  2. Re:Programming without music? on Music While Programming? · · Score: 1

It really depends on the person and their temperament, it has nothing to do with whether or not they were brought up in the city. I'm a country guy myself and I work much better with music than without. I can definitely work without, but I get more done and am in a better mood when I have music playing. High-energy stuff is best. I listen to primarily metal and DnB/Breakcore when working. Having music that you aren't distracted by is a must, however. Fast tempo music really helps keep your mind active, but it has to be music that either you aren't very interested in (ie, you wouldn't listen to it for the sake of listening to it), or music that you're familiar enough with that you aren't distracted by it.

I do find silence very relaxing and enjoy what of it I can get but, when working, the music helps keep me energetic and focused. It isn't a requirement though. Some days I'm just so damn busy that I forget to put it on.

  3. Get an old Palm on Good PDF Reader Device With Internet Browsing? · · Score: 1

Srsly, I have an old Palm Tungsten E (the first one, uses a standard mini-usb port before they did their universal dock connector shit). It's perfect for reading ebooks (Mobipocket Reader) and PDFs (Adobe has a Palm reader), and isn't bad for pictures as well (the screen is only 256 colours though). I use it an average of 2h per day (long commute, and I read paper books at home) and I only have to charge it maybe twice a week. The only thing it doesn't have on your list is internet. I personally don't care, I don't want internet on mine. If it is a big issue though, the Palm T|X, still sold new, has both wifi and bluetooth: http://www.palm.com/ca/products/handhelds/tx/ You may think of trying an SDIO Wireless card on the E or E2. It won't work at all on the E and I've heard very mixed things about using it on the E2, including impossible-to-find drivers and incredibly short battery life when using it.

I'm on shaw as well, in the vancouver metro area, and, while I have plently of complaints about other stuff, I have to admit I've never seen any throttling on my connection. I often max out both my upload and download (10/1, or ~1.2 MBps/~120 KBps), especially on private trackers, and I'm forced to actually cap my upload myself to around 80, or my connection craps it's pants when it comes to ping response. I have to say I'm pleased with shaw so far, which is a rare thing for me and a tech service company. But I'm keeping my eye on this and the second I see throttling, I'm going to send them emails, phone calls and letters, and when (not if) they say they won't stop, I'm going to start mailing gov't and anyone else who might be able to stop this. Net neutrality is one of the largest issues facing us recently. It could literally mean the death of the greatest tool of free speech in human history.

  7. Fox Trying to get revenge? on AC = Domestic Terrorists? · · Score: 1
Am I the only one who thinks that this report might be related to the Fox FTP incident less than a week ago? (http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/07/23/12 10255) The Fox account of the incident states "No user information, e-mail addresses or other personal data were ever comprised" (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,290633,00.htm l). However, according to the blogger linked in the above /. article:

"...later published on Slashdot exposed sensitive content to thousands of members of the public today. The data included names, phone numbers, and email addresses of at least 1.5 million people."
And to take a 3rd, independant source as confirmation, the register, a good british IT news/review site, has this to say (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/07/26/further_d ata_loss/):

"...the FTP account that was discovered provided access to records for around 1.5 million individuals, along with access to sensitive ZDNet business documents."
I say Fox has pointed the FUD-guns at Anonymous because of this incident. Let's get some free (liberal, as Fox would call it) media aware of this and point the truth guns right back at Fox.
