If you can beat the pirates on the first 3 points, people are generally a lot more willing to pay, but still decide to download the game cause point 4 is so enticing.

Yes, everything was better back in the days. That's called nostalgia. It's not easy to find the real good indie games, especially if you don't know the scene. Two of my favorites: the DROD series: logic puzzles, haven't played a better puzzle game. Yes, i gave up on the game at the endboss.
The cut-scene is totally annoying, the boss ultra-hard and i think you can't go back to get some items for battle.
