  1. Where's the beef... eerr... lead? on Old Computers Vs. The Environment · · Score: 1

Where is the lead? Inside of the tube wall? I think that estimate is way overblown.

I just took apart an old 17" IBM monitor and threw most of the guts away. I got some damn good aluminum and SOLID copper transistor heat sinks out of there, along with the LEDs, a transformer, big-ass capacitors, a male power recepticle, and some other stuff.

The PCB, plastic, metal case of aluminum and steel, various components including electrolytic and electrostatic capacitors, resistors, diodes, some transistors, and other things got tossed.

Why did I toss it? Becuase there is NOWHERE to recyle the crap. Nowhere -- I have looked. I talked to three manufacturing plants in Phoenix, the city of Scottsdale, City of Phoenix, and looked for stuff online and in the yellow pages and there is nothing. I would have to wait until the anual toxic cleanup campaign where you can bring hazardous materials in like batteries and liquds to throw it away -- too long for me. If people want to get serious about the environment, they need to get organized. That goes for me too. Maybe I should have made more of an effort.

We are at a technologicl point where we can do this. It is a question of if a producer is willing to do it because of cost issues of adding that feature to the product or looing out on the consumers possibly having to buy titles on all new media.

Look at the Playstation 2. Backwards compatibility is a HUGE feature and everyone knows it.

Hhmmm.... this leads me to think. If I own a movie on VHS, do I not own the rights to watch this movie on DVD, or any other medium? I would love an answer to this.

  12. It started when MS Office 2000 was released... on EBay Pulls MS Auctions, Neutralizes Complaints · · Score: 2

I remember when this all started. When Microsoft released Office 2000, they were ready to deal with eBay. Auctions started being canceled in the truck-loads.

Microsoft realized that people had been selling full versions of their software on eBay at significantly reduced prices. These are those full versions of Windows and Office that say "For distribution with a new PC only." In other words, not for resale. Why not for resale to the public? Because Microsoft does not want you finding out that companies like Dell, HP, Compaq, and even little system assembly companies get massive discounts when they buy Microsoft software in bulk. When I say massive, I speak of 50% or more off.

It is not just system assemblers that can get these discounts either. If you are a company and want to buy 100 copies of MS Office 2000, you can get full versions at those huge discounts. This is what people have been doing -- buying in bulk and then redistributing.

They stamp, "not for resale," and make huge profits off of you and me.

The end of it is that you either have to pay Microsoft an absurd price for their software in store, or buy a whole new PC. For those of us who assemble our own systems, this is not at all practical.

I personally bought both my copies of MS Windows 95 "B", and Windows 98 SE from eBay type sellers, as well as MS Office 2000 Pro. At the time I bought it, MS Office Professional cost something like $750 in stores for the full version. The "Not for resale." version cost me $200. I simply had to buy it off of eBay from someone's website.

Microsoft is keeping the market from setting the prices on their software.

And my Debian linux disks for Sparc and i386, they cost me about 50 cents for each CD, and a little while of download time. Working at a tier one ISP with multiple OC-48s has its advantages. Unfortunately, linux cannot replace my Windows system for its gaming, USB device, and specific application purposes.

Another camera which is very similar to the D460 is the Kodak DC240.

But, if you have the money, I hear that you should go for the Kodak DC290. It does not have the uncompressed image mode, the LCD viewer is not as nice, it is a little bigger, but it is overall superior.

  19. Vulnerable / Voicespam resolution on Spammers Hit Wireless Phones · · Score: 1
Our company is vulnerable to this kind of spam as well. All of our techs carry around issued eMail pagers and cell phones that have similar text capabilities. It would be fairly annoying if we were to be hit.

The good side is that if the souce was from our network or downstream, we could turndown their service.

    Off subject slightly;

Why voicespam has not been taken care of is for poor reasons. What the TelCos could do is offer a service where after you hang up, you can press a certain code into the phone. The last number dialing into your location will be tagged as an undesirable solicitation. After a certain number is hit within a system for a particular number, the TelCo can have the right to shut down service or monitor the line.

The TelCos will not do this, unfortunately. They make money from the phone calls. Last month I got a flyer from US West offering a new service for voicespam blocking.
