No console's first year is fantastic, but the Wii should be held to a higher standard because...? And you're right, you havent paid a lot of attention lately.
Strange, everyone I know who has a Wii, including myself, has a library of over ten games for it and plays it all the time, while their PS3's collect dust. Could it be, Liquidrage, that since you dont actually have a Wii that you have to idea what you're fucking talking about?
So you know so much about the Wii because you talked to some people you work with?
It's funny that you say it doesnt accomodate the serious gamer. Serious gamers want to play games that are fun. A serious gamer doesnt want to play the same FPS over and over again that he's been playing since 1993.
Actually the Wii controller is extremely accurate, you'd know if you'd ever played a Wii game. There's no more shovelware for the Wii than there is for any other MEGA-POPULAR system. The most popular system always gets the most shovelware, and the most good games as well.
And the graphics absolutely are better than that of the Gamecube, see Super Mario Galaxy for proof.
Then again, why waste time with a troll such as you? It's not like the Wii needs defending. It's just that I expect more from posts on Slashdot than drivel like yours.
That's funny, I have a 42" Panasonic Plasma and Metroid Prime looks fantastic on it. You need to look through your Wii's settings to make sure it knows you have an HDTV.
However, something tells me you dont actually have a Wii.
I just bought the "diskbox" from Radiohead. They deserve it for giving the RIAA a kick in the crotch. I've also purchased Aphex Twin and Mu-Ziq releases straight from their own labels which are not RIAA affiliated. I'll never buy a CD in the store again and I'll never purchase anything from any company associated with the RIAA. Sony is out of my life forever.
I play the Wii in front of a large Panasonic plasma TV every day. It looks gorgeous. There's no reason not to get component cables for the Wii, 480p is respectable if nothing else.
I enjoyed FF XII but I'm not going to spend what will likely be $660 to play XIII, especially since there will be versions released on every other console ever made (except the 360, apparently). I think Square lost sight of what makes FF a good game, for me it was never about the graphics. Final Fantasy XII will no doubt have beautiful graphics but the chances of it being a good FF experience are slim to none, probably due to too much energy being put into the graphics.
In the PS1 era I think people were shocked by how far graphics had come and Squaresoft used this intelligently at the time. Good graphics just arent that much of a shock anymore. I saw someone playing 360 the other day, a basketball game, and at first I thought he was WATCHING basketball on TV. Wow!! Then a minute later I saw the pixels, the seams, it wasnt as impressive as it had been at first glance. I got over the jump in graphics from the original xbox in less than 5 minutes. The improvement is there, definitely, but it's just not as big a deal as it used to be.
If the only people that bought the DS bought it for Brain Training then the DS would have only sold about 1-2 million units world-wide. There are games for the DS that give the PSP a run for it's money as far as graphics are concerned. The graphics arent terrible, the price is right and the selection of games is amazing - there really is something for everyone.
It's unbelievable that there is a perception that the DS is for people who "dont normally play video games". I play video games all the time and have since 1978. The DS fills that need for me. My PSP does not, the lack of quality and quantity of games looms large. For a system that has sold so many units the software sales on the PSP are very poor. I have a feeling it's because of early adopters like myself that just gave up on it, playing games on the PSP is a drag. I havent been able to find a decent game since Lumines. Even Katamari Damacy was a letdown. Most games I've tried since then just grate with the load times, when you're used to playing games on the DS the PSP's load times and controls just make it seem clunky. The PSP is better used for other things.
Not every game for the DS is simple either, have you tried Etrian Odessy yet?
I use my PSP to play MP3's and to check out a homebrew app once in a great while. It's very cool but only when you use it as Sony intends you NOT to. I dont expect or need the DS to do anything like that, although there is definitely homebrew for the DS. I'm too busy playing commercial games on the DS to do anything else. I've built up a library of nearly 30 games and there's plenty I still want but there's just TOO MUCH.
