Isn't that just a little bit american centric? Not everywhere in the world uses the same codes for "free phone" numbers. For example, in the UK we have 0800 and 0500, if I remember correctly. And thats just one example.

If Visual Python is addressing interlopibility (sic?) and a so called "scriptability issue" with X apps, what measures are beeing taken to ensure that VP does not expose *nix to some of the same problems that plauge Windows.

Of course, I understand that users "dont get root" but their home directories can be messed with, and if apps can be scripted then viri can be propergated.

I know this is slightly off-topic, but in a forum read by many inexperianced programmers (as well as experianced) it might be a good idea to point out that if ((x % 2) == 0) is a slow way of checking for an odd/even condition, as it does a multiply and checks the remainder. While there may be some obscure platform where the following doesn't work (could anyone name one?) if is much faster to use a binary AND, thus: if ((x&1) == 0) to check for an odd / even condition.

PS - I agree with the post on typesafty. :)

Much of a broadswords power comes from its weight, with the strike being assited by gravity.

The reason to get married is that if you have children, you don't get "stuck" with having to pay the expense alone. It's a way of putting the other person into a contractual situation where they'll have to be around.

People often portray marrage as an expression of love, it seems to me more like a fear of abandonment.

So what are we saying. Men only get married to get some snatch and women get married so that their chosen mate can't escape. Romance *is* dead.

  20. some thoughts on the article on When Volunteer And Commercial Developers Don't Mesh · · Score: 1
Here are, for those that are interested, my considered comments on some of the issues raised by the article.

While "QA Linux" may have gone about their constructive critisism in an a a more constructive fasion, rather than posting gobs of bug reports, it is tempting for the KDE team to then ignore them, this would be a missed opertunity to glean knowledge from a respected source.

Another thought I had was that while not all the suggestions are good for your average KDE user, it is probably worth considering how to make these ideas more feasable to implement as part of the packaging of KDE, that is, configurability.

    In the article Dennis asked:

But what if, having reported these hundreds of "bugs," Corel's developers set about "fixing" them and closing the bug reports?
If a developer is "misbehaving" then they can have their CVS rights revoked, can't they? It is in Corel's best interests to do things the KDE way. The alternative is to branch, and I don't think that would help anyone.

To be honest, it sounds like a lot of a fuss about very little. At the end of the day, its open source, and if it goes in a direction that any given group doesn't like, they can split off, but its in everybodys interests to keep things amicable, so the chances are, they will.

As any good biologist will tell you, it is the cost of a sexual display that makes it attractive. What you say when you buy Nike, Gucci, Prada and the rest is "Look at me! I can afford expensive clothing! I have so much money I can throw it away!"

This is the same as the peacocks tail, and is the product of sexual selection. The thoery goes, a male with a big tail must be tougher than an apparently equal male with a smaller tail, because life is more difficalt if you have a large tail, therfore to have survived with this handicap you must be a healthy mate.

Now look around you. Do cheap brands make such a big deal of their logos? No. That because they don't carry the prestege of the expensive brands. The (sub conciose) thinking behing it is "Damnit, if I'm paying Prada prices, I want people to know it."

Ironicly the proliferation of a brand reduces its value. Campri Ski anyone? (Or was that a UK thing?)
