1/4 second or even 1/2 second is probably just fine for most users. I haven't seen the clock, but I don't believe it even goes into single-second resolution. There are also more local sources for retrieving the actual current time for their server(I'm pretty sure the main time authority is in Greenwich), and the transit time shouldn't be relevant if it at least provides an accurate time from the moment it receives the request.

As much as people may be too stupid for not using their on-board computer(often set with internet time, ensuring accuracy and making BBC 'time checks' irrelevant), the way BBC is characterizing the task of providing an accurate, global clock is just plain wrong. It is actually not that difficult of a task if you look at what needs to be done.

    1. Grab time from NTP (possibly scrape it from a NIST website or something)
    2. Translate to local time(user log-in with TZ prefs, or default to GMT)
    3. Display it.

If the coders they have working on the site can't manage that, they sure as fuck shouldn't be working for one of the world's largest news agencies running their website.

It's only 'legal practice' because Japan outright ignores the moratorium the other countries in the IWC agreed upon. Basically, Japan just says "We don't want to join your club so we don't have to follow its rules". They also lie, and lie, and lie about how they are hunting whales exclusively 'for research'. I think the fact that they can't sell their (nasty, fatty) whale meat also contradicts their claim that "It's a Japanese tradition and people love it".

Every Japanese person I asked whether they would eat whale said something like "” or "no way, whale is nasty". I think it's time to hang it up for good, ICR. It's also the best way to put an end to functionally-retarded morons like Paul Watson.

I knew this was true since forever (EULAs and contracts have always been over-reaching and awful), but I just recently started to take action against it. I recently canceled a phone plan and my former cable contract after I got notices that the terms had been updated, and contacted them to tell them I didn't agree to the changes. Their response was pretty much "Oh well, go somewhere else then". So I did. I now have a far cheaper, less evil cell phone plan, and my cable service has no contract or termination fees.

There is always an option to do away with companies that disregard your rights. It's always worth finding the other option, and it's the only way these giant monopolizing bastards will ever learn: when their customers start leaving in the thousands.

We recently cancelled our business internet/phone with them, because they were adding on all sorts of 'additional value-added services' without even asking us(totaling hundreds per month), and our bills were(without the charges from these services) more than double what we were told they would be when we signed up. I have heard from several other people that this is the case for them as well - not sure if it's a regional thing, but everyone I asked was in the Midwest.

They have no respect for regulation, the law, or common decency, and the sooner that former-monopoly branch of an evil empire implodes, the happier I will be. Unfortunately, the only way this will happen is if you - the consumers - vote with your feet and stop allowing them to do this to you.

That is incredibly ignorant. No, women were NOT being 'discriminated against'. There just weren't anywhere near as many women applicants. The tech sector is rife with complaints about the lack of women, and yet, women go into technical fields and apply for jobs in that area a fractional percent as often as men do.

If you have a pool of applicants, hire the most qualified ones. If women are pissed they weren't chosen, they should work harder and get better at what they do so they will be chosen the next time. It's better than complaining that they didn't get the job due to lack of a penis.

If there is any evidence of impropriety or discrimination, that shit should be dealt with immediately. Short of that, don't hire based on gender or race. Hire based on ability.

On the other end of the spectrum you get such gems as the officers who pull their service weapon during traffic stops because they think everyone wants to kill them because of the uniform.

Lately, some of the arrests/videos/incidents I have seen make me question whether some of these cops should be allowed to drive, much less enforce laws and carry weapons. It seems like instead of safety and peace of mind police like to tote their guns as bolt-on confidence, and love to wave them around for whatever reason they can find.

I would feel a whole lot safer with a well-practiced civilian carrying a gun than the boys in blue who have only the department's weapons training to work with. At least your average civilian isn't going to shoot you unless you start shooting first. Police don't have the same prerequisites to shoot people, and will be let off the hook for just about any shooting, no matter how unjustified. Their trigger finger is especially itchy when they think their uniform makes them a target and everyone is out to get them.

    Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
