None of them are truly bipedal AND look humanoid with everything down to facial expressions, and any bipedal robot is unstable at best. I can imagine it would be far worse to have a walking robot fall over and not get up than it would be to have it just remain seated.
I'm pretty sure the cables are just power, audio, and pneumatic air to drive the movement actuators.
It seems like for whatever reason, Japan doesn't trust foreigners to respect its traditions. In doing so, they completely disrespect the foreigners without giving them a chance. It's nearly a no-win situation with the only viable solution being to maintain a work visa for long enough to marry someone Japanese (and then wait some more) or just wait it out long enough to be granted citizenship (often 10 years or more).
Even this won't often stop the prejudice like "No Foreigner" shops and restaurants, or extensive police profiling based on race. God forbid you're white and you walk through Akihabara at 4AM...
If you watch further (and maybe understand some of what the director is saying) the android *IS* voice controlled.
There is plenty of work in Japan going toward speech processing both inbound and outbound. Vocaloid was an accidental discovery while trying to synthesize realistic human voice for an android.
Japan has a problem getting its next generations to take care of the previous aging generations that need assistance, so they are turning to robots to take over this niche. There are actually many domestic helper-bots already in service, and a majority of them respond to voice commands.
I would imagine that to make this practical or efficient, it would rely on the sun to activate it during the day and continue glowing at night.
I'm curious if this reaction is like a glowstick, where if it's a hot day it glows brighter and shorter, but on cold days it will glow dimly for a lot longer.
I've had an original 360 for years and years and years, and I still have no idea what that was all about. Mine doesn't even get particularly warm - proper ventilation and care goes a long way.
I have never even had a glitch with it, in fact, aside from one non-reproducible graphics error in Fallout 3.
I have to say, this seems a little underwhelming. Two companies that most people have all but forgotten, now forever together in their techno-obscurity.
It pains me to see people who think free speech is extended to politicians lying to voters, any more than it is to people swearing on national television or expressing their speech through the form of a program on the internet.
Bullshit is bullshit.
Either it's all acceptable, or none of it is. When you start selectively saying "Yes, THIS speech is free, but THAT speech isn't!" you get in the really deep shit that nobody enjoys dealing with.
Discovery News has a great site. I had to keep refreshing to see all the potential "Discovery news...wants to ____________" headlines that pop up when it loads.
Why do science journals insist that they somehow can't be taken seriously if they use pictures? Would it kill them to show us the fish, the cave, or the people doing this? Anything but a TL;DR block of text.
Those who have it are the majority, those who don't are the minority. I'm sorry Big Steve was so butthurt that he couldn't get an agreement working with Adobe for his iToys and Flash. The fact is that if you want to reach the most people possible with rich web content, Flash is the current solution. HTML5 is iffy and buggy, and JavaScript is slow and old.
Jobs and Apple want to decry Flash and say "It's a hog, it's inferior!" but they have yet to propose one acceptable substitute. "Turn it off and browse with static images only, 90s-style!" is not the answer I'm looking for.
That's similar to FF's new 'IPC Plugin Container' thing. It launches a second process to run Flash, Silverlight, and other web-media. It's poorly implemented, so it was a relief that you can disable it entirely in about:config. I haven't seen any performance or battery issues on my PC since.
That article about all of this awesome tech in a sweet facility...and the only picture they can muster up is a generic panorama of some foothills? I want to see caves full of servers! I want to see giant ice sheets being melted for the purpose of cpu cooling!
100% agree. Over-advertising and super pushy ads are more likely to make me NEVER buy/use the product than to ever actually buy or use it.
If you REALLY want to avoid things like ad-block plus, host the ads on local content servers for the site the person is visiting, and don't put them in a separate ad directory. AdBlock Plus works by blocking whole directories and trees of a domain which are responsible for hosting/serving the ads. If your ads are intermingled with the media the person is TRYING to view, they won't be able to block the ad directory without also blocking the desired content along with them.
That said, please don't abuse this. I will happily never visit your site again if you somehow bypass AdBlock Plus with talking/noisy/animated ads that push themselves on me. If there's a relevant banner ad, I may just click it. I am actually a consumer - I buy things I need/want. I just don't want shit I don't need or want forced down my throat every time I go to watch a video or read the news.
This is why I stopped watching TV and Hulu - they got too greedy with the ads. No more.
For reference: "Wapuro Baka" is a phrase that means 'Word Processor Stupid'. This describes someone who can write in Japanese on a computer by typing the Romaji (English letter) sound-only syllables, but cannot write the harder meaning words by hand because they do not know the symbols in detail.
The offended parties voluntarily read his comments of their own free will, from a site which they do not own or administrate, which isn't even located in a country governed by the laws which you described.
The problem is that this sets a dangerous precedent. Pretty soon, you'll have to watch what you say on the internet for fear that it might offend someone and then the cops will come knocking. Everyone on 4chan will be screwed.
Just because the person offended was bereaved and the offense was directed at a deceased party does not mean there should be any sort of exceptional limit to what is legally acceptable. This is quickly spiraling into China-sized censorship.
So free speech is well and good, and should be protected...until you disagree with it? Somehow I don't think that's how it's supposed to work. Under your description, anyone who was offended by something said to them could claim it was 'harassment' and try to file charges. Do you really want the world to suck that bad?
It's generally expected that you will have to put up with a certain level of minor harassment on a day-to-day basis. On the internet, you should expect that level to rise by default. The anonymity of an internet message is quite appealing to people, and often results in them not self-censoring as much as they might in a real-world encounter. The fact that the police have the ability to actually act on it is frightening to say the least.
I'm very happy laws like this haven't quite made it into the US. This is the sort of threat we're facing with all of this 'Cyber Bullying' legislation they are trying to pass. Fight it. Vote it down. Do your duty to protect the constitution. It is the parents' responsibility to protect their children, not the government's.
If you're a grown-ass adult, you should have a tough enough skin that you don't need to have people ARRESTED for trolling you on the internet. If you can't manage, turn off the computer. Nobody's forcing you to surf Facebook or forums. You CHOSE to be there and read what people wrote.

Why do they need incentives?
How about the incentive not to lose their connection to the internet?
Why does everyone 'deserve' something for conforming to a technology standard? Shit or get off the pot.
1943 called.
The Nazis want their laws back.
Every phone I've ever purchased through my Verizon plan has been available for full price without contract.
I assume this is because VZW knows that whether or not I buy the contract, it will only work on their network.

...is to stop using IE for anything. It's a garbage browser.
Why would anyone use it when there's so many higher-quality free alternatives? Firefox? Chrome?
Just let it die.

At least the story was interesting....this time.

Nah, QuickTime doesn't suck battery life, it just sucks.
I don't think I've found a single build that didn't somehow bog down Windows or cause some sort of crash. Better to just leave QuickTime to the Macs.

This is how I became so completely wapuro-baka...

Yes, because Unicorns exist! And Fox uses their horns to punch DVD holes!
I'mma chargin' by LAAAASEEEEERS!
Darn...and here I thought this was going to be an article on the OSI Network model...
