When was the last time you saw a story on/. about VMS that wasn't FUD? NEVER? CmdrTaco must have some unholy pact with AT&T / Bell Labs to market UNIX System V release 4. Does Bell Labs UNIX run on Digital's superior VAX architecture? NO! (But before I get flamed, UC Berkeley's "BSD" UNIX does) UNIX is a toy operating System!
Because of Apple's stranglehold over the Mac look and Feel before OS X, this kind of customization wouldn't have been possible. Remember how all the Mac users used to gush over Apple's consistant "look and feel?" Now they'll be gushing over "how insanely customizable" their Macs are! Mac users, in general, are quick to spout the party line of Apple and the Mac press. Oh well! I'll be running OS X on my laptop soon.
But how many parents, business executives, educators, politicians or journalists recognize that so powerful and creative a force is now available to children? That future ideas about creativity, imagination, work -- and individual relationships to institutions -- will be shaped by such tools, just as they were by the PS2's more primitive predecessors, from the early Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) to game-playing computers? As pundits sound alarms about how videogames are ruining children's moral lives, as both major presidential candidates did repeateadly, during the campaign -- who in our culture is preparing for the radical changes in imagination about to be unleashed?
I'm imaginging shooting my high school cafeteria up. And man, does it look good at 130M/polygons a second!
I like Java because it lets me whip on sophisticated applications much faster than C/C++/Perl (Maybe not Perl...). The Sun supplied Java classes are pretty well writeen for the most part and allow rapid application development in a cross platform manner. These classes are Java's greatest assest since they all work on any Java platform. Java is a also a great teaching language. My introductory Java class (which is very easy for me) has people writing checkers apps.
Why I Hate Java
Swing sucks. AWT sucks. GTK+ should have Java hooks (now that Sun is a GNOME backer.) I cannot get an App that doesn't look like ass.
Redundacy within stuff. Ex: Integer.parseInt
Slugishness. Java gets its ass kicked by C in speed.
Gluttony. Java gets its ass kicked by C in memory.
No (good/easy) way to hook C/C++ code into Java.
Browser JVM's are old... except NS6/Mozilla. And BLOATED!!!!
THis idea was tossed around on Advogato.org. Should be interesting to see. (On a side note, wouldn't it be cool if all these free software sites had soemthing like the microsoft wallet?)
I had problems with Java using the installer that downloads the components form the install (Debian 2.2 x86). So I just downloaded the full version under the./sea directory and java works fine.
wrong answer. These decrease your freedom as a programmer. The LGPL is superior for technologies like this. With the LGPL you don't have to use the GPL for your code. You can make it commercial, artistic or BSD. QT's licensing is just TroolTech's scam for making lots of bucks off of Linux programmer when they start making commercial apps.
I had heard that GTK (the widget set powering GNOME) was a little beefy to run on a PDA (due to CORBA). Personally, I don't think QT or GTK is really suitable for PDA's / Embedded Systems.... But who knows with Moore's law:)
This actually doesn't use X. Widgets like QT or GTK are not inherently linked to X. Its just that the Linux versiosn use X for the underlying layer. The win32 versions use win32 APIs.
What do you guys listen to right now?
Do you use Napster?
- Be sure to get it indexed on all the major search engines and directories
- Include a local search feature (even if it is only Google's site search feature)
- Include contact information
- Meta tags to enable easier finding of info.
- Accessability!
Don'tsAre they going to educate them about the Internet economy also?
ahem I ALREADY DID

agreed.
Personally I cannot STAND it! But I suppose that just goes to show that people like what they're used to.

Right..............
But they have Alpha channels.

Its called MY UNIVERSITY. They take a yearlly rate of US $30,000.
Here's the Filthy Critic's review. (GIVES AWAY PLOT)
Why I Hate Java
Will be another "Troll" from me about QT sucking. Well... maybe. It'd be nice to see GTK+ widgets in such a low-end system.... we'll see

I managed to get my karma down to like 30 in a day :)
Actually, for a single user workstation (esp. with limited drive space) I prefer one big filesystem. For a server this makes sense though.
When I was in Viet Nam, I inserted more than my "video card" into the Vietnamese. I even used SCSI
that was a troll BTW... didn't you notice the constipation in monkeys part?

KDE would be fine if it used GTK+. I object to QY.
