In the case of a network setting, how many steps does it take to change the primary DNS address in Windows versus OS X? How many steps to find hardware information? Or, how about my favorite, uninstalling software.
Windows: 1 - Start 2 - Control Panel 3 - Add/Remove Software 4 - Select Program 5 - Click "Uninstall" [6 - Keep click "Next" in uninstall wizard, if required]
Mac: 1 - Open HD 2 - Click "Applications" 3 - Select Program 4 - Command+Delete
I completely agree. I once worked at a software retailer, and as anyone who has worked at such a place can tell you, people call you like you are a tech support line. I had this woman call up freakin' out because her computer hung and she had to hard restart it and got the "Your computer was improperly shut down" message along with scan disk. She thought her hard drive was erased or dead.
People just don't understand the warnings that they get from thier computers. If the dialog comes up an says that "this program is not signed by Microsoft" they will probably pack everything back up and try the take the software back to the store.
It is called being a Graduate Student. You get paid pretty crappy, but you do get paid.
I am a student at a university, I am also a paid employee of the university. I am sure that anything I create on their time, or for a class could be considered university property.
ON THE OTHER HAND.... None of this hols true for a school. It's not their time, (you're actually paying to be there in most cases). Also it is with your own equipment..(most of the time).
It is their time, if you are a graduate student. Grad students are paid by the university, so you are, in a sense, working for them.
This is exactly what happened when the first Playstation launched. It had crappy titles and they came no where close to using the power of the system. That was until the N64 came out, then Sony went advertizing crazy, and here we are today.
Saturn had good hardware and some really great games, but it had no developer support.
No support = dead system
Sony on the other hand has all kinds of support, so just because the launch titles suck (with the possable exception of Tekken Tag) does not spell disaster for the system.
Like I have said many times in the past: I have no problem, what so ever, paying for music, if the artist is actually going to get a cut. This might also be cheaper than going out and buying a full CD. My only question is: will there be a preview sample of the songs, maybe a streaming version, so that we can hear before we buy?
This could also help out the indie artists, now they might be able to make some money and move out of their parent's basements. (Tounge-in-cheek, for those with out a sense of humor)
I think that you missed the point. The point was that this treaty would have to be ratified by the Congress. Yes, it would be treated as a law should we pass it, but as with many treaties of the past, just because the US had a hand in creating it doesn't mean that we will sign it.

While I freely admit that Suck has gone downhill pretty fraggin' fast, the Onion still rocks!! I can't through the week without the huge dose of spite that the Onion provides.
You could just buy your own computer. That's what I did when I lived at home. Can't get a top of the line rig, but you can get some parts and throw something together. Tiger and Egghead tend to have pretty good prices/cheap shipping.
As a professional web developer you should be developing to standards.
Unfortunately, even when you develop to the standards - the site is still borken for 60% of your (potential) users.
While I'm not suggesting you have to specifically target IE6, you damn well have to make sure the site works in it.
I'd have to say the exact opposite.

Bullshit. I was a grad student for 7 years and never got one cent from the university.
Calm down. I ammend my statment: Most grad students get paid, they don't get paid well but they do get paid.

Well if the museum doesn't want it, we can always give it to our public schools. They are in need of an upgrade.

The more stupid it gets, the more people are going to panic. The people who are going to panic the most are the people who need to panic the least.

As far as I am concerned, they can rate games all they want to. As long as it is only rating, not telling me that I can and can't see.
