yep, and comparing the base operating system performance (which would be what? isn't the operating system supposed to run applications?) between windows and *nix is most definitely not apples to oranges. nosirree...
all those statistics prove is that more than half of the/. users who respond are wannabes who pay *nix lip service, but always find a convenient excuse to not use it in daily use. "i must have flash 5 support", they cry, or "i hate not being able to watch MS's proprietary video streams."
windows is the left-hand path. you can justify your choice any way you wish, but just be aware what you're supporting the next time you open your mouth and gripe about how proprietary the web has become...
i think that 'links' might be a little better than lynx, insomuch as one can view frames, rather than having to guess at which frame you need, and then selecting it. just a thought. great idea using the web browser though. totally great idea...

yeah, duh. i thought about that after i posted my amazing witticism. guess i need to smoke a little more crack before i post:/
someone explain to me why ntfs, which is a journalled filesystem, takes so long to run chkdsk after an 'abnormal' (well, normal for NT) system halt? it should be able to just replay the log to restore the drive's metadata to a consistent state. Instead, it takes as long or longer than chkdsk on a FAT filesystem.
also interesting how little details, like the fact that MFT continues to grow, and can't be defragmented and lost filespace recovered, are left out. NTFS sucks. get a real filesystem.
i remember working with lame old system/3x machines that had dedicated controllers (which were coprocessors) for I/O of all sorts. Seemed to do ok - you're right, in that it would be really interesting to see how more modern hardware would perform under these same conditions, with an OS or services layer that took advantage of smart I/O devices...
your g4 gets hot compared to what? i have a PB G4 and the fan only runs when i'm playing Q3Arena. Even then, it runs and switches off. there's no peecee laptop made using a p2/p!!! that could run without a cpu fan.

scsi is arbitrated and parallel, so no matter how many devices you have on it, no more than one at a time can communicate over the bus. Ultra 160 helps this how?
actually, i think they're just designed to screw with the guidance systems and let them all fall into canada - i mean, it's not like anything worthwhile would be destroyed, would it?
wts/citrix sucks for anything other than simple setups - the co. i work for is moving all the lusers to thin clients (hahaha, you know, purchasing thin clients (and then e-pc's cuz the thin clients couldn't be used with a floppy or cd if necessary) instead of using the old crap computers that they had as thin clients), and there are so many issues with lack of true multi-user functionality. all kinds of problems with drive mapping, and assumptions made by software, etc. that it's all running on a machine with one user at a time.
told you that mcse wouldn't be worth shit, but did you listen? no.....

i'm trying to see how my beliefs in Kali the Eternal Mother and Shiva the Destroyer fits in with your holy ghost. sorry, not seeing it.
gotta love the big-pupil look.

oh, yeah, cuz NT sucks donkey dicks on commodity hardware.

then he couldn't complain about the vile constraints of using an Apple OS.

maybe he's talking about the networks that the apes use in Planet of the Apes?
the G4 mac you use in the computer lab doesn't count as the University's supercomputer...
my one friend works as a contract SGI admin for US Customs - he's salaried, but gets paid OT if he works it. wierd.
i didn't see anything in the original post that mentioned NT administrator anywhere :)
c'mon, this is slashdot - everyone here thinks the world runs on intel.
yeah, at my company, the lying, illiterate mouth-breathing wastes of air are promoted to management, particularly in IS.

chown us:us *your_base
maybe he's compiling on windoze and needs to cold start the machine after every bsod.
and i don't think that's likely, since it's already started to be a problem with gnutella and the mpaa...
yeah, d00de! win2K rulez!! It's a perfect OS for the P4 - check it out here
