What you can't play 3d monster maze on your Cray? Why not? I know for a fact you can play Quake on a Cray do why not 3d monster maze.
With repect to the topic at hand I personally don't play with s/390s on a daily basis busis but allowing your mainframe (if you already have one for your SAP/Peoplesoft stuffs) to function as a web server as well is smart strategy in leveraging existing resources. Bringing linux to the high end computing market is probably important than some of the other features we linux freaks has been clamouring for because those computers have sufficient omph to do mission critical apps. By the way I want a s/390;-)
"The only thing I can think of that is as silly is the Fax machine"
I handle a large quantity of legal documents which must be signed by various parties for a large real estate management firm. Usually we only have two choices in the time frame needed to close the deal: 1. Fax the document to each party and then get the document faxed back with the requisite signatures. 2. Rack up the FedEx bill by sending the document to each person to sign and then send on to the next person who needs to agree to the contained clauses. Usually we do this on documents that need to be notarized.
The fax machine saves us hundreds of dollars a month in shipping expenses plus we do not have to scan in existing paper documents to send them to our clients (ever try scaning a couple thousand pages to send to the IRS for an audit?) From a legal perspective the fax machine is invaluable and streamlines our operations both with our customers and investors.
I applaud CMU for trying to recruit at institutions which are good in math, science instead of lowering the standards. It also should change the balance of females here in technical programs to a reasonable level instead of the ridiculous level that it used to be. However using verbal SAT to recruit people into CS is just plain stupid i'll admit I got an 800 verbal but it only shows a large vocabulary not the creativity to solve a programming problem.
As stated in a previous Slashdot article on the Mindcraft fiaso (I believe by a Samba employee) he stated that the test although obviously biased based on credibility was a usefull source for NT administrators for tuning optimally. The truth is many administrators of NT servers don't have one good source for tuning tips to increase uptime, speed, or whatever.
We in the Linux and Unix community should not approach this test as necessary to defend the honor of our favored OS but as a way to get information on how to tune our own servers.
My guess is NT will come out ahead because of its RAID support and ability to bind network cards to acheive very large pipes as the four network cards in the Dell PowerEdge can acheive 300-350Mps. For running application servers which are not used for web-serving or external applications probably a quad-Xeon with NT although bloated is extremely useful. However Solaris-based Office servers although equally expensive and semi-counterintuitive appear to handle both intranet and internet tasks with less burden.
We should appreciate that Mindcraft for free is providing us with valuable information on tuning Linux servers. However if you are running a massively parallel system probably Linux is not the right choice as an OS. Even a microsoft "win" should not be considered a loss for the community. I applaud Mindcraft for attempting to retry their tests with the tuning suggestions of us in the Linux Community.
Linux tuning information can be difficult to find and the Mindcraft retest may allow us to improve the usage of more mainstream servers and clients. Remember that losing a battle does not always imply that the war will be lost.
I'm a senior in high school so the end of the tunnel is well within light however the abuse though the years has been ridiculous. Not only do the teachers look the other way when students such as myself are shoved across the hall into metal lockers with the perpretrators are laughing but they also tolerate nonstop verbal abuse from the popular kids during classes.
It is this double standard that allows us i.e. the geeks to be persecuted to the maximum while the instigators run free. Frequently the students who will be the most overt troublemakers will be the children of these condescending educators. I cannot count the number of times I have received back essays with the comments "overly verbose" or "do not try to impress me with words." It utterly confounds me why teachers who i'm sure have lower SAT and IQ scores than I do (1560 and 170 respectively) behave as if they are omniscient benefactors.
The sentiments expressed by the media which you have repeated in this article that cliques are destructive but "a part of growing up," a direct quote from todays Washington Post illustrates that school administrators are in a dreamworld detached from the realities of the public school system.
The reality is that physical and mental conditioning such as performed in the public schools is not dissimilar from Brave New World. Except in the public schools the Alpha Double-Pluses are placed below the Deltas. The problem is particularly acute in non-gifted classes where intellectualism is frowned upon and conformism is the goal.
Alienation by the intellectual elite is a natural occurance of poor management of violence.
i have tested a dual pII/400 with pretty similar specs in Linux: 3COM 905 10/100 onboard SCSI on Gigabyte Motherboard 256 megs of RAM 9 gig Quantum SCSI hard drive
The results were about 20% above the quotted figures for the quad xeon. Perhaps i'm wrong but my $1649 system shouldn't be faster than a $25,000 system. Linux SMP is not nearly as stunning as BeOS SMP. Is there issues in Linux with 4 gigs of RAM slowing down the system last I checked Samba only supports 2 gigs.
By the way the Mindcraft config favored NT quite obviously by using NTFS file system and Raid 0, which should alone roughly double HD access speeds.
In the corporate community it is important to have NAME RECOGNITION. When I approached my boss with switching from M$ Windows 98/NT to a unix based system it was he who suggested Red Hat. Due to aggressive marketing Red Hat at least has name recognition with the pointy-haired Dilbert-esque boss. We in the linux community should not view the company as public enemy number one for supplying support to newbies and selling a package distro in the stores next to M$ windoze.
Think twice before bashing a company for trying to make money on an OS. Personally I usually use Solaris at work and FreeBSD at home but by attracting new people to the flock the folks at Red Hat should be congratulated. Even if you believe your boss could accomplish more work with an Etch-A-Sketch if he uses linux that's one less dollar in Bill's pocket
Not only were they good friends but Lucas based starwars on the premise of a monomyth (an idea of Joseph Cambell) The intent of both the Star Wars and Dune series were to create modern myths.

More female CS majors is good

I want one for my home! Burn any 5 songs in under 5 minutes and takes up no more space than a coffee vending machine.
