I'm wondering how much(if any) time you're going to put into optimizing Quake 3 for G4/AltiVec. You said earlier that AltiVec wouldn't give much of a speedup, but other Mac developers have said it would.

There's even a little mini-game where reflective balls float around. It runs for 1000 frames and then gives you the avg FPS. Supposedly the G4 version is much(maybe 2x) faster.

Would it not be possible to optimize the G4 that much since you want to really have only one code base?

    Thanks.

Shoulda hit "preview" the first time.

Please God, get IBM to come onboard. The people at Motorola couldn't get up clock speed to save their lives. IBM is talking 500-700MHz G3s. If they start making G4s using SOI and using their amazing talent, Apple won't get screwed.

Steve Jobs should be on his knees begging IBM to make G4s. Motorola has made it abundantly clear that they can't meet deadlines, can't produce enough chips to meet even Apple's small demand, and can't keep up with Intel(much less AMD) in terms of clock speed and processing power

C'mon IBM, you can do it!

The sad thing about OS X is that Apple has finally also got the MacOS to a useable state w/ 8.5/8.6/9.0

Back at 7.5.3 it crashed many, many times a day. Now, it can stay up for days at a time(mine does). OS X is actually less necessary now that Apple finally fixed MacOS.

But I'm still looking forward to it. And there are a lot of people who wouldn't consider getting a Mac until it's out, so Apple should get it out ASAP.
