  1. All this is is a fancy earpiece on Mobile Phone in Your Teeth! · · Score: 1
All this appears to be is a fancy earpiece. So, you could indeed use it to listen to a separate mobile phone, but before I implanted anything like this, I'd want to make sure it had a good security - lots of potential issues - to start with :
    • do you really wanted to be bombarded by adverts EVRYWHERE you go
    • whats to stop someone jamming or invisably replacing the signal
    • they say no-one else can listen in - not to the sound, but what about the radio signal ?
All things considered, a pretty sketchy story - not enough detail.

    | I doubt you actually think that.

Of course not, it's just hyperbole :-)

    | I'm not saying I like playing around with the
    | interface rather than playing the game. What I
    | like is the fact that in Diablo I/II I'm taking
    | a risk by equipping a long bow when enemies can
    | just rush me and beat the hell out of me while
    | I'm switching weapons. I think that risk makes
    | the game more fun.

Yeah, but would you ever really actually do that ?

The process of switching weapons is so labourious that you'd rarely do it - for example, if you're playing an archer, it would be impossible to pick off distant foes as they race towards you, and then switch to a melee weapon when they get too close.

The only time you'd switch is when you found a new weapon that you'd want to try, or if you know there's some nasties 'round the corner' that you want to take care of with a different weapon - a situation when you know you're going to be uninterrupted.

Having the ability to switch weapons without lots of time consuming teadious fiddly mouse stuff opens up more varied ways of playing - variety is good - it stops the game from getting tired so quickly.

Hmm, I don't know why this got +4 insightful :

    | But some of these changes seem like they'll
    | change the game for the worse

    | Also, the weapon switch hotkey thing. In terms
    | of realism, the old way didn't really take long
    | enough (you try unstrapping a shield from your
    | arm and drawing a longsword and see how long it
    | takes). Now you can switch instantly?

I think you misunderstand the point of a game. A game is designed to let the player have fun. Realism can be good, but not when it interfers with having fun. If you want realism, then what are you doing playing Diablo ? How many Demons did you killed on your way into work this morning ?

    | And while I love the fact that sockets/gems
    | will actually be useful, I don't like the fact
    | that I'll be told exactly what a gem will do
    | before I socket it. I pay enough attention to
    | numbers already.

OK, so don't read the info it gives you - just randomly plug in assorted items into the sockets, and if you get a crap item, then you can just throw it away, and spend a couple of weeks trying to find another one to try again. If that's your idea of fun then go for it!

Hmm, if devices 'are programmed to identify the signal transmitted by national broadcasters' then just think what fun you could have with a small radio transmitter and a bit of hacking. Drive around town transmitting codes from another country, and cause everyone electronics to self destruct. Now, better get shares in those electronic manufacturing and retail companies first... then as people rush out to replace their old stuff, sit back and rake in the money.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious here, but wouldn't there be a little issue with placing a full length railgun on a sub or ship ?

    I can see it now...

Captain! There's a killer sub closing on us, about to fire a torpedo!

Quick, fire the rail gun at it.

OK, give me 5 minutes to line us up on its pos...[BAM!!!, Game over]

"The point that you are missing is energy effeciency of the device used to get up to space. While the "absolute minimum" energy requried is a hard limit. The maximum energy used is not. Also, using rockets, you have to carry your launch fuel with you, which is heavy and spendy. Using a space elevator you only need to carry fuel that you need to manuever once you are in space. That is why a space elevator would be so much cheaper."

Also, wouldn't you be able to recover some of the energy cost when you bring the elevator back down (regenerative braking) ?

Also, how about the energy generation possibilities of a vary long cable moving through a magnetic field...

Why is this hypocracy ? Do you think everyone who reads slashdot shares everyone else's opinion about everything posted ?

    Get real.

If everyone on slashdot agreed with my opinions then there wouldn't be any point in reading the comments.

I think Napster is being used to rip off artists copyright, just as it looks like contentville might be doing something silmilar. Where's the hypocracy in that ?

If you disagree with what someone says about one topic then fine, then argue against it, but don't think everyone who reads slashdot thinks the same.

No, the HP3000's are PA-RISC based (except for the REALLY old ones)
systems that run HP's MPE OS. You're thinking of the 300 series
workstations, that pre-dated the motorola based 400 series workstations,
which in turn predated the pa-risc based 700 series workstations.

    HP3000's are still available today.

  9. RGB enzymes available - grow your own screen ? on Glow-in-the-dark Christmas Trees · · Score: 1
I see in the article that they talk about having enzymes glow blue and red, as well as the green.

This raises some interesting possibilities - a bit more genetic engineering (OK, a lot more) and in the future you might be able to grow you own wall sized computer screen using RGB enzyme triplets.

Only problem is that I'd probably kill it off by forgetting to water it...
