This is the problem with the system that I first though of.
For the dozen or so other people who have seen the Avro Arrow movie, reacll that it was the first fly by wire plane. The initial controls had no resistance, and the pilots complained.. The engineers devised some kind of system where there was some kind of feed back..
You would think that when one of the major advances of the Canadaarm recently is giving it the ability to 'feel' there aware of the problem thought...
The license itself is copyright the FSF, and the FSF asks that you release the copyright to them (because there as evil as anyone else), but GPLd software isnt necessaraly FSF/GNU copyrighted/
Hackers always seem to forget this side of the story. He was explicitly told not to persue what he was doing, and he continued. Chargind him with a crime might have been a little overboard, but its not like he diddnt do anything wrong.
This is the kind of thing where you are going to have to spend some money. Probabaly lots of money.
I feel compeled to point out Novell Groupwise.. It has docoment management capabilities... Since it inegrates with a pretty decent email/calandering/colloberation system as well. The things youve mentioned are almost definitly better for pure document management, but GW has other desirble features as well.
Well, email relaying is usualy a service thats bundled with internet access, and is perfectly fine. This hypothetical ISP probably should update there terms of service, but if there getting screwed, its there fault.
As for hijacking some random mail server on the internet, thats a different issue. Thats unacceptable, probabaly illegal, and with a doubt immorial.
And you call us ignorant. Who do you think pays for all the bandwidth that spammers use on the Internet backbone? ISPs. Who do you think pays for those ISPs? Us ISP users.
You dont think spammers connect to the internet? Are they not also paying for bandwidth? I do some consulting work for a company that has done a lot of spamming in the past. They currently have a 10Mbit/sec connection to the net. And there paying commercial prices for it.
A lot of spam is porn related. And porn sites have pictures. And movies. And Sound. And live movies. That takes up a lot of bandwidth. And bandwidth cost money. Probabaly a lot more then your mom and pop ISP pay.
Im sure you know that aliasing has something to do with graphics. Not even knowingwhat a gaming console is is on par with not knowing what a washing machine is. You might not have one, and you might not want to have one, but you know what one is.
AS I recall there was a bit of discussion on the console issue, so his confusion was more then just off the cuff confusion. And it was email anyway. RMS diddnt know what gaming consoles were.
My point is that he is out of touch with reality. Yes he has made some significant technical contributions. But I realy couldnt see me aligning with him, even if I did think the GPL was the best license.
Incedently, I dont own a game console, and havent even playd one in years.
A few months back there was a post on/. about someone developing a crossplatform game developement library. He had engaged in a email conversation with RMS over some licensing issues; free libraries on top of closed libs.
One of the (possible) platforms discussed was one of the gaming consoles. RMS diddnt know what they were, and was confused at why someone would want one.
He was either being factious, or he actualy dosent know what a gaming console is. The later makes him out of touch with reality, and the former indicates that he thinks he is above the common man. Either way, not a good thing.
Well, if they are selling something at a loss for the purpose of fucking there competition, that price dumping and its illegal. (note that lost leaders and the like are legal)
You should contact your authorities, or if you feel compeled, just sue them yourselves.
I diddnt mean that the construction of a space elevator would cause the depletion of our resources (though it might:).
My point is that in the future minerals and ores will be harder to get on earth, and we will be performing some extra-testeral mining, possibly on mars. And to get the rock of mars, a space elevator might be more economical then rocketry. And you dont need a elevator on this end, as getting things down is easy.
At the unspecified point in the future when well be capable of building a space elevator, earths resources will be getting sparce. Or under populated areas. Or in range of endagered species. Whatever.
A space elevator on mars would significantly decrease the cost of shipping materials back from mars.. Getting materials into space is the expensive part of the trip. Earths gravity will provide all the energy needed to get stuff down. And if your willing to wait long enough, the mars-earth part would be pretty cheep to.. So a inplace space elevator would decrease orbiting costs to close to nothing when its running..
Another alternitive to having just an add/subtract moderation system where it sorts by total, is to do it by average.
Actualy, you could do it in two dimentions; up/down being good/bad and left/right being ontopic/offtopic, and then slash could render a little map showing where the post falls!.
Your at least as confused as the person your complaning about.
There is a difference beteween the "personal computer market" and the "corporate software market".
The internet services that OSS does so well cuts into MSs coportate sector because the industry in general is moving to internet delevery of data. The new release of Samba will definitly have an effect on NT/2000 sales, especialy in the smaller office.
But, on the other hand, 'normal' consumers still all in all are using MS stuff at home.
Of commody, standard components, sure. Exactly. Thats the point.
Microsoft it making this argument from the perspective of (duh) a software company. And yes, OSS, and GPL software does very much undermine some practical aspects of IP.
But, the world is bigger then just software companies. Software is infastructure, and infastructure design must be open so that it can be inspected and independently verified. Putting 'freedom' and politics asside, software needs to be independently verified and approved for safety and reliability reasons.
This independent review could be done by something like a government agency, UL/CSA/ASA etc with a pool of 'anti-virgins' (in the reverse engineering sense), but moving to OSS satisifies this, and is the logical extreem.
Personaly, I realy dont care about having the source code, but knowing that my apps (well, the big, important ones) have had good independent peer review lets me sleep at nights. (well usualy, insomnia tonight...)
Well, if the movie Serpico is accurate, at the time (early 1970s) cops went home after they made an arrest. Street cops were expected to make one arrest a shift, no more no less..
I was a devoute C=64 fan, and diddnt get a pc until a 286 basicly dropped into my lap. And there wasent a good reason to do so until then (286 and VGA) either. Im generaly convinced that CBMs marketing division was one dunk guy in a basement.
To quote the Jargon Dictionary: If you want to play in the Real World, you need to learn Real World moves.
That may be true, but its also true of other, more traditional systems as well.
Things that quicly come to mind, are the phone network (build it, switches are desigined to last 20 years, and just provide power, and you done...), and hydro power (build a dam, install a turbine and a generator and youve got free electricity in the spring forever...).
And it also works for non 'network' like services... R&D costs for pharmicitals is high, but the per unit manufacture cost is low as an example.
Your argument seems to be that the price of things should be related to the cost of production. In a market driven system the price of things is related to what the market can bare. If that greater then the cost of the item, the company stays alive. And if its less, the company dies.
Right now the goind theroy is that the price the market can bare is $0 for these online services. When the free services either die, or are forced into some kind of payment, the high quality content will dry up.
It remains to be seen weather or not the maket can bare a non-zero price on these things...
4.x was out and on production machines well before this four year period. The 3.x release that would have been out would be 3.12 at best, which istn y2k compliant, 3.2 is, and thats less than 4 years old.
Of course they could have upgraded the OS while it was in the wall..
There is a problem with selling a update service like this a as component of a boxed set. Namely, boxed sets and physcial mediums are on there way out.. Getting rid of physcial mediums is part of what makes this such a good idea.
Why would RH (or anyone) go down a business model that everyone knows will have to change in a couple of years?

As for floppies/zip's, there would of course still be the ability to save files outside of the repository.

He anwsered your question. It works fine for voide grade, but nothing above that..

Floppys suck, and shouldt be used. Period. And especialy not by employees to install software.
Since someone, even a poorly paid peion has to at least look at the letter, then your not only spamming them, you DDoSing them..

Everything is still there, moderation is simply a automated, massive, editoral system. All the speach is still there.
