So you're saying that now we can replace that one Unix box that never crashes with 8 NT boxes that never crash at the same time. Sounds like a deal to me!;)
Why do most people think that the idea of a "superior" species using humans as raw material is horrific, but this kind of thing is alright? If you look at movies like Independence Day and The Matrix, the sole justification provided for destroying the "enemy" is that they are behaving almost exactly as these scientists are behaving toward the lab mice. I'm not an animal rights nut, but it seems like we've crossed some very important ethical boundaries when right and wrong are relative to whether we are the exploiter or the exploitee. It's a shame that throw-away sci-fi movies can seemingly grasp how terrible this kind of thing is but some of the best minds in the world either don't care or don't bother to consider it. This is _way _ beyond the usual animal cosmetic testing stuff.
If the storylines of those movies ever came true, I think we would probably be getting what we deserve. Karma can be a dangerous thing.

Geez, I can barely remember where everything is now. cd/usr/local/bin is a whole lot easier than cd/right/right/left/right/left/right/right/right.
I'm sure that a lot of people already know this, but for those who don't....

The Berlin Consortium appears to have similar goals( altho it's a little hard to tell from the somewhat vague PR by Objective Reality ) w/ the advantage of being GPLed. Berlin has the disadvantage of being rather in young in devel. terms tho.
I've not read Metcalfe before( and won't ever again if this article is indicative of his writing ) but it seems pretty obvious that this is a man who feels threatened by Linux and a software model that he just doesn't understand. This article is completely barren of any organized argument and is simply a knee-jerk bile dump. Let it go folks. Don't fill his Inbox with flames or even mail intended to gently "inform" him about Linux. He is either beyond help or hoping to produce an email/. effect which will provide him with more troll material.
Hmm...everytime I read about bio-computers it reminds me what Ken Thompson said about going into biology instead or CS. Why do I get the feeling that all of my experience with "traditional" computers is going to be worthless in about 15 years. Kinda like what happened to some of my older physics and EE profs when transistors came along and made their tube knowledge obsolete.

At least on/., the GNOME/KDE flamewars finally cool off and then Miguel has to go and say stupid something like this!:(
KDE and GNOME are both very nice( I use pieces from both ) and there is no need for either team to make inflammatory statements like this. Let the kiddies fight this psuedo-debate out in the middle school lunch room. GNOME rocks! KDE rocks! But having a choice rocks even more!
Sure RMS probably doesn't like it, but "MS is a symptom of a larger problem." Or roughly thereabout. He probably wouldn't like it if the building was named after Ellison or Jobs either.

Thank you. Now quit crying and start coding.

now the PR people who were working on the Usenet astroturf campaign can go ahead and admit
they're contracting with MS.?.

They want to use hydrogen from water as fuel. ;)
Cool...maybe we can use up some of the
runoff from the melting polar ice caps.
I'd wear a T with that big bug head. :D
The Kentucky theatre here in Lexington serves beer( I think from the tap too! ). Does that mean that Lex. is sorta like Amsterdam? ;) Yuh...I wish.
