  1. Re:No music in Quake 1 or 2 on Steam. on The Aftermath of QuakeCon · · Score: 1

I agree-- the sound effects and haunting music in Quake 1 were top notch and really created a dark, creepy atmosphere. Playing the game without Reznor's music ruins the atmosphere.

  2. Carmack's other announcements... on The Aftermath of QuakeCon · · Score: 3, Informative

Carmack also said yesterday in an interview with Game Informer that "there will be a Doom 4" at some point and "there's going to be a Quake Arena sequel." The Quake Arena sequel will be built with the id Tech 5 engine. Also, Carmack stated that id Tech 5 will probably not be changed to Direct3D 10 for the PC version of Rage (the engine uses OpenGL). http://gameinformer.com/News/Story/200708/N07.0803 .1731.12214.htm?Page=1

  3. Focus on online play on The State of Korean PC Gaming · · Score: 2, Interesting

My roommate is from Korea and he plays StarCraft for many hours every day. How strange it was, then, when I learned that he had never played the single-player campaign at all! Basically, most people in Korea never play single-player video or computer games. They only play games like StarCraft, Lineage II, or Sudden Attack online with their friends. I asked him if he had ever heard of popular games such as Halo, Gears of War, Civilization, Counter-Strike, etc. but he has never heard of any of them. I think StarCraft, Lineage II, and Sudden Attack are the only games he has ever played, but he plays them for at least several hours every day. Very different from the Western hardcore gamer, who typically owns 100's of games.

My apologies to Mr. Chiang-- he has posted a note saying that he was not the shooter. As he says on the same livejournal:

I am not the shooter. Through this experience, I have received numerous death threats, slanderous accusations, and my phone is out of charge from the barrage of calls. Local police have been notified of the situation.
  5. Possible Suspect? on Many Dead In Virginia Tech Shooting · · Score: -1, Flamebait

There are some rumors circulating on various forums (I found it on the GameSpot Off-Topic forum, strangely enough) that the guy who has posted on the above LiveJournal may be the shooter.

Look at the facts: this "Mr. Chiang" is Asian, a grad student in IT who apparently hates Virginia Tech and pretty much everyone else, he is obsessed with guns, he broke up with his girlfriend late last month... It could be a coincidence, but I guess we will find out soon enough.

  6. Re:Gaming on Many Dead In Virginia Tech Shooting · · Score: 2, Interesting

The shooter was apparently an Asian male in his 20's, and he was a student at Virginia Tech. I'd say the odds that he played CS and/or other first person shooter games are pretty damn good. Even if he didn't, you can bet that people like Jack Thomson and Hilary Clinton are going to be all over this.

Open source in this case means that the textures are part of a library that is available for anyone to legally use. 'Open source' doesn't always refer to source code.

  13. I went to Caltech and it sucked. on Getting in to a Top Tier College? · · Score: 1

I was accepted early action at Caltech, and since it was my first choice that's where I ended up going. After one term at Tech, I realized that it wasn't for me, so I transferred to my state university. At least three of my friends there also transferred after the first or second year. I think it's difficult to imagine how stressful and insane a place like Caltech is until you're actually there. It's small, about the size of my high school (~900 undergrads), and everyone there is brilliant. People there say they aren't competitive, but that's a lie. It's just that they aren't cutthroat like they apparently are at MIT. Students at Tech basically waste four years solving unreasonably difficult problem sets until 4:00 AM every night and getting mostly crap GPA's since there is way less grade inflation than at other schools (Ivy's). A lot of the prof's don't seem to give a damn about the undergrads and don't know how to teach. A few of them are alright, though. Another thing that bothered me was being around nerds 24/7-- it seems cool at first, but I got tired of it quickly. Oh yeah, and if you want to start a relationship in college? Forget about it at Caltech. There's not enough time, and even if there was, I didn't find any of the girls interesting. If you're a girl, well-- let me just tell you a saying the girls at Tech have-- "The odds are good, but the goods are odd." Another thing-- Caltech is in a great town, and the weather is nice and everything, but you'll hardly ever have time to see it. Most students seem to never leave campus because they are always so busy with work. When I was in high school, I thought college was all about academics and learning shit. After a few years in college, though, I realize that it's more about becoming a person who is well-adjusted and prepared to get along in the world. If you go to Caltech, I can almost guarantee that you will be the opposite of well-adjusted (unless you transfer :P So yeah, I would say give CMU a fair chance. I have a couple of friends who are very happy there, and it seems like an awesome school.
