  1. Re:I'm not convinced that there was magic... on Four Companies Get Half Your Clicks · · Score: 1

One problem I see is that today there is a too low signal-noise ratio in the web. Five years ago, if you went to 10 random sites, you would almost certainly find something interesting to see.

Today, there's simply too much noise. I also used to stay hours surfing at random on the web. These days I just read Freshmeat and Slashdot, and follow some links in the articles or posted by readers; if I try to search for something, chances are I'll end up with some site wich adds nothing new.

I think you're right, much of this is also because people stopped linking pages. The web is split apart in huge useless portals, and the good small pages are lost in the middle. Perhaps we should call it World Wide Ocean[1], because it seems that it's just that: a place with big continents and small islands, all unconnected.

[1] even better: Panthalassa, the one ocean that surrounded Pangea.

    Not true. Picture this.

    1. Suppose you have a red hat, and you're the last to guess. The first person to guess is wearing a blue hat, and the second a red one.
    2. You three know that if the two hats you can see are of the same color, chances are that your hat is of a different color. This will happen more than 50% of the time.
    3. If the first person to guess sees your red hat, and the other person's red hat, he may well guess that his hat is blue, based on (2). The second person will see your red hat, and the blue hat, and based on (2) he'll say his hat is red. And so will you.

Of course, this is an specific example where the first to guess must have a hat of different color from the other two. And, everyone must be aware of (2). But in this specific example, it's better to give the answers in sequence.
