Windows has this need to have a 8 bit subnet mask with a class A network.
We have a 16 bit subnet mask (255.255.0.0) with 10.x.x.x addresses for our offices. Our VPN server is Linux, hands out ips and all. Our windows clients assume that everything 10.x.x.x is on the other end of the tunnel... this has really caused minor problems Win2k RRAS at one office, but otherwise, its not really a problem, It's kind of a feature.
I personally see no problems with the using of 10.x.x.x addresses with windows, but if your using 10.x.x.x addresses on two sides, id say be prepared for problems. From experence, I would perfer to use anything but windows for routing data. I think Linux 2.4 might be interresting to see on routers, but I have not the time to see. Windows is a very poor choice for routing data.
This whole thing is not even funny at all, We have known for ages that Windows did not create Random port numbers or Random ISNs, So why fret about it now?
This whole thing was brought up about two years ago. Microsoft Never saw the need to randomize the ISN's or the Port usages. That is, I beleave against the spec these days. Linux I belave has a fully to the spec TCP/IP Stack. The thing is, this is all VERY old news.
In response to Win98, It does not use an ip as an authenticator, Windows in general does not use an ip as an authenticator, but it does use Machine Accounts in NT, oh this is from X machine, oh ok, Its good. Win98's only service is really File and printer sharing. In win9x, its basiclly the same as samba set to SHARE instead of USER. People sharing their c:\ is what all those vbs worms are hunting for......
.... but teenagers need lives, they need to develope emmotionally, and socially. This kind of stuff restricts that development.
Let us not forget, that teachers often give better grades to children who are known to be on redilin. I worked as a camp counsulor last summer, nine of my twelve kids were on redilin, Only three of them really needed it, and then, only one was REAL bad.
A curfew is not the way, teenagers will just ignore it. The state of North Carolina tried to enact a curfew for teenagers driving, slowly, it went from no driving after 9 pm on the permit, to no driving after 9pm automaticlly on provisional lisences for teenagers. What has happened with this? Nothing, Parents, and Police ignore it. How are they supposto enforce it anyway, profile? pull over random cars? arrest teenagers buying ink for their printers at the local walmart? arrest teenagers for going home from work? They cannot enforce it without infrindging the rights of adults.
Companies won't go with products from companies that are late, and who admittly admit, that they fucked up. Apple, with Jobs at the helm, has a tendancy to fuck up in short. As soon as they made Jobs the CEO again, everything started taking longer to get to market, a degradation in product quality, and of what people expected.
Besides, we all know windows lovers will never touch that evil thing called unix!
First, I think they need to take the linux jfs support to equil ground with the AIX version (where file names dont have just one case, they have diffrent cases in their names).
Second, I'm Sure both samba projects could use all the Server Message Block docs they have, and maybe some code from the kernel.
Third, I think they could help on the user enviroment, maybe get XF to another level, or release their own X-Server.
Forth, I've only seen AIX running once, on a RS/6000 in a friends basement, but I'm sure they must have some useful apps they could work on, and port, maybe office tools, network admin tools, snmp monitors.
Fifth, I think we should give linux, and various apps that are nearly synonious with linux more features, and better support, so that ibm can better use it. IBM shoots hevely twards state contracts (schools) where they think win95 is the only os in town for workstations, and Netware 3.x/5 is the only thing that can share files.
Sixth, I think ibm should give us some wisdom, and lots of caffine. Perhaps the computing time and systems so that people could better develop some of this stuff.
I remember maybe.... 6 or 8 months ago, One of the Security Focus listserves had a decussion about realtime blacklists and weather they should be used, I remember reading several opinions that said stuff like this would happen, it seems they were right..
There are also several windows worms. I see requests from windows boxes all over the world to port 137 on my masquerading firewall. Most computers that request to port 137 on my firewall, are just random systems out on the net.
You can probilly find info on the worms at www.securityfocus.com
First of all, the reason it's not in CVS is so that the code base can be controled. So some evil hax0r from Microsoft can't go and make it mutate like their ads in germany clame that linux will do. Besides that, The decision is up to Linus, If he wants to move it into CVS, thats his choice, but I think it would be a bad idea.
Two, Win2k is not all that stable. My Win2k laptop has just frozen from time to time, and youc can still get BSODs from just using Win2k, Though they are much more rare.
I have several things I also dislike about Win2k:
- It goes to some ip address starting with 169 when your dhcp server lease runs out. It also has this tendecy to crash my ISC DHCPd, Yet I haven't bothered to sniff the conversation yet.
- IPSec is a bitch to get working with free/swan
- I have found that IE 5 and IE 5.5 on win2k have this tendency to grind the system to a halt within 3 hours of it being booted in some cases.
I admit, I like the fact that it has IPSec, PPTP, and L2TP support built in. I beleave that Win2k is designed for telecommuters.
Oh, Did I forget to mention that Win2k is a memory hog, It's kernel is 28 megs when running, and they call it a microkernel:) (The kernel on my exchange server at work is 26 megs when running)

Yes, LW is a MCSE, Though he hates Microsoft Products, they have their uses, like making a system for only one person at a time, and slowing work down so Network/Systems Administrators can sleep peacefully in their cubicals w/o any overhead florecent lighting.
BTW, What kind of code can we now type into our messages? C? C++? Perl? Pascal? god forbid vbscript
Kids will naturally drift to non-ms compilers due to the cost of microsoft compilers and all. All we need to do is hype egcs to them, and they will first try it out using cygwin, and maybe try unix, because as we all know, cygwin is for strictly porting:)
-LW
I wonder how many 17 year olds like my self are MCSEs....
I once spoke with one of my father's friends when I was visiting him, and she told me that when she was stopping over in the Falklands on her way to Antartica, and she told me that one of the most amazing things that she ever saw was when thousands of penguins fell over when watching harriers on manuvers. I remember that a few years back about some enviromentalists went down there and threw a hissy fit about it all. I don't remember what came about of it.
you have to remember that the protesters were string up paino wire up just high enouf that it could do some serious damage to somebody who happened to come in contact with the wire
thats why the copys in phili came down soo hard on the protesters, they asked for it in short, and they got what asked for
We have to remember the nature of explosives. Dynimite blows out in a liniar fassion, while a nuclear blast goes in all directions, vaporizing rock, and fragmenting rock with the shock wave. Go look at the pictures of the underground tests in Navada, where you see the shockwave and the ground rises up, and then falls in.
I would think that this is a more of an attempt in population control or genecide, perhaps that nuclear device will acidently distroy Tiwann, or kill off a good number of chinses people.
anyway
if memory serves, newer versions of IOS allow you to get the dumb wintel boxen to browse off their segment w/o wins.... i dont remember how it works.

Also, Block ad banners, they eat lots of bandwidth... somebody sent me a email on this a while back... email me if you want it...
