critical, as a OS kernel is going to, at the very least, be tested agianst a specific compiler. Linux was developed primarly with free tools, ie GCC. So Linus and his cohorts have taken the test-on-gcc mindset one step further and used GCC extensions.
So what? What do they loose? No functionality, they could implement things in ASM if need be, so convience. And convienent things are probabaly understandable things, and understandable things mean less buggy code.
If people never used compiler extenstions, then you would never have to run./configure:)
I dont know about CDs being readable for decades, at least not necessaraly cheeply. Look around for a record player tomorrow...

IDE RAID Examined

True, but both cheep IDE drives and expensive SCSI drives are cheep compared to something like a 7133 Serial Disk System today. And especially cheep compared to "enterprize" storage solutions of yesteryear when RAID was coined.
If they have the CC in there hands and swipe it they get the Track 2 data which is sent to the clearinghouse (and reduces there CC charge rate accordingly). I would imagine that CC companies would be discouraging collection of AVS data by merchants who dont use it because it increases the chance that a break in would distribute enough information to make a fradulant transaction.
Part of the "problem" with the UNIX world is the rampant Not My Problem Syndrome. No one says "the buck stops here"... One of the reasons why, ie, BeOS, was a good OS was because everyone was under one roof. At the end of the day they goal was to produce a good OS.
While modularity is a good thing it brings with it the Not My Problem Syndrome. Window manager teams blame X. X blames window managers. Everyone blames libc. Kernel hackers blame driver writers. Driver writers blame hardware manufactures.
As much as it pains me to say it - and trust me, it pains me a lot to flatter them - the French have the words down. The free-as-in-beer and free-as-in-speech is because English only has "free", whereas French has "libre" and "gratis". Most non-US speekers would pick up on that in context, but unfortunatly/. is US-centric and the US is US-centric...
You can download for free (no cost) mp3 encoders and mp3 decoders. Some of them are produced by people/companies who own or have licensed the specific algorthims for en/decoding. Some of the free (no cost) programs are no longer free, or shortly wont be because the companies who own the underlying technologies are going to start charging for its use. Im sure that some big companies will continue to make no cost players. Binary, closed source players. I doubt that any opensource project could license the technology - it would cost big money and likey requre that it not be distributed in source form.
But Im sure that free (beer) players will remain aviable.
Ogg on the other hand is compleatly free, open, and unpatented. There are closed source players and open source players. Whatever the end product might charge, the underlying technology is free.
So, with mp3 en/decoders the underlying technology is closed, and all (future) players will be closed, if possibly free to get.
Ogg en/decoders might charge you money for it and might be closed. But the underlying technology is free and open, so there almost definitly will always be free and open programs.
While I cant speek to the specific requirements of the parent poster, Im sure he wants/needs the features of photoshop and not the warm and fuzzy feeling of using "Photoshop". Which means that he wants/needs the features of modern versions of PS. I dont know the last UNIX version of PS, but its probably at least 2 major version out of date.
"I followed the spec/docture/manual" would be a valid defence if admins were proscuited after these types of indicents. So then the spec/docture/manual would be at fault, and the person who wrote them (or diddnt as there all painfully out of date).
But there is an entire US government agency, 50% of there mandate is to secure signals.
Did he strike terror into your heart? No. Then hes not a terrorist. Had you not been on/. tonight you would never even have know about him. Not very scarry. Definitly not terrifing.
Actualy, by definition, you couldnt be more wrong.

I consiter myself resonably well tuned into the computer/IT/geek sceen, but I have to admin to for a long time conciously filteing out any news of Java - probabaly since 1.1. About 8 months ago I tried and after a week was margionaly sucuessfull (not all either Suns or my fault..) installing a "enterprise" class Java application. A major part of the problem was getting the right (out of date) JRE.
So could someone please explain to me the magic word that I apparently need to know to get what I would have though would be a "Get Java Here" button click away to download the right JRE? Neither "jre" or "jre" exist on the front of java.sun.com
Uh:
#/sbin/chkconfig kudzu off
You are allowed to manualy configure nice automated systems as well. And while kudzu is of questionable worth (I always turn it off, its especially annoing with machines that may or may not have mice attached..) I think that it is a prime example of Making Easy Things Easy And Hard Things Possible.
Thats simple. Ticket price has nothing to do with cost. Set the price to what the market will bear.
oh.. nevermind.
The configure script for mrtg claims to order CD's for the primary author a few times while beeping loudly.

How so? Has the webmaster or forum moderator downloaded the source code and agreed to the license? Not necessaraly, and probabaly not at all.
Except of course any device made since, say 1989 resamples the digital signals anyway so jitter isnt an issue.
He said without cost. QT costs money for other platforms. GTK is free everywhere.

But there is not one root server, there are a bunch of them. Geographicly and networkly distributed.

All of the algorithms for en/decoding mp3's are patented, and thus subject to licensing. Not so with ogg.
BIND with sufficently smart people to maintain it and keep it up to date.
