Who says you have to wear a shirt? If they don't like it, they'll stop insisting on Video. :-)

If they do like it, well, I'll let you take it from there.

  5. Re:International Apple users take note on Apple Introduces iTunes Music Store, iTunes 4, new iPod · · Score: 1

Actually to paraphrase Steve's words he said "it is only U.S. for now.". To me that implies they are working it out for international customers. I imagine the problem has to do with Apple's contracts with the record companies, since there is no technical reason for this. So it's not entirely in Apple's power to make it happen.

    > The days of "good albums" would be gone

Um, in case you hadn't noticed, the days of good albums have been gone for awhile.

Seriously though, if you still like the whole album, you can get the whole album. In fact this music store will sell you the whole album for $9.99. Even after buying a CD-R to burn it into, that's cheaper than going to the store. And the site let's you preview the songs, so you still ahve the chance to experience more than just what comes up on the radio.

And the people that want the original disc, with all the extras and stuff can still go out and buy it.

Plus, if an artist that only has one good song out of 12-15, then frankly I couldn't care less if they don't make the money they want. You don't deserve to be rich if you can only come up with one or two good songs!

I'm betting there will be plenty of room for both Chimera (or whatever) and Safari. Safari is one of those apps that Steve Jobs said he wanted. As such its interface will likely be subject to and limited by what he wants. As an open source project Chimera will have much more freedom for customizations and more unusual features. Whether that is a good or bad thing is subject to interpretation, but I think it definitely means Chimera won't be a "mee too" product.

  11. Re:Computers Teaching UI to Humans = Bad on Palm Kills Off Graffiti · · Score: 1

While I understand where you are coming from, I just wanted to point out another example of users having to train themselves to adapt to a computer interface: the keyboard. There is nothing natural or intuitive about a keyboard. While it grew from the age of typewriters, hardly anyone learns to type on a typewriter now. And learning to type well has a steeper learning curve than learning something like Graffiti. Yet the keyboard is still widely considered the most effective means of inputting textual information into the computer.

But then again, what is natural about "natural" handwriting? We just all spent years in school learning to do that well, whereas training people to type is still not as universal.

So while my computer science education agrees with your statement in theory, I think that Graffiti is not brain-damaged and has merit, both from an engineering compromise standpoint and an efficiency of text entry standpoint (single strokes for each character).

  12. Re:My takes on All-New PowerBooks, Web Browser Featured at Macworld · · Score: 1

I totally love the 12 inch Powerbook. A year and a half ago I was really torn between the small size of the iBook and the greater power of the Powerbook. I ended up going with the Powerbook since it was my sole computer and I wanted the G4 processor. But if I were to buy again today I would grab the 12 inch.
It's the 17 inch that I wonder who is going to shell out the bucks for. As tight as it is it's on the edge of not-so-portable.

Most logos I have seen are translucent and I don't even notice them anymore. And it really helps when you are out of town at a hotel or flipping chanels at someone's house. For example, it's nice to know which station it is if you are trying to locate the channel for a particular show coming on later.

OTOH, I have seen a couple really obnoxious, in the way, not-so-transparent logos.

  14. OS gave me so much, I desire to give back. on Open Source - Why Do We Do It? · · Score: 1

My motivation for writing Open Source is to give back to the community that gave to me.

    1) I am motivated to write a program because of a need I have (the old "I have an itch to scratch" adage)
    2) I want to share it because I have benefitted so much from Open Source software.

So much of what I know came from exploring Linux and Apache. This knowledge has helped as much as my college education in getting the job I have today. Without the chance to "play" with all that free software as a college student, I really don't think I would be where I am now.

Did you even read the response from 2600 linked to in this Slashdot article? Even *IF* DeCSS violates the DMCA, in addition to arguing for the unconstitutionality of the DMCA, 2600 is arguing that linking to DeCSS is not illegal. The relevant quote (part A, question 11):
Even supposing, arguendo, that DeCSS is speech not covered by the First Amendment, this injunction should be affirmed only if, to take an example suggested by the Court at oral argument, it would be constitutional to enjoin a newspaper from giving the address of a bookstore where allegedly obscene books may be found in the course of reporting on an ongoing debate about adult booksellers. The comparison, even when the subject is not protected speech, shows how far beyond the boundaries of accepted First Amendment doctrine the District Court strayed here.
2600 is arguing here that they committed no crime against the DMCA. If you were charged with a crime and you think you are innocent, wouldn't you defend yourself?
