  1. Notebook + battery on Building an Energy Efficient, Always-On PC? · · Score: 1

This has come up on /. before, interesting topic. I was very surprised to find I was spending around 100 bucks a year on just power for my pc. Similar to what was posted above.

If your looking to cut back yer power in a big way, you may wanna check your light bulbs first, cause generally, your going to be using more power there than in a typical pc. For your pc, using a notebook is a good idea. One bit of advice I got from the previous post on /., is to remember to use your fricking battery on the laptop!

Is there software built into any laptop, that allows you to switch between battery/outlet when either reaches low/high threshold? I have a couple years old hp pavi, which I believe doesn't have anything like that.

  2. Re:Blurry Lines on A Chinese Virtual Currency Challenges the Yuan · · Score: 1

Well, thats just the branch of the root. US currency is backed by federal securities; the fed and central banks buy or sell securities on open markets to influence their or other countries currency relative to their own.

Fyi also: For controlling internal inflation, the fed buys and sells treasury bills to banks of the fed, buy lowering or raising the fed funds rates, it allows banks to loan from the treasury, which is how they get their money. Federal backed securities are backed by federal income tax, which was instituted in 1933.

Now when China has a larger tax base for paying their securities out, then the yaun may become the new worldwide currency. Which could affect our foreign policy initiates in the future with the threat of possible confrontation or less money to pay for securities for war.

  3. Re:This Expansion worries me on Guild Wars Expansion, Sequel Officially Announced · · Score: 1

I tried gw when it first came out. I liked some of the ideas the dev team had: more character setup options, instant top level pvp; balanced skills across archetypes; and point resets in town with no money cost. I'm sure their are others, those are the ones that come to mind.

Ultimately, I couldnt get into the game because:
    a) I was playing wow at the time, and the combat in gw felt really sluggish (I liked the wow fpsish feel)
    b) there was no z axis.. which annoyed me to no end, even though games with z-axis don't totally take advantage of it

I tried the nightfall xpac too, but still couldnt get into because of the sluggish combat feel. Comparatively it felt like eq'ish mmos vs a fps. Have they changed any combat mechanics since last year or so?

I am sure they have fairly open minds... These missions aren't like Star Trek tho; where the intent is to drive around the proverbial neighborhood while high and see what happens, the missions are narrowly defined, with limited funding. And, if your working under those presumptions and looking for a can you don't bring a screwdriver.

After seeing what bioware has done with mass effect, and the visual quality attained... , and the fact its in space.. if it was released on the pc as an mmo instead of on the xbox360, I think wow would be a goner. Alas, I think they are going with dragonage as their mmo, another fantasy showing.
