You still allow Apple to own education. That is not acceptable. Textbooks can still cost $16 with ePub and Adobe DRM, but then they will work on any notebook or tablet or netbook or eBook reader - even Apple. I would prefer no DRM, but I am realist enough to know the publishers would never go for that.
The epic fail is handing Apple control of education. It must not happen.
Sorry guys, what I was referring to is actually a function of Chrome. I just did a few experiments on different connections. If there is an existing redirection to a dodgy site Google DNS will send you there just like the rest. If the typo is an unrecognised address Chrome will suggest the nearest spelling which is generally what you meant.
eg if you type in www.tuxradar.com.au you will get "Did you mean: www.tuxradar.com" and it is nothing to do with the DNS.
I take it back, it does not do this any more. I just tried deliberate errors and go redirected to dodgy sites just like any ISP.
I must check that my router has not gone back to auto.
Still works better than Optus DNS.
It is not marketing, it simply pops up what it thinks you mean and gives you the option of clicking on the link without re-typing. Most ISPs give you search results which are annoying. Plus it give warnings about what Google classifies as dangerous sites. Combine with WOT and the total is pretty good.
Use it or don't use it, it is free.
Google even provide online instructions. Works faster than Optus DNS as well, plus meaningful "did you mean?" errors if you make a typo.
Not just to do with bypassing filters, it just works better.
Do not bother with Google conspiracy replies, just put on your foil hat.
The Limited part of the name was because it is a limited liability company. However these days it seems to mean the the news itself is Limited to what they want to tell you, for whatever is their purpose of the moment.
I do not understand how they stay in business.
Or just get everyone to install Web of Trust where the content is supplied by the user not some ISP or secret government agency.
Kiddies, if it is red do not go there.
The balance of power in our Senate is held by independents and the Greens, but mostly by an ultra consertvative called Senator Fielding who represents the christian orthodoxy. To pass legislation the government must get the Greens and Fielding on side to out vote the opposition Liberal Party who are not liberals but conservatives.
Thus the government is always having to suck up to Fielding.
After the next election, later this year, it is unlikely that Fielding will have that power any more, even if he is re-elected. The current polls would have the Greens with enough senate seats to control the balance of power in the upper house irrespective of which major party wins the general election. When they have to suck up to the Greens, rather than the Christian right wing it will be very interesting to see how policy changes, even if we have a conservative government (still not likely, but you never know).
I use Gmail exclusively on 4 different Ubuntu based Linux boxes and notebooks and Gmail, Google Docs and all other things Google all work as expected in Chromium. I use the Chromium daily builds via the Ubuntu PPAs.
I have also used Chrome Beta under Debian SID and gmail worked flawlessly.
I would rename your "/home/yourname/.config/Googel Chrome" or "/home/yourname/.config/Chromium" to savedchrome or whatever, then start a clean Chrome and try again.
Resynthesizer is awesome. The article is using it incorrectly. Removing the man and the car is removing half the picture. He is trying too hard in all the examples. Use it on poles and small objects and it is magic. It also takes time to work with it's idiosyncrasies, for example with wildly varying backgrounds it is better to do a removal in smaller pieces.
And it is FREE.
Ten thousand scientists in two dozen countries, democratic, communist, totalitarian, capitalist, socialist all working together in concert to trick the world for personal or political gain.
If you believe that, then there is no hope for you or anyone else who truly thinks that this conspiracy theory has any credence.
War is not necessary. Geo-engineering will be necessary because no world wide agreement on carbon reductions will ever be reached. The G8 countries will eventually take their own action and ignore the minnows. When 5 trillion dollars worth of artificial trees are deployed there will not be a vote at the UN to approve it.
Copenhagen showed the individual governments of the world will never get past self interest to agree on a common approach. It is pointless having a system where a Pacific or Indian Ocean country can scuttle a brokered deal by voting no. In the end the G8 will have to make an agreement and then enforce it on the rest of the world. So in a sense Lovelock is correct, just at the wrong level of government.
To whoever marked my post off topic
Suggesting a USB turntable is not off topic, and a dozen others have suggested the same thing. The final line of his post reads "or are there better thinking-outside-the-box alternatives available?" Yes there are and one is a USB Turntable, and as he is clearly an Australian so I also pointed him to where he can get one easily.
From one Australian to another.
Aldi Supermarkets have a USB Turntable on special this week for $A79 - no line in required - complete with Windows software for recording. Simple, neat and good enough for making mp3s from your old vinyl.
Cassettes are a different story, but I am sure there are plenty of options in that area too.
I wholeheartedly agree with the point, it is absolutely true. Only a small percentage will try to break free. I am happy to use Linux on all of my machines, but also realize that Linux usage will probably never go past 5-10% simply because it does take effort to re-learn and you have to value true computer freedom to even want to make that effort. I just wish more people could experience the freedom of using a computer without using antivirus and all the other band aids required to just keep the system functional. Not to mention the utter waste of money involved. But I know most will never step outside of what they know, and fear being seen as deviant.
cheers
The problem with eating Big Macs and Whoppers is that you become a Big Whopper yourself. Bland and full of bloat and handcuffed to the medical industry. It takes an effort to be a lean machine, the path you take is your own choice.
Written by someone who has never used GNU/Linux. For everyday usage you do not have to figure out what version you are using or care about dependencies or ever hand edit config files. You open the package manager, find the app you want and click "install" and a few seconds later it is installed and ready because the app comes from a distro specific repository. Ubuntu/Debian has 30000 plus packages. You do not use the Windows approach of searching the web for an app, downloading and installing. The apps are already in the distro repository, verified and waiting. Another reason Windows users get viruses, because you never know who packaged the program until it is too late. Linux programs from the repository are verified clean and legit.
You also imply that Windows users never have a problem installing software or finding drivers. Who are you trying to kid?
I would say that you have drunk the kool-aid already. You are quoting the Daily Mail as your source, not NASA or a national weather service. Eliminating data that is erroneous is absolutely required for accuracy. Here in Australia it was found that historical temperature data from one station was from a thermometer nailed to a post under a corrugated iron roof in the car park of a pub. Yet the scientists are criticised for eliminating these readings. They would be soundly criticised by their peers if they did not eliminate this data. The data has to be tested to be reliable and valid, and a lot of data does not meet this quality standard. It is not massaging the data, it is only relying on verified data for analysis. It is not a conspiracy it is science.

Great, too bad if you are poor, no more textbooks for you. No iPad no education. There is no merit in this kind of lock in.

Have you not seen the PPA repositories?

Perhaps my taking the piss out of conspiracy theorists was too subtle. Next time I will have to be more blunt.

What about all the machine bought with Windows that gets wiped and Ubuntu installed. Microsoft still counts them.

The G8 is USA, GB, France, Russia etc. Enforce it with military and economic might.

You are basing your opinion on nothing but rumours and newspaper articles by conspiracy nuts and the opinions of paid political bloggers.
