I might agree with you. Except I don't see any group of Israeli's using their civilians as human shields. I don't see any group of Israeli's running into cafe's with bombs strapped to themselves and blowing themselves up. I don't see anyone from the U.S.A., France, Germany, etc. doing such things. I see the United Kingdom taking steps to remove such a group of people from their own country. I don't see that happening in Lebanon. So yes, I'm extremely biased.
Maybe I'm one of those of those people who sit in their living room watching this conflict from afar. But just the same I have no sympathy for a civilian population that lets a group of people like Hezbolla act with impunity in their country. If we had a group of people lobbing missiles and destruction on Canada or Mexico there would be a HUGE uproar. If there were a group of people in our country striking across our border into Canada or Mexico and kidnapping a few soldiers while killing over twice as many to do so there would be a HUGE uproar. We wouldn't stand by and let it happen. There would be intense pressure on our government to do something -- and they would. These "innocent" people are complacent and so they are now paying the price for their complaceny. Its a bummer, no doubt, but just the same if they did something other than turn their heads they wouldn't be in this position. The fact of the matter is that the same people they were ignoring or some even rooting for are now using them as human shields. Mod me down, but I just don't buy into the "innocent victim" thing.
You live in a world where only about 100 years ago, give or take, horse and carriage was state of the art for personal travel, steam engine trains were revolutionary and now putting men on the moon and sending space probes that are still functioning to this day out of our solar system are 30 year old technology and you can sit there and say that city-sized spaceships or terraforming planets are fantastical ideas? Wow.
I'm more of the mind that the only reason those things could be far away is because no one has seen a way to profit from it yet.
I think we should if we can just because we can. I don't agree that its necessary to "solve things at home" first simply because there will ALWAYS be "one more problem to solve before we should do this." The long term benefits are HUGE beyond just the survival of our species. But the general view seems to only be interested in the short term returns which are nothing but a lot of spending. I don't really think its possible to solve "the human condition" and have a Star Trekian utopian society. There will always be the haves and the have-nots. There will always be wars somewhere as long as there is something to disagree about whether it be political boundries, religious beliefs, or someone needs something someone else has and they don't want to share. Its human nature and has been since the beginning of our species. There will always be "root causes" of problems at home that are truly unsolvable without turning the whole planet into one giant hive mind.
Despite all that, short of the whole planet getting blown up by the Death Star, somehow I think in the end some people SOMEWHERE will always survive even if the quality of life is not so nice. We are different than, say, the dinosaurs in that we can think, adjust, plan, and change the world around us. As far as we can tell we are the first and only species of life that can do those things and that makes us pretty adaptable.
This is all well and good but the fact that they have been doing this for a long time neither makes it right nor does it mean it works. It certainly didn't seem to help them find the terrorists on 9/11. If it took 30 years for this to become a public enough issue that people are up in arms then, in my opinion, it was 30 years too long. But I'm glad to see people are starting to notice all the little infringements on our rights and to realize that you don't need very many little ones to end up with big ones.
As regarding your second paragraph, everyone I've heard who have made statements like that seem to assume that the people who have access and control over all this collected information are robotic superheroes fighting for truth, justice, and the American Way, who would never ever ever ever ever mistakenly or purposefully use and/or abuse that information. Unless you haven't been keeping up on current events lately, there are all kinds of fraud, bribery, outing of secret agents, and other exciting criminal behavior going on with all of our government officials across all party lines. I'd have to say you like to live on the edge if you trust these people to do the right thing with your information.
Personally I don't understand why anyone would even consider touching this before its been out for at least a few months if not a year. It's quite apparent they are trying to rush this thing out the door. I'll be highly surprised if it isn't one huge bug infested mess. I certainly wouldn't want to depend on it for anything.
I think its more the case that they are jumping on this as "further evidence of Intel's monopolistic practices" as opposed to being afraid of the marketing. If you're bringing out the guns and plunking bazillions of dollars on lawyers you will jump on any scrap of information that you can use as evidence no matter how small.
If they aren't LEGAL to be here then making it legal for them to drive here is not the answer. I mean if we're going to make it legal for them to drive, I guess we should go ahead and make it legal for them to work here. I mean why have any illegal aliens at all? We can just make them ALL legal. Gee.. THATS a good idea! I don't think so.
I wonder the same thing. I worked for a.com during the spending sprees and they had a big plasma screen TV running MSNBC all the time. After a few months you could see the MSNBC stock ticker thingy at the bottom of the screen whether it was there or not.
I'd be really upset if my 4 or 5 digit price tag television had the sci-fi channel logo permanently etched in the lower right hand corner! What about channels like TNN that use the bottom part of the screen for advertising? Can you sue these people for damages?
IANAL, but its my understanding that in any work for hire the resulting product's copyright is owned by the person or entity that paid for its development unless explicitly written otherwise as in section (b) here.
I hope you aren't charging other parties for code you produced under contract for someone else or you're going to be poor soon.

Ok.. this guy is totally an overlooked genius. "A Toyotas a toyota."
:)
I love it!

Amen to that.

Thats almost exactly what Jon Stokes thought over at Ars Technica in this article http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060602-6977 .html

This is the same state that thought it would be a good idea to
give illegal aliens drivers licenses.
