Because of Apple's stranglehold over the Mac look and Feel before OS X, this kind of customization wouldn't have been possible. Remember how all the Mac users used to gush over Apple's consistant "look and feel?" Now they'll be gushing over "how insanely customizable" their Macs are! Mac users, in general, are quick to spout the party line of Apple and the Mac press. Oh well! I'll be running OS X on my laptop soon.

But how many parents, business executives, educators, politicians or journalists recognize that so powerful and creative a force is now available to children? That future ideas about creativity, imagination, work -- and individual relationships to institutions -- will be shaped by such tools, just as they were by the PS2's more primitive predecessors, from the early Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) to game-playing computers? As pundits sound alarms about how videogames are ruining children's moral lives, as both major presidential candidates did repeateadly, during the campaign -- who in our culture is preparing for the radical changes in imagination about to be unleashed?

  13. Why I love Java and why I hate java on Why Linux Lovers Jilt Java · · Score: 3
I like Java because it lets me whip on sophisticated applications much faster than C/C++/Perl (Maybe not Perl...). The Sun supplied Java classes are pretty well writeen for the most part and allow rapid application development in a cross platform manner. These classes are Java's greatest assest since they all work on any Java platform. Java is a also a great teaching language. My introductory Java class (which is very easy for me) has people writing checkers apps.

    Why I Hate Java
    • Swing sucks. AWT sucks. GTK+ should have Java hooks (now that Sun is a GNOME backer.) I cannot get an App that doesn't look like ass.
    • Redundacy within stuff. Ex: Integer.parseInt
    • Slugishness. Java gets its ass kicked by C in speed.
    • Gluttony. Java gets its ass kicked by C in memory.
    • No (good/easy) way to hook C/C++ code into Java.
    • Browser JVM's are old ... except NS6/Mozilla. And BLOATED!!!!

wrong answer. These decrease your freedom as a programmer. The LGPL is superior for technologies like this. With the LGPL you don't have to use the GPL for your code. You can make it commercial, artistic or BSD. QT's licensing is just TroolTech's scam for making lots of bucks off of Linux programmer when they start making commercial apps.
